By now everyone knows the results of the Folly Beachelections: Tim Goodwin is our new Mayor and Paul Humeand Pennell Clamp won City Council seats; Laura Beck andSusan Breslin will compete on April 20 for the third openseat.

    Mayors race

Folly Beach elections are hotly contested and the voteis usually close. More oten than not, there is a run-oelection or Mayor. Most Folly voters were expectinganother run-o this year with ew olks willing to put

money on which candidates would be battling it out ortwo more weeks.

But in a surprising result, when Folly voters went tothe polls on April 6 the mayors race wasnt even close.im Goodwin received a whopping 56% o the votes in athree-man race and will be sworn in as the new Mayor oFolly Beach on April 13.

Former Mayor Vernon Knox said he was notsurprised that Goodwin won, but he was expecting arun-o between Goodwin and Councilman Eddie Ellis.Tis is the frst election or Mayor since 1983 in whichthere has not been a run-o, Knox said. I was talking

to im at the polling place and we laughed and he saidSee you in two weeks. Nobody expected anyone to winoutright.

Wallace Benson has been in three run-o electionsor Mayor twice against Bob Linville and once againstKnox. Benson did not win any o these elections althoughhe served fve terms on City Council and was Director o

Public Saety or fve years.Im shocked that im went straight in, Benson said.

But Im not surprised that Carl didnt do well. He spent

our years being arrogant and that doesntset well with Folly voters. He doesnt havemy sympathy.

Knox said he elt incumbent MayorCarl Beckmann shot himsel in the ootby not attending a scheduled Meet theCandidates night held by the Folly Beach

Civic Club. Beckmann was attendinga National League o Cities meeting in Washington, D.C., but Knox said that when he had aced a run-o againstBenson he passed up a ree trip to Paristhat had been scheduled or some time tostay home and campaign. You cannotwin unless you stand up there and ace thevoters, he said.

But Beckmanns problems began longbeore that. Personality conicts betweenBeckmann and several Council members

escalated to the point that it was necessaryto hire a mediator to conduct Councilmeetings. He was openly accused atCouncil meetings on public record o withholding inormation rom Council, sta, and residents. It seemed to manypeople that because he couldnt get along with Council, he decided to disregardtheir input and govern as King rather thanMayor.

Beckmann believed to the end that hewould be reelected. It could be that somepeople didnt agree with my managementstyle, Beckmann said, but I think I dida good job as Mayor. Beckmann saidbeing mayor is a much more complex anddicult job than most people realize.Evidently people think im can do abetter job than me, so let him go at it,Beckmann said. All I can say to him isgood luck. Hes going to need it.

    City CounCil raCe

Knox said run-o elections are lesscommon or Council seats. He said sevencandidates running or three seats is aboutnormal and he remembered years whenthere were as ew as our and as many asnine candidates or the three seats thatcome up or reelection every our years.Benson said he never aced a run-o in hisfve races or Council.

Bob Clair, chairman o the Folly BeachElection Commission described thecomplicated process used to determine

i a candidate has won a Council seatoutright. ake the total number o votescast and divide by three (the number oseats), divide that number by two (50%)and add one.

    Candidates Paul Hume and Pennell

Clamp survived the math, with SusanBreslin missing the mark by less thana dozen votes and Laura Beck trailingBreslin by just nine votes. Breslin andBeck will square o on April 20 and theone who receives the most votes will fllthe third vacant Council seat.

Tank you Folly Beach, Hume said.Ill do my very best or you.

Im very happy, Clamp said, andIm ready to serve all the people o FollyBeach. Am I surprised? Yes, but I ran agood, clean campaign. I tell it like it is.

Beck and Breslin have two more weekso campaigning ahead o them. Lavern James, ormer Mayor and chairman o

    the Folly Beach Election Commission

or many years, said turnout or arun-o election is historically low, so thecandidates will have to work hard to getout the vote.

    SpeCial eleCtion

A Special Election will determine whowill fll the seat held by Goodwin at thetime he was elected Mayor. Its back tosquare one or this election, and Folly maysee some new aces and some dierentnames on the signs that line the causeway. According to Marilyn Bowers, executivedirector o the Charleston County Boardo Election, fling or the Special Electionwill begin on April 30 and last or ten days, ending on May 10. Te election will takeplace on the 13th uesday ollowing theswearing in o the new Mayor and Councilmembers on April 13 which, according tomy calculations, is July 13. Te winner othis race will serve out the remaining two

    years o Goodwins term.

