The Fifty Dollar Note and the Christian Connection Like his father before him, David learned to read and write using a Bible at the mission school. In the late 1400s Leonardo da Vinci dreamed of building a helicopter and David had the same vision. But Davids idea came from rotating blades like a boomerang. In 1909 David invented a hand tool for shearing sheep. David became famous for many inventions. However, he was unable to secure enough financial backing to fully develop his ideas. David wrote poetry and authored books. He travelled south-eastern Australia for 50 years lecturing and preaching about Jesus. The church David first attended is featured on the $50 note. His mission school was attached to the church. David would say, Look at me and see what the Bible can do. He acknowledged that God transformed his life into a life serving others. David is acknowledged as the first Indigenous Australian writer. As a fullblooded member of my race I think I may claim to be the first but I hope, not the last to produce an enduring record of our customs, beliefs and imaginings. Davids life as a follower of Jesus was so remarkable that the government wanted to recognise his achievements and celebrate them on the $50 note. Will you use the gifts God has given you to praise him too?
