WELCOMING YOU IN THE SPIRIT OF ALOHA!

In the spirit of Jesus, all are welcome with Aloha*. We are blessed by the presence of all who worship here today.

We welcome all guests. St. Michael’s is an open, inclusive and diverse parish that desires to invite all into an experience of unity with God and communion with each other in Christ. We invite you to participate fully in the worship of God. Lift your voice in praise, respond to the prayers and readings, and come to the altar for communion or a blessing. Or, if you prefer, sit back quietly and allow God’s Spirit to speak to you in the way that feels most comfortable. Although there are customary postures in Episcopal worship (such as standing and kneeling) you are invited to be seated at any point, according to your needs and comfort.

All are welcome at God’s Table. While we worship in the Episcopal tradition, we are all guests at God’s table and all who yearn for the Holy in their lives are invited in share in communion. Crossing your arms at the altar rail indicates your desire to receive a blessing rather than communion. If you wish to have communion brought to you at your seat or if you desire a gluten-free wafer, please notify an usher or tell the priest distributing the bread.

Wherever you find yourself on the journey to holiness and oneness with each other and the One we call God, there is a place for you here. If you’re interested in learning more about the St. Michael’s community of faith talk to any of our members and visit our website at www.stmichaels-kauai.org.

*Aloha has many meanings: love, compassion, kindness, greeting, salutation, regards,

to name a few. One author summarized Aloha... “is the divine breath that gives all of us

a sense of humility, balance and grace”. May you be so blessed this day.

The Collect of the Day Presider The Lord be with you. Assembly And also with you. Presider Let us pray.

Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lessons Genesis 28:10-17

A Reading from the Book of Genesis Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!” And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Psalm 103: 1-14, Dottie Bekeart, Cantor

Bless the Lord, O my soul, * and all that is within me, bless his holy Name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, * and forget not all his benefits. He forgives all your sins * and heals all your infirmities; He redeems your life from the grave * and crowns you with mercy and loving-kindness; Antiphon. He satisfies you with good things, * and your youth is renewed like an eagle's. The Lord executes righteousness * and judgment for all who are oppressed. He made his ways known to Moses * and his works to the children of Israel. Antiphon. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, * slow to anger and of great kindness. He will not always accuse us, * nor will he keep his anger for ever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, * nor rewarded us according to our wickedness. For as the heavens are high above the earth, * so is his mercy great upon those who fear him. Antiphon. As far as the east is from the west, * so far has he removed our sins from us. As a father cares for his children, * so does the Lord care for those who fear him. For he himself knows whereof we are made; * he remembers that we are but dust. Antiphon.

A Reading from the Book of Revelations Revelation 12:7-12

War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

Reader The Word of the Lord.

Assembly Thanks be to God.

The Gospel John 1:47-51

Presider: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John Assembly Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Presider The Gospel of the Lord. Assembly Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Andrew McMullen

Musical Response Alan Van Zee The people stand as you are able.

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

Page 10: The Feast of St. Michael and All Angelsfiles.constantcontact.com/723fe85b401/f9dd3d04-b09...a sense of humility, balance and grace”. May you be so blessed this day. 3 The Holy Eucharist:

by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Form III The people may stand or kneel. The Leader and People pray responsively, the people’s

responses are highlighted in bold type. Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight.

Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence. The Presider adds a concluding collect.

Confession of Sin Presider: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence. All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving Prayer A

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Because in the obedience of your saints you have given us an example of righteousness, and in their eternal joy a glorious pledge of the hope of our calling. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Presider and People

The Sanctus Hymnal S129

Page 16: The Feast of St. Michael and All Angelsfiles.constantcontact.com/723fe85b401/f9dd3d04-b09...a sense of humility, balance and grace”. May you be so blessed this day. 3 The Holy Eucharist:

16

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Presider and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Presider continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Page 17: The Feast of St. Michael and All Angelsfiles.constantcontact.com/723fe85b401/f9dd3d04-b09...a sense of humility, balance and grace”. May you be so blessed this day. 3 The Holy Eucharist:

17

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread The Presider breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

Presider: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

Assembly: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Presider: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on Him in your heart by faith, with Thanksgiving.

All are welcome to come forward to the table. You may stand or kneel. Please extend your palm to receive the bread. The cup is filled with alcoholic wine. You may drink from the cup by guiding the chalice to your lips, or you may “intinct” by dipping the bread in the cup. If you desire to receive a blessing rather than communion, please fold your arms across your chest. During the administration of Communion, those desiring prayer for healing, the laying-on-of-hands, are invited to the Healing Station.
