Organisers’ Message:
Siddha system is one of the oldest systems of medicine in India. Eighteen Siddhars were said to
have contributed much towards the development of this medical system. Siddhar Agathiyar, one among the
line of eighteen Siddhars, is called the Father of Siddha Medicine. His contribution to Siddha system of
medicine and other related fields is immense. Govt. of India has given approval for observing Agathiyar’s
birthday as “Siddha Day” every year. So, CCRS has decided to observe in a grand manner, the first “Siddha
Day” which falls on 4th
January 2018.
SIDDHA SYSTEM OF MEDICINE
The ancient traditional Siddha system of medi-
cine is mainly practiced in South India especially in
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala. The exponents
of Siddha system of medicine are called Sid-
dhars. They are super human beings with high cul-
ture and intellectual abilities. They have tremendous
powers acquired by Yoga practice. They are the spir-
itual scientists who have explored and explained the
reality of nature and its relationship with man by
their intuitive powers and experimental findings.
A line of eighteen Siddhars are said to have
contributed much to the development of this medical
system. They have left their imprints not only in
medicine but also in Yoga, Alchemy and Philosophy.
Nandi, Agathiyar, Thirumoolar, Punnakkeesar,
Pulathiyar, Poonaikannar, Idaikkadar, Bogar,
pulippani, Karuvurar, Konkanavar, Kalangi,
Sattainathar, Azhuganni, Agappei, Pambatti,
Theraiyar and Kudhambai are some of Siddhars to
name. Agathiyar is regarded as the father of the
Siddha medicine. His contribution is significant to
Tamil language also.
Siddha is the first system to emphasis health
as the perfect state of physical, mental, social, moral
and spiritual components of human beings.
Siddhars lead a simple way of life according to the
laws of nature and beyond the narrow divisions of
caste, creed, religion, colour and nation. For
leading healthy life, Siddhars have mentioned daily
and seasonal regimen including dietary habits and
also some code of ethics.
Central Council for Research in Siddha
For the development of Siddha system of
Medicine, Govt. of India, by bifurcating the erstwhile
Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha
(CCRAS), formed Central Council for Research in
Siddha (CCRS) with its headquarters in Chennai and
eight research Institutes/Units in four states namely,
Tamil Nadu (Chennai, Mettur and Palayamkottai),
Puducherry (Puducherry), Karnataka (Bengaluru),
Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram), and in NCT of New
Delhi (Karol Bagh and President Estate). The CCRS,
an autonomous body under the Ministry of AYUSH,
Govt. of India, is an apex body in India for
undertaking, coordinating, formulating, developing
and promoting research on scientific lines in Siddha.
The research activities of the Council include
Preclinical research, Clinical Research, Drug
Research and Literary Research in Siddha. Siddha is
a science of holistic health emphasising both drug
and diet for human health care.
