Ever fancied a romance on board a ship? Dinner dates in a new city every week? Well for Matt and Anna Scott...this became a reality! On February 17th 2010, the Pacific Link, sailing from New Zealand, arrived in Newcastle for the beginning of the Australia and PNG Medical Ship Tour. An unsuspecting Matt Scott who had joined the ship in his home country of New Zealand was busy working on board in the ship’s engine room. Once in Newcastle, Anna, also unsuspecting and part of YWAM Townsville’s Public Relations team jumped on board. So was it love at first sight? “I think it was more through the conversations we first had” explained Anna. It only took a couple of weeks for the pair to realise that they shared a special like-mindedness and of course a mutual attraction! Anna recounts, “It was great that we both not only wanted to do outreaches in PNG, but we had a mutual spirit of wanting adventures too.” Even the way that Matt proposed to Anna reflects their love of adventure. “He proposed on top of a mountain range where I grew up. I was enjoying watching the sunset and next thing he was asking me to marry him”, she smiled. Having now been married for a year and a half, the cosy couple are happy to discuss their vision for the future. Anna says, “We both have a passion for community development in PNG; to see improved quality of life and sustainable improvement in the rural communities where we work.” The Scotts are looking forward to jumping back on the ship this year for another three outreaches. Matt shares, “we have so many friends in the Gulf Province now so we love going back to catch up with them.” One of Matt’s particular passions is to get alongside the men in the villages, work and play rugby with them, draw out of them purpose and passion for life. Not only can we admire this couple’s love for each other but also their ongoing love for PNG. A type of love which is not just focused on ‘getting the job done’ but a love focused on investing in long-term friendships and change. February 2013 edition

G’day from Ken

This year I celebrate 30 years since I first joined YWAM. All those years ago I determined in my heart that I wanted my life to count, to help make a difference in many lives. I have so much to be grateful for, my beautiful wife Robyn, my kids, the incredible friends I work with and the opportunities that are presented in PNG.

Thanking our Partners:

A Heart Full of Love For PNG

Do you love Papua New Guinea?

Meet Jennifer Perry, or as we know her here, JP. Originally from Ontario, Canada, JP came to Townsville with a degree in Human Movement, specialising in Neurological Movement Disorders. After working at a retirement home, JP searched for voluntary health care opportunities abroad. Since 2009, JP has been to Papua New Guinea seven times!

So what do you love so much about PNG that you keep going back?

“I LOVE the people of PNG. They are both passionate and generous. They adopt you into their families and communities and make you feel as one of their own. There are several villages around the Gulf that I feel so at home in. There is one village in particular, where there is a man who considers himself my ‘uncle’, and in the same village, a couple who named their youngest child after me. What an honour and privilege!”

What are your hopes for the future in PNG?

“I believe that many more Papua New Guineans will be investing in and working with other nations. I see PNG becoming a model and source of hope to other developing nations, proving that positive change and development are possible, while maintaining their cultural identity.”

Let us know why!
