FIM MAGAZINE .76 /// THE BEST OF 2010 5

Special Edition!

The FIM has great pleasure in presenting this special edition magazine that celebrates all the 2010 FIM World Champions from the various disciplines of motorcycle sport and which showcases the diverse and incredible achievements of the riders and their respective machines.

At the end of the year, the time came for us to reward our World Champions. These Champions really deserve a first-rate ceremony to receive their medals and trophies and the FIM put in a lot of effort in order to stage an event corresponding to a level that the motorcycling sport deserves. In fact, the improvement in our sport has been remarkable in recent years in all disciplines: Road Racing, Motocross, Trial, Enduro and Track Racing have all undergone a significant growth, especially in terms of TV and media coverage which has increased enormously. Some of these disciplines are today among the major sports in the world. As FIM President, it was a great honour for me to welcome all the people present at the 2010 FIM Gala ceremony.

For this reason, there is nothing more important than greeting the people who are the most important in the sport and acknowledging the place they have earned with their achievements. The riders are the real actors of our sport. These sportsmen and sportswomen who have attained such a high level deserve our deep thanks and respect and should be rewarded for their extraordinary and fantastic performances. In fact, no world title is easy to conquer, not even for athletes who dominate their discipline as some riders have been doing recently. No title is ever won beforehand. We are also dedicating significant support to the women whose presence in motorcycle sport is having more and more impact, especially in off-road disciplines (Motocross, Trial, Enduro and Cross-country Rallies) not forgetting Road Racing and World Record attempts.

The FIM Gala Ceremony held at the Estoril Casino, Portugal, last December was a great success. All in all 2010 was a great season and one that deserves to be remembered in this special edition.

Lorenzo& Marquez

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Lorenzo: There were a lot of good moments for me in 2010 because I won a lot of races, but if I were to pick the best ones I would say Jerez and the last one at Valencia. My first 125cc victory was a great moment, one of the best moments in my career, but the very best moment has to be when I won the MotoGP World Championship.

Marquez: The best moment of any season is always the victories, and I think the best victory for me was when I crossed the line in Valencia to win the title. That was the best moment of my 2010 season and my career.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Lorenzo: I have not really had any bad moments this season as I did not get injured and I did not really have any bad results. My two fourth positions, one in Laguna Seca and one in Motegi, were the worst moments I suppose. The worst moment in my career happened in Barcelona in 2008, when I crashed and injured my head. When you break a bone in your leg it is a problem but it will heal, but when you injure your head it is very bad.

Marquez: Perhaps when I injured my shoulder. Also when you do not finish a race, which is always a very bad moment. The worst moment in my career was when I was fifteen-years-old. I broke my arm and the rehabilitation period was long after that injury. I was still very young so this was a difficult moment for me.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Lorenzo: That is easy, it has to be Valentino Rossi in MotoGP. We could not beat him in the first two years, but in 2010 we finally beat him after a lot of effort from myself and my team.

Marquez: This season it was Nicolás Terol because he was very consistent. Whenever I made a mistake he was always there. It was an extremely tough battle for the championship.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Lorenzo: I like Max Biaggi in World Superbike. I used to like Joel Smets when he was riding motocross, before he retired, and now I follow Antonio Cairoli and James Stewart. I also respect Adam Raga and Toni Bou, but the one I respect the most is maybe James Stewart.

Marquez: In general I like football, and I support Barcelona. I like Carlos Puyol. He has a good mentality and attitude. In motorcycling I like Dani Pedrosa a lot. When I started racing he had won in 125cc and in 250cc, so I always looked up to him when I was growing up. I also like his riding style.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Lorenzo: I practice trial and motocross, and I would like to do the Dakar Rally one day. However, it is very dangerous so I may not do it.

Marquez: I like to ride motocross. When I was younger I used to compete in motocross races. I switched to road racing when I was eight but I still like motocross a lot. One day I would like to race again, maybe in a small championship.

