I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

• 90% of children ages 8-16 have viewed pornography.
• The largest consumers of pornography are 12-17 year old boys.
• There are 68 million pornography search engine requests on a daily basis.
• 43% of Christians indicate that pornography is a problem in the home.
• 20% of men admit to accessing internet pornography at work.
A priest friend of mine serving in Ohio recently shared with me the program from a Men’s
Conference held in the Diocese of Columbus. One of the topics presented dealt with the
issue of pornography. The topic is timely especially in light of the report issued in November
by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops entitled, “Create in Me a Clean Heart: A
Pastoral Response to Pornography.” Our Bishops approved the report saying that the impact
of porn had grown exponentially with technology and could rightly be considered a public
health crisis.
The Men’s Conference in Columbus offered some sobering statistics:
These staggering statistics reveal that the Bishops were quite correct to address this important moral and
psychological issue facing so many people today. In addition to condemning pornography and its corrosive
damage on society, it seems to me that the Church needs to provide resources and support to assist with this
scourge. To learn more, I would suggest logging on to one of the following
websites: www.theporneffect.com and www.myhousecolumbus.org. The parish has also purchased several
books entitled: “Restored: True Stories of Love & Trust After Porn” by Matt & Cameron Fradd. These books
can be located in the pamphlet rack at the entrance to the Cathedral. Please feel free to take a copy home, read
it, and pass it along to someone else.
It is pretty clear that internet pornography cane be extremely damaging to the moral life. It gets compounded by the shame that can come with feeling out of control and, in some cases, addicted. I firmly believe we need to be aggressive in monitoring the internet use of our children, leaning more about internet pornography, finding recovery resources, and entrusting the whole issue to the healing power of Our Lady.
Invoking, therefore, the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain,

Stations and
Soup for Kids All are invited to join Father Connall and the children of our parish at 5:15 pm on Friday, March
18th as we observe the Stations of the Cross for kids. Father will explain each station to our children and help them understand what it means to walk along with Jesus to Calvary. A simple meal of soup and bread will follow in O'Connor Hall, where Father Connall will present the final installment of “Prayer: Finding Intimacy with God”. Please plan on joining us for this special devotion and simple Lenten meal.
Cathedral Parishioners are invited to “A Candlelight Tenebrae Service” to be held at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral on Good Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Tenebrae Service held here at the parish a few years back had become poorly attended and thus parishioners have been encouraged to join our fellow Christians at St. John’s.

Diocesan Pilgrimage
Bishop Daly and Father Connall will be leading a pilgrimage to the shrines of France from October 2nd to October 13th, 2016. The highlight of the trip will be a two-day visit to the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. The pilgrimage is open to Catholics throughout Eastern Washington and will no doubt fill up fast. Chrism Mass
The faithful of the Diocese of Spokane are invited to the Chrism Mass which will be celebrated at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, March 15th at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Bishop Daly will be joined by the priests of the diocese for this annual blessing of Holy Oils. The name of this Mass comes from the Sacred Chrism which is one of the oils to be blessed and then distributed throughout the diocese for celebrations of Baptism and Confirmation. The other oils to be blessed are the Oil of the Sick And the Oil of Catechumens. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. There will be NO Noon Mass on March 15th, so please plan on attending!

Scriptural Reflection March 13, 2016 — Fifth Sunday of Lent
Is 43: 16-21; Ps 126: 1-6; Phil 3: 8-14; Jn 8: 1-11
“Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.” This is how our Gospel Reading from St. John describes Jesus’ immediate response to when the woman accused of adultery is brought before Him. Immediately after this the Lord says, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
In the original Greek the word used for “bent down” literally meant, “stooped down.” The word describes doing something that was considered very humbling;
quite likely Jesus was trying to put the woman at ease, to identify with her. Jesus identifies with the woman, and He makes a gesture to let her know that.
We often speak of seeing Jesus in others, in treating them in a way that reflects love and caring, not judgment. Blessed Mother Teresa (who will officially become a saint this coming September) once stated, “I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, ‘This is hungry Jesus. I must feed Him.’ Or ‘This is sick Jesus who has leprosy and gangrene.’ I serve because I love Jesus.”
Stewardship calls us to show the same kind of love reflected by Jesus in the Gospel and in the words and actions of Mother Teresa. We, too, are called to find and see Jesus in all we meet, to be willing to humble ourselves if necessary to serve and care for them. There are ways we can do this among the ministries right here in our own faith community.
