Developing Your Own Unique Style : Every guitarist that you can think of who has a recognizable style has a trademark (or a small collection of them) that provide his/her playing with a special, unique character. Just as there are basic motor moves in tennis or typing, there are basic moves in guitar playing. Once these are under control, they become automatic, and combinations and variations of them come with relative ease, providing the technical base for a wide range of musical expression. A fact that is not widely known is that there are only 19 basic moves to playing the guitar. Even though this may still seem like a large number of skills to acquire, keep in mind I am talking about all styles of guitar playing, the average player needs to know only about six moves. How many of these basic moves you will need to learn will depend entirely on what styles of music you wish to play. The way to use this book is to work through the fundamental expressive techniques - the basic moves-and technically secure them so that they are available on reflex. Each one of these moves can be added to the player’s style gradually. Remember the basic principles in the learning process. 1. Do it once, right. Then just repeat it, from 20 to 100 times. It can take this long to

imprint, but once you’ve got this motor-programming, complete, you’ve got it. 2. When you encounter a difficulty, isolate the smallest possible amount of information to be mastered, and focus all of your attention on this alone. The 19 basic moves to playing the guitar are listed on page 4. You have already learnt how to play chords and notes .......... Finger Gym Part Two will increase your skill level with the addition of Hammer-On’s and Pull-Off’s. Specific picking hand exercises are included throughout the course

HAMMER-ONS The concept is to have your left hand fingers play extra notes that do not require any additional right hand picking. This produces a smooth melodic sound, very much like a vocalist. The technique itself is very simple: When you pick a note the string vibrates the entire remaining length of the string (if you look closely at the thick strings you will see these strings vibrating) the idea is to select another note on the same string and hammer-down (HAMMER-ON) to the desired note, in a strong hammer-like action. This produces another tone, higher in pitch, without requiring any right-hand move. Thus you are able to get two or more notes for the price of one picking stroke. Another way to think of this HAMMER-ON action is to visualize the action of the little hammers striking the strings inside a piano. Strike first note with first finger. Hold this note down and while the string is still vibrating place your second finger down on the second fret. This will cause the pitch of the note to change resulting in two notes being heard for the price of one picking stroke.

PULL - OFFS Pull-offs, like hammer-ons (since they are essentially the same thing in reverse), expand possibilities of speed, phrasing and articulation, sound and touch. The pull-off technique involves pressing down the primary note of the melodic line with the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd finger while pressing down a preparatory note (higher in pitch on the same string) with the 2nd, 3rd , or 4th finger. Next, pluck the preparatory note, and, while the string is vibrating, pull the finger playing the higher pitch away from the string (toward the side of the fingerboard) in a plucking action. In other words, pick the string a second time with the fingering hand. The pull-off should be strong enough to produce a solid tone approximating the loudness of the original picked note. Great care should be taken to maintain rhythmic control of the pull-off; don’t rush or drag the tempo.

HAMMER-ON AND PULL-OFF REVIEW Contemplate your progress to this point in the program. You should feel a noticeable new confidence and sureness in your playing technique. Continued persistence to the end of the program, even though somewhat tedious at times will result in a professional reliable technique. The purpose of this Hammer-On and Pull-Off review is aimed towards affixing your present maximum technique as a permanent reflex capability, a point at which one may go without playing for long periods of time, but within about two or three weeks of practice, regain your full technique. Important - Each exercise below are played 4 times with 4 clicks in between each repeated exercise.

Synthesis of Two moves: Combining Hammer-On's and Pull-off’s A centrally important aspect of guitar playing is to be able to rapidly interchange these basic moves in a smooth and continuous fashion. This ability to interweave moves makes a tremendous difference in the formation of a individual style.
