Dear Luke This section is answering students questions left in the “Dear Luke” box in the Office. If you have any questions? Leave them in the office, and I’ll answer them! This is the Dear Luke for this edition- We do not have any one specific question I focused on, but I did try to answer all the questions put to me by you!

How do you catch squirrels? I do not catch squirrels. I also do not recommend trying to catch squirrels. When I was younger, my sister and grandma rescued a baby squirrel and brought it to our home. Squirrels are wild creatures, and they belong out in the wild.

How many toes do you own? I do not own any toes, but there are ten attached to my feet.

Are you going on the D.C trip? I am going on the D.C. trip and I’m pretty excited for the history and adventure that I’ll be able to experience.

What's your favorite Funnight? My favorite fun night is any one that I and my friends are at. They can get pretty wild and I tend to enjoy myself no matter what I’m doing.

How do I gain morality to do things like homework? I do not know how you can gain the motivation to do your homework, but I do advise not immediately avoiding it as you get wherever you go after school. It’s a good idea to get all and any homework you have out of wherever you store it and placing it in a place you are sure to see it. This should help you to remember it, and maybe get you to do it. Do you have any tips for studying efficiently? How do I balance my time and

get good grades. As for studying efficiently, I have a friend that makes their own study guides and quizzes himself and others all the time. Another friend of mine made a hundred flashcards because they’re crazy like that.

How do you deal with bullying? If you are being bullied I recommend going to a trusted adult. They can usually help with the situation. It can be scary to talk to a teacher or a parent about bullying, but if you’re being hurt it’s important to get help. ALso, remember that whatever the bully says, you are important and loved.

What is your Social Security Number? Finally, I will not give out my social security number.

The Las Vegas Shooting

By: Benjamin Leroy

Some of you may have noticed that the flag at our school was at half-mast on Monday, the 2nd of October. Just the night before, on Sunday there had been a mass shooting at a Route 91 Country music festival in Los Vegas, Nevada. This shooting led to the death of 59 people and injured 527 people. The shooter was on the 32nd floor of a building towering over the concert where he had meticulously planned his attack toward the people.

At the moment, no one knows why he did it and people who held a close relationship towards the shooter reported that he had seemed normal and showed no signs of aggression when they had last saw him.Nevertheless, many people still mourn this unexpected yet horrendous attack against the innocent people of Las Vegas.

This is an image of a memorial set up in Los Vegas towards the victims of the Los Vegas shooting.

The “Bear” fire By someone that was evacuated

On Monday October 16 at 10:30, on Bear Canyon Road, a structure caught fire and ignited the nearby brush. The past few years, the same facility has caught fire. 391 acres have burned and it is 79% contained as of October

Roads subject to temporary closure due to fireline suppression repair and road repairs: Deer Creek Rd., Bear Creek Canyon Rd., Hartman Creek Rd., Dons Lane, Rons Lane. All evacuations have been lifted at 8:00 a.m. on Monday 10/23/17.

The Toll House and the Los Gatos Lodge were booked by 2 am. The evacuation centers are Lakeside Elementary, Zayante Fire Protection District Station, and Felton Elementary School. The evacuation shelters for horses and goats is Graham Hill Showgrounds and a shelter for smaller animals is the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. Many hotels dropped the pet fees because so many people fled their homes with their pets.

The total injuries of firefighters is 7, only 2 of which, were taken to the hospital, one of the firefighters fell down a ravine (50 feet) and into a creek and broke his wrist, he was airlifted to the hospital. The other firefighter was treated for inhaling smoke.

The total fire personnel is 884, the total number of fire engines is 96, the total number of fire crews is 27, 12 helicopters, 11 dozers, and 13 water tenders.

The has been some looters looting people’s empty homes searching for valuables. People are flying drones in hope to catch the looters, but the aircraft cannot fly when the drones are flying.

Technology Apple News

Apple has something to say this year

The number of iPhones sold around the world is still increasing (as usual) but the increase seems to be slowing down and this happened very significantly in the Chinese market, where the number of sales has been decreasing and where many of Apple’s main competitors’ hometown is. This phenomenon is mainly caused by three reasons. First, the lack of innovations or even upgrades, ever since the iPhone 6 three years ago there have not been any notable upgrades other than the increase of RAM size and the support for waterproof. But these features were already in abundance in the smartphone market. Previous innovations, although is mostly already matured technology but were mostly new to the smartphone market.

This is also the start of the second decade of iPhones, ten years since Steve Jobs have announced the first iPhone, that iPhone have defined and shaped what a phone should be for the next ten years, it has shine light into the future of smartphones, ending the exploration of what smartphones should be made by Microsoft and other companies. Apple might hope this year to be a year similar to the one ten years ago since the concept of a smartphone as we know right now might have reached its climax with the iPhone 7, Huawei P10, Google Pixel and others. Many agree that a smartphone (if this concept would continue to exist) will look very different from the one in your hand. Apple with all of it’s “magic” might well start the transition.

Ever since the iPhone 4, there is a two-year cycle of upgrade and redesign, adding an “s” means an upgrade, the increase of the number means a redesign. But this year is an exception, the iPhone 7 is redesigned to become the new iPhone 8. This year’s new iPhone has also included support for wireless charging, this has ended the battle between two different standards, and will also increase the amount of wireless charger in public spaces. But the new iPhone will have a lesser chance of surviving a fall because glass and plastic are the only two major materials which wireless charging will work and Apple do not seem to want to use the glass material. Apple has built a new and more powerful chip into these phones, the A11 Bionic chip. Apple said the chip is designed especially for artificial intelligence and augmented reality, this chip should also increase performance in other aspects of the phone. There is also an upgrade in the speaker, although not a major upgrade, it is still mentioned in the keynote. But the exterior, a very important factor for people to buy a new iPhone is not changed, save for the new glass back that is not easy to notice. Although there are not any revolutionary upgrades or inventions (such as App Stores, Notifications and more) this phone would still produce a better user experience for most users.