Jorge Lorenzo Having won 250cc World Championships in 2006 and 2007 Jorge Lorenzo finally added a MotoGP crown to his growing tally in 2010.

Marc Marquez Talented teenager Marc Marquez won the 2010 FIM 125cc Grand Prix World Championship to become the second youngest champion ever, after Loris Capirossi.

22 FIM MAGAZINE .76/// THE BEST OF 2010

Laier &Cairoli

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Stephanie Laier: For me it was the final race in Fermo, Italy. In one way it was not very good because I crashed pretty hard. But the team really got behind me. They were driving me on and pushing me to ride, and I am so grateful to them. With their help I was able to win the first race and also the championship. That was also one of the best moments of my career. Another great moment for me was when I took the lead in the 2009 FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship. It was at Teutschenthal in Germany and I was fastest in qualifying, and then I went on to win both races. That was a special victory for me because it was in front of my home crowd.

Antonio Cairoli: For sure, the best moment for me this season was when I got the red plate at the second GP. That is always the goal that you strive to reach as soon as possible each season, so to get it at the second round was very satisfying for me. I think the best moment in my career was the first title I got in the MX2 class. The first one is always memorable.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Stephanie Laier: I did not have too many bad moments in 2010. One big shock came when I crashed in the first corner at Portugal. When I got back on my bike I was in last place. However, I got going again and it was actually a really good race because I managed to pass almost everyone and get from fortieth position to third place on the last lap. It was not really the worst moment, but at first it was a big shock when I crashed. The worst moment in my career was at the beginning of 2008, during a pre-season race. One guy jumped onto the back of my bike and hit me. I crashed hard and it was just one week before the first Grand Prix. I was injured so I could not ride at round one in Bulgaria and, because of that, I lost the 2008 championship despite winning every other race that year.

Antonio Cairoli: Fortunately I did not have too many bad moments this season. When you crash it is always bad, and I had a few crashes this year, some worse than others. A couple of times I crashed quite hard and that is always a horrible moment. The same goes for the worst moment in my career, it is always the crashes and the injuries that you get as a result. The worse was definitely the injury I got in 2008, which resulted in me losing the MX2 championship that year.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Stephanie Laier: Over the years it has been Livia Lancelot. We started riding at the same time, in 2005. We have a similar riding style and we have the same goal. Like me, she has been at the top for five years and she is always a threat. We respect each other and we have some big battles. We ride hard but we are always fair.

Antonio Cairoli: I think the toughest guy I have come up against in my career so far is Christophe Pourcel. He has a lot of talent and we had some really close battles in MX2.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Stephanie Laier: I respect Formula One driver Sebastian Vettel. He lives close to me, just thirty kilometres away. I like him because he is a normal guy. Even though he is the World Champion he is not arrogant at all and you can have a normal conversation with him. I think he is a really cool guy.

Antonio Cairoli: Valentino Rossi. He has been on top for so many years and he is still up there, so I think he is one of the best motorcycle riders in the world.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Stephanie Laier: I have tried supermoto but I think if I did it full time I would get bored with it quite quickly. I am also interested in MotoGP. I have a lot of respect for those guys because they lean the bikes over so much in the corners. I think I would be a little too scared to do that because the tyres I am used to are a little different!

Antonio Cairoli: Maybe! I have already tried road racing so, in the future, it would be nice to actually do some races. Outside of motocross that is the only sport I like really. I am not into speedway or enduro. I just like motocross and MotoGP, plus the other road racing disciplines.

Stephanie Laier With three FIM Women’s Motocross World Cham-pionship titles to her name German sensation Steph-anie Laier is one of the fast-est women on two wheels.

Antonio CairoliAntonio Cairoli successfully defended his MX1 title in 2010. The twenty-five-year-old Italian has now won four FIM Motocross World titles, two in MX1 and two in MX2.