    Carolina WrenBy Sarah Dargan harper

he Carolina Wren is a local year-round resident and the largest wrenin the southeast (5.5in long). Males sing about 40 dierent songs andmale-emale pairs will oten sing duets. House wrens look similar but are

slightly smaller and a duller brown. Wrens are easily recognizable by their habito sharply cocking their tails (like the wren in my photo). Now is the time toput out your nest boxes and/or to clean them. Carolina Wrens will readily nestin bird houses, but are quite versatile. Tey will build nests in vacant mailboxes, under awnings, and in gutters. I even know o one pair that snuck in a garage

and nested in an old rubber boot!

Win or lose, Folly Beachcandidates always throwa big party at one o the

Center Street eating and drinkingestablishments, so im Goodwinssupporters started heading or the

raw bar at the Crab Shack as soon asthe results were announced. Tere

was business at hand or Goodwin asmedia olks lined up to interview thenew Mayor.

Huge cold boiled shrimp,Waynes amous crab dip, and some

Goodwin made his way aroundthe room, thanking his riends andsupporters, shaking hands and kissing

    he Sea & Sand Festival,

which will be held on April17 rom 10:00 a.m. until

5:00 p.m. on Center Street and inthe Folly River Park, is the longest-running annual estival on FollyBeach. Te rst estival was heldin May 1990, the beginning o the

rst summer season ollowing thedevastation o Hurricane Hugo.

Paul Chrysostum, owner o Mr.Johns Beach Store, said the wholeidea o the estival was to showolks that Folly had bounced back.People thought Folly was gone,he said. We wanted to show them

we were still here and we hadrecovered, that Folly no longerlooked like Little Lebanon.

Chrysostum called the rstSea & Sand Festival a miniatureversion o what we have nowexcept that it was more laid back.Te street was shut down and lined

with booths selling local arts andcrats. Local bands played in thestreet and restaurants set up tableson the sidewalk.

Ten it sort o took on a lie o its own,Chrysostum said. While it still maintainsthe unky-Folly eel, the Sea & SandFestival has become a major undraiserand is now sponsored by the City oFolly Beach and the Folly Association oBusinesses.

Te estival oers something oreveryone, said estival coordinator SharonGeiger.

Te event will be kicked o by the9th Annual 5K Run and one-mile FunSkate or Walk that will start in theparking lot in ront o the County Pier.

Walkers, rollerbladers and skateboardersare all welcome, according to Geiger, but

will need to register by 8:00 a.m. andparticipants in the 5K Run will register at8:30 a.m. Te entry ee or either eventis $20 and includes the ofcial estival teeshirt.

Geiger said more than 60 vendors will be set up in booths on CenterStreet, where they will oer originalart, crats, and souvenirs. Te street

will be closed to vehicular trafc andopen only or pedestrian trafc rom10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Variousactivities or children at the Folly

River Park include ace painting,Jump Castle, pony rides and childrensart activities.

Music has always been a large parto the estival, according to Geiger, and this year will be no dierent withbands playing at several locations onCenter Street and at the Folly RiverPark. Sara Smile is scheduled to playat 10:00 a.m., the Shakin Martinisat 11:30 a.m., and the Mason DixonBand at 3:00 p.m.

For the second consecutive year, the Landsharks Band will be closingthe Sea & Sand Festival by perormingtheir Jimmy Buet ribute Showstarting at 6:00 p.m. in ront o theHoliday Inn. Well be shaggin inthe sand, Geiger said. Come on outand enjoy the music as the sun sets

and we celebrate the start o the summerseason on Te Edge o America.

Last years event raised more than$8,000, according to Geiger. Te moneyraised this year wil l be used to equip a newchildrens playground on Folly Beach.

