SUNDAY MORNING February 28, 2021 ELEVEN O’CLOCK AM

Second Sunday in Lent

The liturgical color today is purple. The dark, night-like color of purple

turns our attention to fasting and repentance during the wilderness time.

THE GREETING David Cole THE CHIMING OF THE TRINITY THE INVOCATION Sarah Lloyd THE PRELUDE Prelude on DIX Conrad Kocher, arr. Henry Markworth

THE CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Psalm 22) Sarah Lloyd

God is holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel, the One our ancestors trusted. They cried out to God and were saved. It is God who has protected us since birth, and is never far from us. God delivers us from all manner of evil. Let us proclaim God’s name to the ends of the earth. In the midst of the congregation, let us give all praise to God!

THE HYMN OF PRAISE Make Our Church One Joyful Choir DIX

THE PSALTER LESSON: Psalm 22:23-31 Tammy Hight 23You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him; stand in awe of him,

all you offspring of Israel!24For he did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted; he did not hide his face from me, but heard when I cried to him. 25From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will pay before those who fear him.

26The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord. May your hearts live forever! 27All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. 28For dominion belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.

29To him, indeed, shall all who sleep in the earth bow down; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, and I shall live for him. 30Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord,31and proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn, saying that he has done it.

THE CALL TO CONFESSION David Allen THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Covenant God, we are quite open about our successes. We feel free to boast when we have done well, but we are not quite so open when things have gone wrong. We do not praise God anyway. Instead, we recognize the distance – between me and you – between you and God – between God and me. Let’s be quite open about it as we confess to our Living God in silence.

Holy, Loving God, you hear our prayers. Meet us where we are with your mercy, and grant us peace. Amen.

THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Beloved, you can look behind; you can search ahead. God will meet you in between. God promises to always be right there. If you believe this to be so, if you believe God is between here and there, between me and you, share that peace with everyone you encounter on your journey. Praise and thanks to God.

THE EPISTLE LESSON: Romans 4:13-17 Amy Russell 13For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants

through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. 16For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, 17as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”) —in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

THE GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 8:27-38 27Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his

disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” 30And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

31Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

34He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37Indeed, what can they give in return

for their life? 38Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Music for this morning’s service is offered by choral singers Maggie Clark and Andy Dickerson. The Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon were written by Rev. Elsa Cook and are adapted and used with permission. The flowers which beautify the sanctuary this morning are given the glory of God and in memory of Mary Lou Young, Jim Young, Lewis Amos, and John Amos, and in honor of Ian Amos on his birthday by their family.