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Laia Sanz: I think the best moment of my season in 2010 was when I won the championship in the Czech Republic because at the start of the year that was my main goal. It was a close race too, so it was a very happy moment. Every World Championship I have won has been special, so they are the best moments of my career.

Toni Bou: There were many good moments for me in 2010 but I think one of the best ones was definitely in Mallorca, when I won the round and successfully defended my indoor championship. Also in Foppolo, Italy, at round seven of the outdoor championship. This was a great moment because I was feeling good and riding very well. I had a perfect second lap and secured the title. For me this was probably the best moment.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Laia Sanz: The beginning of the season was quite difficult for me because we made some changes to the bike and I did not adapt to it very well. It was a difficult period for me. The worst moment of my career was when I tore the tendon in my knee in Scotland back in 2006. After that I had problems with the injury for eighteen months.

Toni Bou: I did not really have any bad moments during 2010, but the worst moment in my career was perhaps seven years ago at the last race of the Spanish Championship. I had a big crash and I broke my leg.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Laia Sanz: It would be Iris Kramer as our careers virtually started together and we were very close. She won the first two European Championships and I won the first two World Championships, so the competition between us was intense. Nowadays my two biggest rivals are the British riders, Joanna Cole and Becky Cook.

Toni Bou: It has to be Adam Raga. He is a very strong rider with a good mentality and he is always challenging me. He is extremely difficult to beat.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Laia Sanz: I like all the disciplines and I respect many of the riders. I do not really follow just one particular rider as I follow all the motorsport disciplines.

Toni Bou: I like many riders but I think Taddy Blazusiak is a great rider and I follow his career. I think he has a lot of talent. He is a crazy man but he is a very strong rider.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Laia Sanz: All of them! When I get a chance I like to try new things and I like anything on a bike.

Toni Bou: I would like to try extreme enduro and indoor enduro in the future, similar to Taddy Blazusiak, Dougie Lampkin and Graham Jarvis. I think this discipline can suit trial riders.

Laia Sanz Having won ten FIM Women’s Trial World Championships, Laia Sanz is without doubt the greatest female rider in the sport’s history.

Toni Bou Toni Bou took his tally of world titles to eight in 2010 in what was yet another perfect season for the Spaniard, who triumphed both indoors and outdoors for the fourth consecutive season.

2010 FIM ROAD SAFETY AWARD

Concerned by the growing crisis and impact of road crashes on poor economies, Greig Craft established the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIP Foundation) to improve road traffic safety in the developing world in 1999.

His innovative solutions have already had impact in reducing road crash fatalities and injuries in Asia and Africa. AIP Foundation’s creation of a lightweight ‘tropical’ helmet has been hailed as a

milestone in child injury prevention. Its signature Helmets for Kids program was officially launched by former US President Bill Clinton in 2000, and has since distributed 400,000 child helmets in Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Nepal, Nigeria and Uganda.

Setting up the world’s first non profit helmet factory in Vietnam, Greig Craft created a new model of public-private partnership demonstrating self-sustainability. Protec has become a recognized leader in producing quality, yet affordable, US designed helmets for the poor. Protec puts all ‘profits’ back into local communities for road safety education and public awareness campaigns, and employs the physically disabled as assembly line workers.

Greig Craft is a member of the United Nations Commission on Global Road Safety. He was awarded the Prince Michael Award for International Road Safety in 2006, and Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet bestowed an award for his contributions to Road Safety Education in 2007.

ABOUT THE AIP FOUNDATION

The Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIP Foundation) is a U.S. registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that creates public-private partnerships, develops mass media education and school curricula, and implements school-based helmet use and traffic safety education programs to reduce the pervasive and devastating rate of road traffic crash injuries and fatalities in developing countries.

Traffic crash related deaths and serious brain injuries are preventable and this tragic, yet rising trend is reversible. Our ambition is to form generations of safe and smart road users. Founded in 1999 in Vietnam, AIP Foundation has offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in Bangkok, Thailand, and in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

In 2001, AIP Foundation built its nonprofit helmet assembly plant, V-SPEC that manufactures Protec-brand ‘Tropical’ helmets.