    Dear Editor,

I'm sure everyone is noticing the nice weather. In act last weekend 3/20/10the eel o Folly was very much like a daythat we see in the summer. People were walking around in swim suits, windowsdown breathing in the resh sea air. Along with this great day came trac! rac was backed up to Crosby's and it's noteven April! Folly, my concern is that we

need to act and try to do something beoreits July. I understand city council hasmany dicult tasks and our governmentdoes the best job they can. From what Ican tell, there is lots o talk and not muchact. It's time to AC Folly the worst casescenario is we change it back and the bestcase is we actually help the ow o trac. It's been about 1 year since we had our tracstudy done. Tis was a great thing to havebut what have we done with the data? Iattended a council meeting 2 months agoand trac was brought up again by thebusiness association o Folly. One thingmentioned was to manually control thetrac light at the Piggy Wiggly. Tis

is a great suggestion. My point is whyaren't we testing this method now sowe know i this will be a good solution? We have all been to major sportingevents. When the event is over how istrac usually handled? Tey make streetsone way. Folly, couldn't we do the samething and see i something like that would work? From 10:30 am - 3 pm we make2 roads one way going to wash out. Tisopens up 4 lanes o trac in what arenow only 2 lanes. Tis allows residencesleaving to head up a cross street. Ten,

rom 5 pm - 7 pm you reverse it. Tisdoesn't cost anything! Sure it will takesome time getting used to but thereare smart people that live here. Inact, Census data shows there areapproximately 2,500 residences. Ourpopulation is smaller than mostuniversities. Surely we can help better the

ow o trac without major construction? Here's something we could also do. Makeall residences walk within the island (ocourse i you are leaving you need a car)but or all other purposes one must ridea bike or walk. We could do this onceper week like on Sundays or once permonth? Tis might seem crazy but it'sree, it gets people to exercise and youmight actually talk to your neighbors. My point is it seems everyone wants toblame this or eel that their idea is betterthan the next persons. It doesn't matter, what matters is that we do somethingnow so when July comes we know what works. Let's try to do something

and not the latter? One more point;trash. Everyone talks about trash. Whyare we not enorcing this and educatingpeople better? We should inorm peoplethat cigarette butts are trash. How hard isit or the police department to add "don'tlitter" on the same sign that says keep dogson leashes? We also have parks where wecan better inorm people not to litter.Surely with all the smart people we haverunning or the upcoming elections wecan gure this out. Tese are ree, cheapand easy suggestions that I have just madethat I'm sure have been made beore. Ithey haven't, they need to be made. Folly, we can keep the same culture and coolvibe but it's time to act. Who knows thebest case scenario is we might nd a costefective solution that may be outside thebox thinking but works. Te worse case iswe keep things the way they are and dealwith all the trash and trac and get allworked up about parking stickers! People, parking stickers in the whole scheme othings is extremely minor.

    Dear ellow residents,

Id like an opinion rom anybody whohas a moment to send an email.

My wie and I live on the 2nd blocko East Hudson. Excessive noise romCenter Street venues with outdooramplied music has increasinglybecome an issue or us and many o ourneighbors.

Calls to the bars and public

saety rom local residents temporarilyimproved problems with ampliednoise levels last year, but it oten did notlast long or volume adjustments wereminimal. Here starts another summero hell or many o us in the transitionalneighborhood close to Follys commercialdistrict.

A decade ago excessive noise wasrarely an issue. In the last ew years noisehas greatly increased, coincident with theincrease o outdoor venues or music.

Bars like the Sand Dollar oten haveloud music but little is heard outside theirdoors. Tats appropriate.

Jenny and I run a business that

requires us to oten work 12 hours aday. We need our sleep. Others in ourtransitional neighborhoods do, too. Imnow convinced that Jenny and I arenot simply becoming old, grumpy andirritable since others in our neighborhoodhave expressed similar sentiments overexcessive noise.

As visitors increase in numbers, weseem to be ocusing more on catering totransient residents and visitors over theinterests o long term residents. Tis is anunhealthy trend or our living environment

and I think our quality o lie, like ourlocal natural habitats, truly needs someproactive attention.

Many residents want to see un-ampliedmusic only on outdoor venues and/orestablishing limits on decibel levels.

Please eel ree to express yoursentiments on the subject, whatever theyare. Te intent o this letter is to extracta poll o where the sentiments o residentslie and to pass them along to bar owners,

council members and other residents orconsideration.

You can reach me at [email protected] ,and when you respond please let me knowthe general location where you live.

