(N) Wednesday, September 10, 7:30 p.m. Preschool programs are presented in a carefully designed sequence to help your child progress from reading on your lap to reading on his/her own. Children’s Librarian Pat Koven will explain what to expect during each unique program. She will also discuss the Library’s spe-cial services and collections designed to support parents of preschoolers. All are welcome.

“Lest We Ever Forget” The indomitable human spirit was evident in the days, weeks, and months that followed September 11, 2001. One year later, the Northport-East Northport Public Library commemorated those events with “Re-flection & Remembrance,” a community art show held in the Northport Library gallery. People of all ages participated in this event by submitting works in a variety of media, from sculpture to computer-gen-erated art. Sixty works of art were exhibited and two pieces remain on permanent display; “The Towers,” a gift from the artist Ed Hall, is at the entrance to the Community Room and our “Teen Quilt Project” is on the rear wall. Our reflection and remembrance of the Septem-ber 11 tragedy is also evidenced by the collection of print, audio, and video resources which the Library will continue to develop. The second edition of our bibliography of materials is now available at the Refer-ence Desk.

illness need support and understanding. Shelly Feig of the Lupus Alliance of America will describe the resources and services that the Alliance pro-vides to lupus sufferers and their families. She will provide information on current medical research, treatment options, lupus organizations, and tools for leading a healthy lifestyle. All are welcome.

Northport Library is pleased to present an exhibit featuring the Northport Historical Society and Museum. “Clang, Clang, Clang Went the Trolley” celebrates the 100th year anniversary of Northport’s own trol-ley line which began service between Main Street and the East Northport train station on April 17, 1902. The trolley traveled three miles in twelve minutes with fourteen designated stops, and cost a nickel one way. The single-track line had sev-eral switching places where two cars traveling in opposite directions would meet and pass. There was a trolley barn on Woodbine Avenue for the two passenger trolleys and one freight car. At one time, there was a plan to connect Northport’s trolley line to Huntington, but World War I began and the connection was never made. The trolley operated successfully until 1924 when the last trolley car ran to East Northport where it was hoisted aboard a flatbed car and shipped to parts unknown. The trolley tracks, some of which re-main on Main Street in Northport to this day, are a visible reminder of our historic village’s past. The Museum Cove exhibit begins September 8 and continues until the end of December. The display will include photographs from 1902-1924, trolley-related items such as tickets and trolley spikes, and toys and memorabilia from Northport during the early twentieth century.