AIP Foundation programs include school-based Helmets for Kids, Safe Routes to School, Click on Safety, and mass media public awareness education. Our efforts to improve road and road user safety also include advocacy, the provision of technical assistance and expertise, and the provision of high quality, culturally appropriate and affordable helmets to the market.

In 2009, AIP Foundation, in collaboration with the FIA Foundation and the World Bank Global Road Safety Facility, launched the Global Helmet Vaccine Initiative, an international movement with the objective of “putting a helmet on every head in the ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety.’” The Initiative brings AIP Foundation programs to developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and will work to reduce the projected number of road traffic crash deaths and injury by 50 percent by 2020.

For more information on the helmet vaccine initiative see: www.helmetvaccine.org

IN ORDER TO ENCOURAGE A GREATER AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS WITHIN THE MOTORCYCLING WORLD, THE FIM HAS CREATED AN ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD TO REWARD A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT.

2010 FIM ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD

This Award is given each year and it is granted for rewarding individuals, National Federations, clubs, organisers, manufacturers or other organisations that have made a significant contribution or done something important to enhance environmental awareness in the field of motorcycling.

The independent Jury for the 2010 FIM Environment Award, after having reviewed the 9 candidatures decided to award Team Betti Moto from Italy for its impressive and great work in favour of electric motorcycling and its development. This awards’ candidature was recognised for the following reasons:

• Recognising electric motorcycling is part of the future of motorcycling and is clearly linked to environmental protection by reducing emissions;

• Social aspects relate to educating young people about the negative impacts of thermic engines on the environment;

• Team Betti Moto have committed themselves to electric motorcycling since 1998: they have shown personal will, tenacity, dedication and commitment, both financially and with their time, to develop electric motorcycling and they became the first FIM e-Power International Championship winner;

• Team Betti Moto has clearly shown environmental and technical innovation.

The 2010 FIM Environmental Award was presented to Team Betti Moto by FIM President, Vito Ippolito, during the FIM Gala Ceremony held in Estoril (Portugal) on 3 December.

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON/CAREER?

Camelia Liparotti: The best moment of my career until now is winning the 2009 Pharaohs Rally in Egypt. I was the only woman against 13 men in the Quad category! Being on the podium in front of the Giza Pyramids, what a magic moment! I’ve been called the Queen of Pharaohs!

David Knight: Crossing the finish line in Turkey to win the title was the best moment of my season. It was just a massive release of pressure and a great feeling of relief. There were obviously a lot of other good moments, but that one stood out. When you are racing, it is never over until it is over, and until you get over the finishing line anything can happen, so to cross that line and claim the title was a huge relief.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON/CAREER?

Camelia Liparotti: I haven’t had many bad moments in my quad-biking career. I just had one horrible one. To be refused the departure of the last day of the 2009 Dakar Rally by the Race Director because of an overtime issue.

David Knight: I was disappointed in Poland. I thought I was riding well but nothing seemed to work and the times just did not come all weekend. Maybe the conditions did not suit me? They should have suited me because it was sand, and that is what I ride on and train on every day of the week. Maybe the bike did not like it? It does not matter, I tried my hardest, and when you do your best it is hard to feel too disappointed.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Camelia Liparotti: Even if I am a woman rider, I always compete with men. My toughest rival was French quad-biker Lionel Lainé during the 2009 season. Lionel was a friend and my strongest competitor. On the last rally of the 2009 Rally Championship I had to make a very difficult choice: to lend him or not to lend him an engine. I knew my decision would decide who would be the world champion and who second. Friendship was stronger!

David Knight: Christophe Nambotin was up there all year. If I had a really good test he was never far behind me, and if I had a bad test he was always just ahead of me. He is consistent, like I am. Because, like me, he is pretty good everywhere, there was never an opportunity to really put a decent margin between us.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW/RESPECT THE MOST?