    Best Regards,Michael Dietrich203 East Hudson

    Dear residents,

Regarding outdoor music, SnapperJacks has had one solo musician on the roo

deck so ar this year. It was last Sunday.Last year I had Jef Houts up there. omy knowledge no one complained aboutoutdoor music at Snapper Jacks. Andcertainly no resident came to me and saidHey, Mike....could you......?

Te current noise ordinance has beenchanged our times in as many years, mostly born rom activities at 11 CenterStreet. Carl, im, Chie and mysel spenta lot o time reshaping the ordinance and

    lettersfrom page 6

incorporated input rom many residents. Against my advice, however, my idea oactual db meters was NO embraced.Tis was your solution. Entertaining thenotion o unamplied outdoor music isabsurd. Tis is where the line gets drawn. And some o you arent going to like thisat all, but the act is that, at least rom April-July, this is a tourist town. I you

look at it rom an economic geographicalangle, Im sure youll see my point. Follyhas 2 private communities to the southand more exclusive beaches to the north. We have I-26 stretching 300+ miles into Appalachia and, like a unnel with nolter, Folly is the only place or all thesepeople to go to the beach unless theyhead to Myrtle.

So here on Folly we basically have onesingle commercial strip with a river parkat one end (an attraction) and a pier (anattraction) at the other, then you havethe coast guard station / lighthouse (anattraction) at one end and a county park (anattraction) at the other. And worst o all,

this centrally located highly concentratedcommercial district is anked by hundredso rental properties. So by design thisplace is a tourist town and by deault itsthe only tourist town. Additionally, thebeach proper is State property and thecity is charged with the administration othe property. I guess thats a roundaboutway o saying its not ours. Bottom line is

that people go on vacation, whether it beor a day or a week. Tey like to eat anddrink outside, listen to live music, and buysouvenirs. Its nothing new. And theyrecomin here en mass.

So back to the noise problem.Somehow a lot o people think Snappersis responsible. Just like the open containerproblems. Snaps and Dollar are theonly two places on the beach that haveDoormen - and the same ones or years. Yet

we are blamed. Same or entertainment.Michael Deitrich has been nice enoughto tell me o this new groundswell oanti obnoxiousness. I agree, sophomoricbar management can quite easily enrageneighbors. My business philosophy hasnever even remotely endorsed the notiono increasing amplication as a meanso competing with other establishments.Do you actually think its busy in herebecause its loud? Michaels email said thatSnapper Jacks, being the largest venueand one with a prominent roo top bar, isoten stigmatized by being the prominentbar violating the noise ordinance. It hasbeen our experience, though, that ater

complaining about noise on Center Streetit usually turns out to be coming romsomewhere other than Snapper Jacks. Actually I think it ALWAYS URNSOU O BE SOMEWHERE OHERHAN SNAPPER JACKS because wehave Je Houts up there! Understandingand appreciating diering viewpoints isthe mark o any healthy relationship, butthis can only happen when people have

unadulterated acts. Trowing out thebaby with the bathwater, however, is adiscussion best let or extremists.

Which brings me to 11 Center Street, currently Lazos. Listen to how thisMonster was born. So ve years ago,the city, being elected ofcials and sta, allowed a small benign one story grocerystore with a parking lot (we also parkedon the Ashley Ave side o the building oryears) to be metastasized into a 2 story

restaurant with a beer garden and noparking whatsoever. I think there maybe more sq ootage than Snaps. Te placeis enormous. And with big places comebig issues. And big expenses. Tese bigexpenses can only be serviced with a highprole big business.

Many o you that have watched Helenand I build up Snappers rom Chill andGrill days can see how long it took. Ibuilt and managed Follywood in 1996 orButch Childress. I rebuilt and managedthe Pelican or Harry Klingler in 1998.I acquired the Chill in 1999. Acquiredthe ackle Shop / Scerry Jerrys in 2002.Built and owned the Patio in 2003. And

now Lazos (named or my grandather)in 2010. Lazos is a very nice restaurantdownstairs. It should be able to hold downits hal o the expenses. We dont wantthree bars on three o the our corners otown year round. Upstairs is a dierentmatter. It is a giant behemoth o a pavilionthat MUS be utilized to its maximumlegal potential as it will only produce

