Commodore‟s Column Mark Erdrich

I want to open this column up with a big thank you to everyone who

helped put on the Camellia Cup regatta. Even with the weather on Sunday, I thought it was a big suc-cess. I also believe that each year we improve on the previous year‟s

regatta, and this year was no excep-tion.

Congratulations to Paktun Shah for winning the Camellia

Cup and Centerboard trophy, as well as Jason Crowson for winning the Keelboat trophy. Complete results are on the FLYC website. Outside of the sailing, there has also been some progress

with a few other areas of interest. Steve Galeria, John Po-imiroo and I met with representatives of the Sacramento Delta Youth Maritime Association and we think we have an exciting plan which will benefit both organizations. More news later as we validate each other‟s understanding of the

plan. The Little Lipton cup is not moving forward as fast as we would like, but we are still working on it.

Finally, we are in the early stages of a plan which would al-low FLYC to have a „year-round‟ clubhouse someplace other than on the docks. This is in the very early stages, and lots of hoops still need to be jumped through. I should

have more information next month on this exciting possibil-ity. The Wednesday night „beer-can‟ events start on May 5th. Just show up for some fun racing at about 5:30 or 6:00.

Thanks, Mark

Vice Commodore‟s Report Naim Shah

April has been a busy month! The Camilla Cup was a fun and successful race

for all! It would not have been possible without all the hard work from the mem-bers involved. I would like to thank Steve Galeria for all of his hard efforts in coor-dinating the event; Kerry Johnson for

setting the marks and his on-going efforts for monitoring them; and Bob Backer and Steve Galeria for designing and constructing the flag holders for the Koho.

The Trans-Folsom was another successful race day – long, but good! Again, these races could not have been possible without all the hard work from the members involved. I would like to thank Karen Preston and Lanette Strain for organizing the event as well as showing us the correct pro-

cedures for this type of racing; Kerry Johnson for setting the marks and his on-going efforts for monitoring them; and Pakhtun Shah & Payton Shah assisting with all of the races! I would also like to thank all who have volunteered for the

Race Committee. We are still looking for volunteers for the races as noted:

Singlehanded Regatta - August 28th

Governor‟s Cup – September 11th

Fall Series #1 – September 18th Fall Series #2 – October 2nd Fall Series #3 – October 16th Fall Series #4 – October 30th

Please contact me if you can help out with any of these races!

A short report this month. The Camellia Cup and Trans-Folsom appear to have been very successful this year, but

expenses are still trickling in, so a final accounting is yet to be made. A hint---from Cup registration forms, the club deposited almost $4000!!! I hope sailors feel they got their money's worth, in spite of the weather on Sunday. Virginia and I were out of town for a week, so I missed the Trans-

Folsom. P.O. Box 156

A single new Chevron fuel card arrived. We have always had 2 (and this is card #2), so maybe #1 will arrive in a separate mailing. Or not. The Franchise Tax Board has reminded us, for the second

time I think, that for payments made to individuals not resid-ing in California, we need to withhold tax on payments made to independent contractors, rents we collect on as-sets (such as real estate, mines, wells, equipment), and dis-tributions to California estates and trusts. Ok, no prob-

lem. From Whiskeytown--a very nice, full color race announce-ment package. May 29-30, discount for pre-registration by

May 7, www.whiskeytownsailing.org. Ok, back to bookkeeping.

Annual Big Brother/Big Sister

Event This popular annual event will be held on June 26, 2010 at Brown‟s Ravine. For those of you unfamiliar with this event,

Club members volunteer to go sailing in the morning and eat at picnic BBQ lunch afterward. Who could resist this? The BB/BS organization plans outings that their Big/Little pairs can attend. For the past 8 years, Catalina 22 Fleet 4, joined by Folsom Lake Yacht Club, has organized a day of

water fun for these kids. BB/BS kids are generally from sin-gle-parent homes and need a good adult role model and friend. They usually have no experience on boats, and maybe don‟t even get to play in a lake. This event helps

expose them to new experiences while having a great time. This event has been so popular that many participants (kids and skippers alike) have come for many years in a row. The volunteer boats are rigged and ready to go by 9:30 AM, and then the skippers meet at the hilltop picnic area to pick up

their kids. By 10:00 everyone should be on the water. Some boats actually sail, but mostly the kids love to gather in an area to shoot water cannons from boat to boat, and go swimming. Returning to shore around 12:30, everyone (boat skippers, too!) get a lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs,

and all the usual picnic foods and drinks that kids need to have fun. The event wraps up with a group photo around 1:30. We usually have about 20 pairs needing a ride, so we need about 10 – 12 boats to sign up. We also need volun-

teers to be at the picnic site to set tables and prepare the food. Please contact event coordinator Karen Preston at (916) 979-9819 to volunteer. Volunteers will receive more details later.

