Liturgical Notes Our liturgy this morning is a celebration first and foremost of Mary, Virgin Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ. In a very real yet mystical way, this parish church, named for the Beloved Disciple who with Mary stood at the foot of the Cross, is very much under the patronage and protection as well of Our Lady. St. John’s and the whole Church owes Mary our love and gratitude for the gift of her Son, by whom, and with whom, and in whom we are equipped to do every good work, to the greater glory of God, the edification of God’s People, and in service to the whole world God created and loved so much that God in Christ Jesus became incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary. While there are several Marian feasts in the Church’s calendar, the mid-August Feast of Saint Mary the Virgin traditionally focuses on Mary’s reward at the end of her long and faithful life. We celebrate her glorification in heaven, which the dogma of the Assumption as articulated in the Roman Catholic Church and the mystery of the Dormition as observed in the Orthodox Church seek to express. Both Roman Catholic and Orthodox theology teach that Mary has already been bodily resurrected, something all Christians will undergo at the second coming, and exists in heaven in that glorified state that all the saints will only enjoy after the Last Judgment. While this teaching is not an official Anglican/Episcopal doctrine, many Anglo-Catholics accept it as authoritative.

Music Notes The opening voluntaries, originally improvised at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 1919, are based on the first and final sections of text of the Magnificat. In “My soul doth magnify the Lord,” Mary’s song of joy and praise upon hearing she would bear the Christ child, appears in a merry lyrical texture of two against three. Then, in “He remembering his mercy, hath holpen his servant Israel; as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever,” the imminent fulfillment of ancient prophecy is depicted in the long-held chords and the pedals slowly descending as if from heaven to earth; the gentle dissonances resolve into meditative peace. The offertory anthem, sung by upper voices (including a few Professional Choristers of The Choir School of Newport County, who learned it at choir camp this past week), was written for a competition for the Tenth Anniversary of the St. Thomas Choir School Girl Chorister Course, Summer 2015. While it didn’t win, one of the English judges liked it enough to purchase it for use at Ely Cathedral. It’s somewhat daunting to write a “new” Magnificat, given the centuries of celebrated settings and their great variety of treatment of the text, emphasizing this or that. The mood here focuses on merriment, buoyed by an independent organ part, with a few prayerful bits. When Franz Biebl was an organist/choirmaster near Munich he had in his church choir a fireman. It was common for companies, factories, police and fire departments, etc. to sponsor an employees’ choir, which often would participate in choral competitions and festivals with other similar choirs. This fireman asked Biebl to please compose something for his fireman’s choir for such an occasion. The result was the Ave Maria (original double male choir version). It was written before May 1959, and published in 1964. The piece gained practically no attention in Germany for many years. However, when Biebl was the head of choral programs for the Bavarian Radio, he made a habit of inviting American choirs to come to Munich and sing on the radio and with other German choirs. One of these choirs, the Cornell University Glee Club, was introduced to his Ave Maria in 1970 and brought it back to the U.S., where it became increasingly popular. When Chanticleer recorded it, it became a hit, not only in the US but in Germany too, which now considered the piece must be special as it was such a hit in America! Biebl did arrangements for other voicings, and the seven-part mixed choir arrangement is now probably the most popular. The text is unique in its conjoining of the Angelus and the Ave Maria. (Note by Wilbur Skeels, publisher of some of Biebl’s other works.) Missa Zabriskie, a congregational Mass setting based on the hymn Sweet Sacrament Divine by the Rev. Francis Stanfield, is dedicated to The People of The Zabriskie Memorial Church of Saint John the Evangelist, Newport, Rhode Island (Past, Present, and Future). Stanfield was an English priest who worked in London’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster. He published over a dozen devotional hymns including one set to a tune written in about 1878 by Edward Elgar, another famous Roman Catholic composer. Stanfield’s father, the prominent marine painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, was named for the slave trade abolitionist Thomas Clarkson and was a friend of Charles Dickens. The devout Stanfields were known not just for brilliance in their respective art-forms but also for their “personal simplicity and modesty.” The organ part of the Gloria contains two hymns for Maundy Thursday: Pange Lingua and Ubi caritas.

Opening Acclamation

Collect for Purity

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name, through Christ our Lord.

People Summary of the Law

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, who hast taken to thyself the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of thine incarnate Son: Grant that we, who have been redeemed by his blood, may share with her in the glory of thine eternal kingdom; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament (Sitting) Isaiah 61:10-11

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. Reader The word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 34:1-8 Anglican Chant by Ivor Atkins (1869-1953) 1. I will alway give thanks unto the Lord; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord; * the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3. O praise the Lord with me, * and let us magnify his Name together. 4. I sought the Lord, and he heard me; * yea, he delivered me out of all fear. 5. They had an eye unto him, and were lightened; * and their faces were not ashamed. 6. Lo, the poor crieth, and the Lord heareth him; * yea, and saveth him out of all his troubles. 7. The angel of the Lord tarrieth round about them that fear him, * and delivereth them. 8. O taste, and see, how gracious the Lord is: * blessed is the man that trusteth in him. 9. O fear the Lord, ye that are his saints; * for they that fear him lack nothing.

Epistle Galatians 4:4-7

But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Holy Gospel Luke 1:46-55 Deacon The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory be to thee, O Lord.

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Offertory anthem Magnificat

My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm:

he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel:

as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Sursum Corda

Facing the Altar, the Celebrant proceeds It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God; because thou didst give Jesus Christ, thine only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the holy Ghost, was made very Man of the substance of the Virgin Mary his mother; that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become thy children. Therefore, with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Sanctus and Benedictus

Canon of the Mass The People kneel as able, or sit. The Celebrant continues

All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again: For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took Bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, This is my body, which is given for you, do this in remembrance of me.” Likewise, after supper, he took the Cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins; do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” Wherefore O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy Divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness, vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness, mercifully to accept this, our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy

Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

Presentation & Spiritual Communion

For those who cannot receive Holy Communion, the Celebrant presents the Body and the Blood in blessing, similar in devotional intent and meaning to Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, since it is the Body and Blood of Christ that blesses us in the Sacrament.

The server rings the bell and the Celebrant communicates himself and any others in the Chancel.

Non-communicants may wish to add the following prayer during this time.

In union, O Lord with the faithful at every altar of thy Church where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, and in particular the altar of St. John’s, I offer thee praise and thanksgiving. I present to thee my soul and body, with the earnest wish that I may always be united to thee. And since I cannot now receive thee sacramentally, I beseech thee to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to thee, and embrace thee with all the affections of my soul. Let nothing ever separate thee from me. May I live and die in thy love. Amen.