revenue in season. For example, this Fridaya band called Jupiters Garden will beplaying rom 8pm until midnight upstairs- outside. Tese guys are absolutely great. Absolutely the best band coming out oCharleston right now. One kid plays thetrumpet -unamplied. Problem is that itsa trumpet. I the wind is blowing rightyoure gonna hear it a mile away. Maybe...Maybe not. But the customers (probablyan even mix o tourist and local) will have

a blast. Tese guys are incredible. So the uncomortable questions are

    1) Are the rights o a hundred customersoutweighed by 10 non customers? Tecustomers live here too ... whether or aday or a year. Tey just dont organizeand verbalize (yet) 2) Does our societyhold it against the musician or wantingto play his trumpet outside, unamplied,in a tourist town during busy season? In a legal environment within a legaltimerame? Tis is not talking aboutsome Skynnard band playing at the SailShack. We are talking about big businesspaying service to a monster building thatthe people o Folly allowed to be created.

And now I eel like Im holding the bag. We take community interaction veryseriously and by not having any partnersor shareholders, understand we have toanswer to that same community. Youare my partners and shareholders. Myestablishments are born o all the peopleo Folly Beach. And that my riends is aact. Call me, email me, understand me,help me, but please dont let other peopledictate your position. Tanks.

Mike KiragesSnapper JacksPS: Got complaints again last night. Its

subjective and unacceptable. Te pushor db meters begins today. I have ameter and a list o acceptable levels romother tourist towns. Meters will end thisnonsense.

Tree out o thirty aint badAt about 1:00 a.m. on 3/26 PublicSaety ocers checking the Coast GuardStation or trespassers observed about 30individuals who appeared to be underagestanding around an illegal bonre on thebeach holding cans and bottles o beerin their hands with a keg in ull sight.

As the ocers approached, the entiregroup ed en masse into the woods andsurrounding marsh grass, leaving theirtrash littering the beach.

Te ocer returned to the area about4:00 a.m. and ound subject #3 near thesite o the bonre. She said she had edinto the woods but had gotten separatedrom the group, who had let Folly Beach

without her. She was cited or trespassand dropped of at the Kangaroo to try toprocure a ride home to Goose Creek.

Give me a minute to get my storystraightOn 3/28 at about 1:00 a.m. a PublicSaety Ocer observed a vehicle parked

on East Arctic and 2nd Street East withan individual asleep in the drivers seat.Te ocer awakened the subject andasked or identication and was advisedthat the subject had none. Te ocerobtained his name and birthdate andran the inormation through CharlestonCounty Dispatch and was advised thatthe subject was wanted out o Virginia orescape. Another ocer was dispatchedto the scene to assist in questioning thesubject who said he was staying withriends in a condominium directlyadjacent to where he was parked, but hegot bored and let. He said those sameriends drove him to Folly Beach. Teocers ran the tag on the vehicle and itcame back stolen out o Virginia. Te

He thenrepeated that the subject needed to exitthe cab and pay the cab driver and hereused. Upon threat o being physicallyremoved, the subject got out but was veryunstable on his eet and had obviouslyconsumed large amounts o alcohol.Te subject was advised by the ocerthat he needed to pay the cab driver $30and he looked in his wallet and pulledout two one-dollar bills. At this the cabdriver said he had wasted enough o histime and was going to leave. Te ocerobtained the drivers inormation so hecould inorm him o the subjects courtdate. Te subject was placed underarrest or derauding an innkeeper anddisorderly conduct and transported toCCDC.

He was driving too ast or hisconditionOn 3/28 at about 11:00 p.m. a PublicSaety ocer cruising Folly Roadobserved a subject vehicle driving North

Teocer activated his emergency equipmentand pulled the vehicle at Battery IslandRoad and advised the driver that hehad noticed he was driving erraticallyand had stopped him to check on hiscondition, which was determined to beshowing signs o intoxication. Te subject

was unsteady on the heel to toe andbalance tests and could not hold his headback and touch his nose with his indexnger at the same time. Te subject wastransported to the Charleston CountyDetention Center, where a data mastertest revealed a BAC o 1.0. Te subject

was booked into the jail and anotherocer was dispatched to tow the subjectsvehicle.