And while you are marking this date on your calendar, just block out the whole weekend. The annual Fleet BBQ will be Friday evening at the hilltop picnic area, and the remain-der of the weekend will be a Fleet overnight cruise. So you can arrive Friday evening and stay until Sunday, hanging out

with friends, eating and drinking, and enjoying the lake. http://www.catalina22fleet4.org/index.html

Santana 20 Fleet 12 News Adam Mazurkiewicz, Fleet Capt. adammazurkiewicz(@)yahoo.com

Fleet 12 racing has been well underway for the 2010 season,

with one-design racing at Stockton Sailing Club and at Fol-som. Racing the spring series at Stockton is a new event for the fleet and there have been 5 boats on the line. There are three more races in the series (May 2, 16, and 23).

A big congratulations goes out to Jason Crowson and Sean and Lance Purdy for taking the class honors at Camelia Cup. This team dominated the last 3 races taking 3 bullets and the win overall. Congrats guys!

Coming up in the very near future is the annual trek north to Eugene for the Memorial Day Regatta. Everyone who knows, knows this is one of the premier events on the west coast. Don‟t miss racing with a fleet of 25 boats. A perfect

way to gear up for Nationals. Planning for the Class Champs is well underway. We have a long list of sponsors who are willing to

donate gear for the raffle, a pro-RC lined up, a killer banquet and nightly gatherings. We will be looking for volunteers off the wa-

ter at the event and some helpers before hand. So if you are think-ing about coming, come on and join the fun.

Once again, to keep track of fleet news, crew, or a boat to race on check into: http://groups.google.com/group/santana20Fleet12?lnk=srg&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&pli=1

Hope to see you on the water!!

California Raven Fleet News

Incredible…for the second year in a row The Raven has

won the Camilla Cup Regatta! This year the Cup went to Toogara-Raven #267; skip-pered by Pakhtun Shah and his crew Naim Shah and Darryl

Pruden. In second place was last year‟s winner, Raven #263, skippered by Wade Hough. Thanks Wade for coming to Fol-som for his event and as always, being a

fierce competitor! Some interesting facts about the Camilla Cup Regatta; Pakhtun and Naim first sailed this race in 1968 in their 505; take a look at

the ribbon they received from the event! The Ravens plan to sail the Wednesday evening races this May in Folsom and they are participating in the Whiskeytown 2010

Memorial Regatta, May 29-30 in Redding. So far there will be 3 Ravens racing. Come join us for some fun! Here is the link: http://www.whiskeytownsailing.org/?

page_id=500 Our commitment to improvement has Ra-ven #267 in the shop being fitted with a new double bottom floor. As well, Raven

#273 is being fitted with new jib sheeting system, spinnaker pole launcher, and a new curved boom vang. These changes are

being done to make the boats safer and easier to sail.

We would like to give a special thanks to Doug Campbell for his continued generosity and commitment to The Cali-fornia Raven Fleet! He has been a friend and competitor since the early 1970‟s in 505‟s.

Anyone interested in going for a sail or being part of the crew on a Raven, give Naim a call 916-273-9733 or drop him a note at [email protected].

FLEET 4 RACING NEWS

Dave Strain

Well, the Camellia Cup Regatta and the TransFolsom races, sponsored by FLYC, have come and gone. Fleet 4 mem-

bers made a BIG showing at both events. Scott Hefty, Mike Rayfuse, Gary Preston, Phil McCaleb, Pat McIntosh and I all participated in these two great regattas. As an indicator of how popular these events were, three C22‟s were from out of the area. One idea that the out-of

-towners appreciated was the use of slips at the docks so they would not have to pull their boats out Sat, evening, and relaunch the next day. Thank you, members for volunteer-ing your empty slips for the evening.

The second day of the Camellia Cup was so windy that the races were cancelled. Madeline and Mike Rayfuse, who were in charge of the after-race hot dog BBQ, fired up the barbie, opened the beer truck, and had a party in spite of the over

strong wind, the blowing grit and dust, and the restlessness of the sailors. Madeline orchestrated a “circling of the wag-ons” technique, which actually created a reduced wind zone. She didn‟t want the dust mistaken for black pepper!