Camelia Liparotti: I respect a lot of amazing enduro motorbike rally riders and now the car rally driver, Stephane PeterhanseL He is also a very nice person.

David Knight: I follow all of them really, but trials rider Toni Bou is incredible. I grew up watching Dougie Lampkin ride a bike so to see what Toni Bou can do is unbelievable. I have a lot of respect for him.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Camelia Liparotti: I would actually love to try a mono-place buggy in a Baja, USA style. I think it should be fun and similar to quad-biking riding. Definitely interesting!

David Knight: I would love to have a go at road racing. I have done quite a few track days and I really enjoy it. I will probably have to chop my legs off at the knees so I am light enough to race! Seriously though, it is something I have always wanted to have a go at and in the future I probably will. I have long held an ambition to do the Isle of Man TT. It is something I would love to do.

Camelia LiparottiTwice winner of the FIM Women’s Cross-Country Rallies World Cup, the now Franco-Italian native of Livourne became only the second woman to finish the Dakar on a quad! An achievement for this photographer who discovered the quad while covering the Dakar on three occasions.

David KnightBritain’s David Knight won his third FIM Enduro World Championship in 2010 after returning to his berth within KTM’s factory team.

WHAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Tomasz Gollob: I think 2010 was my best season ever, and my best moment of the season was the last Grand Prix. It was in my home country Poland and, even better, my hometown of Bydgoszcz. I have been going there every year for sixteen years. To finally win the title, and to be at home, was a very special moment in both my season and my career.

Darcy Ward: Winning the Under 21 World title was definitely the best moment for me. Before the season started that was my target for 2010. It is one of the biggest events of my year, and to win it again was great.

WHAT WAS THE WORST MOMENT OF YOUR SEASON / CAREER?

Tomasz Gollob: I think the worst moment was at round six in Cardiff. I got a good start but I had a problem and my bike stopped, which was not a good moment for me.

Darcy Ward: We do leagues throughout the year, and my whole Polish league was a bit disappointing. That was my lowest point during the year. I did not feel that comfortable in Poland and I did not want to ride. I guess it was just one of those things. I was fine everywhere else. It is a shame, next year that is definitely the place where I want to improve and step up.

WHO WAS YOUR TOUGHEST RIVAL AND WHY?

Tomasz Gollob: It has to be Australian Jason Crump. He won in 2009 and came third in 2010. He is consistent and he is always going to be up there at each Grand Prix.

Darcy Ward: It is hard to say who is the toughest. In each race it does not matter who is challenging or riding the best, I go in it to win it. When I was fighting for the title I guess Maciej Janowski was one of my closest rivals. He was one of the favourites to win it, and I knew he would be up there, and be tough to beat.

WHICH RIDER IN ANOTHER DISCIPLINE DO YOU FOLLOW / RESPECT THE MOST?

Tomasz Gollob: I respect everybody that races a motorcycle. In general, I believe that every rider that races deserves a lot of respect.

Darcy Ward: Ryan Dungey is pretty special. He went into the 2010 season as a rookie in America’s 450 class and he dominated the division. I like the way he goes about things too. He does not have his own trainer and he does things his own way, which is good to see.

IS THERE ANOTHER TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPORT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRY?

Tomasz Gollob: I like all two-wheel sport. A few years ago I tried racing motocross, superbike, enduro and trial and I enjoyed them all. I just enjoy riding motorcycles, it does not matter what discipline.

Darcy Ward: Motocross. I do quite a bit behind the scenes. I have just bought two new bikes so it is a sport I would like to have a go at. When I go home, back to Australia, I will probably do a couple of local motocross meetings just to have fun with my friends.

Darcy Ward Australian Darcy Ward successfully defended his Under 21 title in 2010 to confirm his status as one of the hottest prospects in World Speedway.

Tomasz GollobVeteran Speedway rider and 2010 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Champion Tomasz Gollob has competed in every GP series since the championship’s inaugural season in 1995.