Hed give you the shirt of his backAt 1:00 a.m. on 3/30 ocers respondedto a report o the thet o a yellow teeshirt rom Beach Ware and Gits onCenter Street. Te victim described theman as six eet tall, 190 pounds and

who denied everything, and issued theno trespass order. Te ocer also spoke

hen the original Clash o the itans cameout in 1981, my boyriend was a an. In act,

he became a member o the lms later cultollowing, so needless to say my household was all a buzzwhen we saw the rst trailer or the remake. Tink abouthow oten remakes actually outdistance the original. Butthe excitement o another chance to experience the love

was quickly replaced with pure indignation ater viewingLouis Leterr iers adaptation Clash o the itans 3-D.

Te new version was lacking in so many dierent waysthat the lm was almost laughable. Razzies denitely hasa contender or worst lm o the year in this remake! Te1981 original had a natural progression created by RayHarryhausens stop motion animation and an incrediblystrong screenplay written by Beverley Cross. Funny howthe two things that made the 1981 lm a $41.1 milliondomestic box ofce hit were the downall or the 2010remake. Ninety percent o the lm was already created in2-D beore the producers decided they needed to jumpon the 3-D bang wagon, and the additional 10% wasvisually unappealing.

Lets move onto the plot; oh wait, there wasntone! With three writers and two screen writers, all we

were let with was a convoluted plot. Te lm eels likea patchwork o ideas loosely woven together without any

sort o connective story line. Te dialog was predictableand the attempts at humor were pathetic. Te acting

was as absurd as every other aspect o this lm and orsome strange reason, the actors would sometimes say aline and then look o intothe distance. What werethey waiting on? I hope it

wasnt a reaction rom theaudience, because the onlything I was thinking was,When will this torturestop?

Te lm does not deserveits $63,890,110 box ofcepull. For those who neverhad the opportunity to seethe original, maybe there issomething that makes thelm viable. Compared toother lms o this genre, it

just doesnt measure up. Ihope this review reaches toas many people as possible.Id hate to see olks wastegood money on something

that would look just as good on their television set. I amstill struggling with the knowledge that I will never get

that hour and 50 minutes back. It was a gorgeous day, andI spent it with this lm.

Apalpable ow o positive energysurged through the lots and raterso the Music Farm on March 20 as

our local boys, Dangermun, took to thestage ollowing an opening set by JamesJustin and Company. Tis is our town, they proclaimed, and with nearly 600drinkers, dancers, and a local roller derbycrew in attendance or their CD releasecelebration, their message was obviousthrough the crowds ecstatic anticipation.

Dangermun has been setting the bar

(no pun intended) or island roots rock/olk/Americana/reggae even beore therelease o their debut album, Beermuda,in 2007. Despite their obvious popularity,Dan, Steven, and Mike have retained theirhumble playing or a bar tab attitude. Itis obvious at their shows - the Moonscaperelease party in particular - that they arehaving as much, i not more, un than thoseo us lucky enough to be in attendance. Donot let this laid-back attitude mislead you, however, as these guys take their musicvery seriously. Tis is all made very clearin the content o their songs which areconstructed through the musical chops

o drummer/student-o-the-game StevenSandier, guitarist/banjo player MikeSivilli, and songwriter Dan Lotti: oh yeah, they all sing very well, too.

Teir knack or keeping very precisetiming in their live sets is one o theirdriving orces. Tey can start a song ata bluegrass rhythm, transer into reggaechords, then rock out i they want to, all while gettin unky and harmonizing without breaking stride. Teir jams arenot excessively played out as it is with mostgroups dubbed jam-band. During theiracoustic sets as Ramblemuns, Sandierwill oten slide rom his kit to the uprightbass, Sivilli rom his electric to slide guitaror banjo, and Lotti will hold strong on

his acoustic. Sometimes theyll play sets

strictly in this manner, applying theirmultiple layers o musical talent to thecrowd o melomaniacs.