At the end of the day, Mike Rayfuse placed 2nd and I placed 3rd, for the C22 class at the Camellia Cup. Scott Hefty was in the top scoring position of the cruiser class, but that is his story to tell. The TransFolsom race was just reversed with

me coming in 4th and Mike was right behind me in 5th. Gary Preston took first in the cruiser class. One humorous epi-sode in the TransFolsom was the feeling of sailing back-wards. The wind was so light that my boat was actually going backwards from the force of the current of the North

Fork of the river. It was discouraging to see the mark slowly get farther away as I was sailing towards it, I thought. FLYC members, if you have a Catalina 22 25, or 250 and you don‟t already belong to Fleet 4, you might enjoy meet-

ing up with other Catalina owners. Fleet 4 includes other makes of boats as well. Fleet 4‟s primary focus is on family cruising, with racing being an added enjoyment.

Up coming events include the Go for the Gold Regatta sponsored by Gold Country Yacht Club the next big race near-by. If you never been there, it is both a great sailing venue and barbecue. Over the years many Fleet 4 sailors have participated, and some even won the races. The date

is June 5-6, and this year the GCYC club is sponsoring the C22 Regionals. It should be a competitive race as always. Another race many of you might be interested is the Kath-eryn Evanson, women-only race, June 19. That same day is the FLYC annual Lady and the Tramp race where the female

takes the tiller, and sends those „boys” up to the bow and

Page 6

MAY 2010 T HE FL YC TELLT ALE

be the deckhand. Ladies, practice this because those boys will need to do everything you have been accustomed or

expected to do, which should include sandwich making and drink serving. On July 17- 18, the High Sierra Regatta takes place for Keel-boats. The previous weekend Lake Huntington opens for

the centerboard boats. Clear Lake is also sponsoring a re-gatta if you are interested in a short travel trip. Most of the summer racing seems to be out of town, except for the Wednesday night beer-can racing. This is an informal race,

just for fun, and skills building. Usually things start happen-ing about 6:00 in the evening. If the temperature is over 100* the race is cancelled for that day. Safety on the water is more important than participating in

or even winning races. Always make sure that you have the required number of life jackets on board, a throwable cush-ion ready to throw from the cockpit, a ladder of some sort off the stern, and some lines that could be used in an emer-gency. A cell pone or VHF radio is a good idea as well. If

you are sailing single-handed, put out a dragline, just in case you, Mr. Singlehand sailor, goes over board. That line would be mighty good to find and hang on to as you drag yourself back to the stern of your boat, where the ladder

(uh-huh) is reachable. Or, as the Boy Scout motto says: “Be Prepared.” As always, contact me if you have questions. Dave Strain 916-933-2346

As expected the 2010 Camellia Cup Regatta, April 10 & 11, turned out to be terrific outing for the Banshees. There

were ten boats competing and the conditions were almost perfect, although it was a little cold. As John Poimiroo wrote in the CAM Cup press release, “Anticipating heavy winds, the Folsom Lake Yacht Club ran

four of the Cup‟s five planned races on Saturday in moder-ate breezes. The club was forced to abandon the final race on Sunday, due to winds that were gusting to 40 mph….” However, four races were all Craig Lee (#8061) needed to

win first place in the Banshee fleet. Banshee 1. Craig Lee, El Dorado Hills, 11 points 2. Charles Witcher, Sacramento, 13 points

3. Jerry Beaver, Elk Grove, 14 points 4. Pat Seidel, Granite Bay, 14 points 5. Bob Carl, Davis, 22 points 6. Tim Loomis, Fairfield, 23 points 7. Kerry Johnson, El Dorado Hills, 24 points

8. Bob Backer, El Dorado Hills, 26 points 9. Mack Bishop, Folsom, 35 points 10. Rob Cram, Roseville, 39 points

Speaking of the Camellia Cup Regatta, let me take this op-

portunity to thank the Race Committee for their efficient and professional work; Lanette Strain, Joyce Johnson, Jack

Gray and John Poimiroo. I was there too, but just to make sure the group had fun and got time out for lunch. „Everything‟ went smoothly and I think all the racers had a good time.

Looking forward, there are several good Banshee events coming up in May. The first „beer can‟ race of the season, which Kerry Johnson has named “Sink-o-de-Mayo,” is sched-uled for Wednesday, 5-5-10, and of this writing there are

five Banshees planning to come out and play. Then there‟s the second „One-Design Series‟ race at Lake Washington on Sunday, 5-16-10; four boats so far. That same weekend, May 15 & 16, two boats are planning to race in the Lake Yosemite Regatta. And the last event of the month is the

Whiskeytown Memorial Regatta, May 29 & 30, and I‟ve heard from five Banshees planning to attend, but I expect there will be more. Well, that covers the high points.

Remember - “Don‟t be afraid, we‟re just having fun.” -Steve