I you have seen them live beore, thisis all well understood. Dangermuns newalbum, Moonscapes, displays all o the guysmusical abilities, simultaneously coveringa lot o ground style-wise. We startedrecording in February [2009] betweenCharleston and Nashville, ennessee,Lotti says. On this album, there are songslike Walk Into the Wind, MysteryRepeating, and Lawman, which displaytheir bluegrass chops. Lawman, despiteits ironically comical lyrics such as, Cause

when we see you speeding the wrong way,you truly are stirring up some concern, itsconcerning, is rowdy yet precisely timed.Tough the term is redundant, there arejam songs like Moonscapes, and GutterDance. In these songs, Sandiers rhythmsare a bit more elaborate, as well as Sivillisguitar licks. Tey also throw in some verymellow reggae tunes, as very well-writtenolk tunes. Folly local Shannon Whitworthjoins the boys on Con Island, lending alittle more depth to a great song about theisland.

Te path that Dangermun is headingon right now is denitely looking bright.Tis new albums out and they areembarking on two national tours this

summer, playing estivals in the Midwest,

as well as dates all over Oregon and thePacic Northwest throughout the summer. We are really grateul to have met somegood people over the years. Tey denitelyhave experience in the game, and are reallysteering us in the right direction, saysLotti. Te band has recently joined upwith New Frontier ouring, a Nashville-based booking agency which represents thelikes o Te Avett Brothers, Roger Clyne &the Peacemakers, and Te Bridge, wherebeore, they were basically booking theirown gigs. In the big picture, we couldkeep trying to book things ourselves, saysLotti. What they do is bring you up; they

have an extensively proven track record.Dangermun is playing throughout all oSummercamp, a estival over the MemorialDay weekend in Illinois, then heading outNorthwest and basically covering all oOregon with 13 set dates in June. Tey arealso going to be at the Jazz Aspen estival inColorado, which they played in 2008. Onthe Fourth o July they are playing at theFloyd Fandango, a ood and wine estival, and playing at Floydest in Floyd, Virginia, aterwards.

Were just going to keep doing whatweve always done, were ready or whatever, says Lotti. Well, what theyve been doingis working, so it only seems natural. Iyou get the chance go out and pick up this

    album, its very impressive.

As the transition rom winter tospring concludes and the dawningo the tourist season is upon us,

the random sightings o notable musiciansout here on the island are already beingreported.

Tis year it started on Folly Grasweekend, and as the olklore and mystiqueo Folly Beach spreads throughout themusic community - as well as the islandsreputation or being a laid-back, invitingand afordable vacation destination - youcan expect to see and hear more prominentartists seeking reuge here at Te Edge oAmerica.

"Folly Beach is one o our avoriteplaces on earth. We couldnt think o amore perect place to road test our newsongs and play two o our rst our shows, reormed as a new band under a newname," said Jef Birddog Lane, drummeror Grand Tet Maidcart. "Our dearriend and Folly local, Leshall Conklin,

suggested we play the Drop In Deli andhelped us with the connection. Our ormerband, Outormation, has been playing

Te Pour House on James Island since2005, and weve become riends with somany people in the area over the past veyears. It was good or the soul to see manyo them again."

Grand Tet Maidcart is made up o

ormer Outormation members Lane,Clarke Keown on guitars, keys, and vocals, and Grady Upchurch on guitars and bass.Based in Knoxville and Chattanooga, ennessee, and touring all over the EastCoast, the band spent a ew nights onFolly Beach the second weekend in Marchjust playing and relaxing.

We hope to return or anothertwo-night stand and host another ooddrive or the Lowcountry Food Bank thissummer, Lane said. Te people herealways extend the warmest hospitalitywhen we come to v isit.

Tat same weekend, Mayhem StringBand guitarist Chris Steiner and ormerDaybreakdown guitarist Patrick McClary

played the Drop In and Sur Bar as part oa two-week tour rom Oxord, Mississippi, and back. And the last weekend in March,

Te Pisgah Pickers, eaturingmembers o the Steep CanyonRangers, made a stop on FollyBeach to play the Sur Bar asa warm-up or their show atthe Pour House with ShannonWhitworth and Jef Sipe.

From the dead o winterto the hottest summer night,it is impossible to not have a

good time out at Folly Beach,Steiner said. Te hospitable,music-loving olks are always apleasure to play or, and I cantwait to get back. Folly Beach isone o my avorite places to play

in the entire country.Because o the atmosphere

the Folly locals have createdover the past ew years, manybands and musicians are willingto come out here and play ora raction o their standard eebecause they can justiy takingless pay when they look at it asa working vacation. And theFolly music scene is reaping the benets.More and more people are travelling toFolly Beach each week specically to seelive music.

Tere are very ew communities whereyou can go see live bands at seven oreight diferent venues that are all within

walking distance o each other on a Fridayor Saturday night or no cover, but FollyBeach pulls that of just about everyweekend during the spring and summer, and most o the all. Te reason or that issimple: the bars on Folly Beach dont haveto pay as much to book these artists as barsin land-locked communities do becauseits a more attractive destination.

Tis is good news or a town that thr iveson tourism, and its something that wasntnecessarily intended, but more the resulto eforts by the local residents themselves,

the bar owners and their staf.

So, why is all o this relevant? Becauseit shows that live music is a legitimatecomponent to the tourism revenuegenerated on the island and makes asignicant economic impact in thiscommunity.

Is rock and roll recession-proo? No.

But it has ound reuge at the Edge oAmerica or now.

Tis is Follywood - Tis is Te Edge.

Nesting activities begin early or thebeautiul and benecial bluebird,a voracious insect eater that can

bring a splash o color and a lyrical song tomany homesteads.

I you havent done it already, now isthe time to clean, repair or put up new

homes or bluebirds, one o our mostbeloved wildlie species, said LaurelBarnhill, wildlie biologist with the S.C.Department o Natural Resources (DNR).Each pair o bluebirds can produce up totwo or three broods per year. Adults startlooking or a nesting cavity in February orearly March, so theres no time to waste ingetting nest boxes built and in place, orin cleaning out existing boxes. Bluebirdscannot construct their own nestingcavities, as is the practice o woodpeckers.

In the mid-1960s, people discovered thata simple bird box o proper dimensions inthe right habitat could aid in reversing thebluebirds population decline which waslikely caused by pesticides, the widespreaddevelopment o rural land ater World WarII, and competition rom house (English)sparrows and starlings.

Bluebird numbers in the state andnation have been climbing in recent years.During the past 20 years, thousands obluebird boxes have been put up acrossthe country, and this simple, inexpensiveand rewarding hobby has probably been

responsible or much o the turnaroundin bluebird numbers, Barnhill said.Grasslands and large open areas nearorest edges are ideal or bluebird habitat.Since bluebirds do not nest in woods ordeep shade, place boxes in open areas

with scattered trees, away rom buildings.Pastures, large lawns, cemeteries and golcourses are good locations. Bluebirdspreer close-cropped grasslands withlimbs, wires or other perches rom whichto spot insects.

Because bluebirds are territorial, bluebird boxes should be placed at least100 yards apart, Barnhill said. Boxescan be placed closer together i you wantto attract chickadees, wrens or titmice, because bluebirds wont deend theirterritory against other species o birds.Te round entrance hole o the bluebirdbox should be no larger than 1.5 inchesin diameter to prevent starlings romentering.

When mounting bluebird boxes, asmooth metal post such as a galvanizedpipe, rather than a wooden post, oersbetter protection rom predators such ascats, raccoons and snakes. A galvanizedpipe threaded at one end can be obtainedrom a hardware store and attached to thebottom o the box with a pipe fange.

Coating the post with sot grease whilebluebirds are nesting may help to deter

predators, but attaching a predator guardbelow the box is best. A 15- to 18-inch-

wide strip o aluminum fashing wrappedaround the post may also work. Set boxesabout our eet above the ground or at eyelevel, and about 25 to 100 eet away roma tree, shrub or ence to help young birdssurvive their rst fight by providing a saelanding place.

One o the most rewarding aspects omaintaining bluebird houses is periodicallyinspecting them during the nesting season, according to Barnhill. At least once a

week, check each box or nest building, eggs or young. ap on the side to a llow thebluebird on the nest to exit beore openingthe box. By taking notes on the eggs andyoung, bluebird enthusiasts will learn how

long it takes or the nest to be built, oreggs to hatch and or young to grow largeenough to leave the nest.

Ater the young bluebirds have lettheir nest or good, clear out the old nestto increase the chances or second andthird broods being raised in the same

box. o discourage parasites that live innest material, spread on the bottom othe box a layer o diatomaceous earth, anatural material that is abrasive to insectexoskeletons.