Apple also announced a new Apple Watch, it supports cellular internet, able to let you receive calls, messages and notifications (if your phone's power is on) Apple have also announced a new Apple TV that supports 4K. But I believe most of my reader were not interested in these.

Fortnight 7

But since this is a special year for the iPhone line. There will be a special phone. The iPhone X (pronounced as ten). This is the premium iPhone, or as some like to describe it, a fashion statement. But this phone is not just a fashion. It has the highest screen to body ratio and the largest screen in any iPhone ever. It also uses an OLED screen, the screen has many advantages over the conventional AMOLED used in other iPhones, such as being brighter, better dynamic range, and being friendly to the environment (do not contain harmful chemicals), but there are also setbacks, such as not having true blacks, and the possibility of color stuck on the screen. But with a higher screen to body ratio, the home button have to be sacrificed to save space. The gestures, such as press and double tap were now gestures. Siri is now a long press on the power button, this might lead to many mis-taps. The fingerprint sensor is now gone and was replaced by Face ID, a way of unlocking by the front camera recognizing your face. Although many attempts at facial unlocking from other companies have not been quite useful to everyday users, Apple going all in at this technology might prove it to have an acceptable quality. A new feature, Animoji has been added, it is a emoji that uses your expression and words, and also a sign that you have brought the most expensive iPhone. And even with the increase in screen size, Apple is still able to add more battery life to this phone (Please note that with nearly three times the number of pixels than the iPhone 8, the performance of the iPhone X will have the much worse performance).

This year’s Apple announcements have some very influential products. First is the use of Face ID, although many other companies have used facial or iris recognition, most were quite unsuccessful. If Apple succeeded at Face ID, it might become a standard feature for smartphones, just like the Touch ID first introduced on iPhone 5s. But if Apple failed at this technology (which is unlikely) this technology might not be attempted for a few years from now. The inclusion of wireless charging will probably also make the next wave of smartphones support this feature. And even though thin bezels have already been regarded as standard on flagship smartphones, Apple’s adoption of this feature will give rise to another wave of this kind of phones. Apple has also joined the club of having two flagships, one for the majority and another that is much more expensive as a fashion statement for “certain group of people”. Most of the new introduction such as iPhone X, the usage of OLED made by Samsung and much more have introduced changes for the business model of Apple.

The VR Report by Page Murray

Virtual Reality is finally breaking into the consumer gaming market, but making the decision between headsets can be difficult. Sony’s Playstation VR offers the most accessible, easy experience at the cost of accurate tracking and versatility. The headset costs only $400 for those who already own a Playstation 4 console, but its light-based tracking is incredibly limited and inaccurate. Sony’s expensive platform licenses mean that games have to be extraordinarily polished (or profitable) to make it onto the system, but the inaccurate tracking can reduce even the most well-planned experience to a frustrating play session.

Facebook’s Oculus Rift offers a more powerful experience, but one that requires a powerful, expensive computer and still isn’t up to par with the Vive. Originally the same price as the Vive, Facebook has seen the errors of their ways and reduced it to $400, but most consumers interested in VR likely don’t have a $1500 PC at the ready. To be fair, Oculus is the only headset I haven’t personally tried, so I have had to rely on the reviews of others, but things like hardware specs and prices are objective facts that don’t seem to be doing Oculus any favors.

The Valve’s HTC Vive is a realistic, well-rounded experience, albeit an expensive one ($600) with many problematic games. The tracking excels, and many of the games are simply breathtaking, but the high price tag scares away most casual gamers. The huge tracking range allows players to walk around an entire room (up to over 16ft x 16ft) without ever going out of bounds, and many games utilize this freedom to create very immersive experiences.

Personally, I recommend the HTC Vive. It lacks the same polish as Playstation VR and the huge marketing budget of the Rift, but it makes up for this with the wonder and awe of truly feeling like you are in whatever virtual world you choose, without having to worry about staying in the small view window of a discount Kinect (looking at you, PlayStation VR) or spending thousands of dollars for an inferior piece of hardware (Oculus Rift). Oculus is fine as a middle ground, but its price is so close to the Vive’s that it seems a much better idea to just go for the Vive instead. For those looking to get into casual VR, Playstation VR is definitely the way to go, but those looking for a more varied, powerful experience, the HTC Vive is a great choice.

Creative Writing Section The Dragon & The Wolf

Chapter 3

-Jeremy's P.O.V-

"What's your names?" I quietly ask as my voice echoes through the cave. The cave is damp from the waterfall. Slowly moving his tail toward me, the dragon uses his tail feeling around my pockets. Then swiftly moving his tail to my ankle he grabs my knife.

Grasping the knife in his tail, he drags it in the dirt. Walking next to him, I look at the letters he's writing out in the dirt, A-S-T-A-R-O-T. "Astarot?" I ask him. His responds by nodding his head up and down. Flicking his tail at the she-wolf, he sticks the knife in the dirt he writes, D-A-C-I-A-N-A. "Daciana."

Daciana rushes toward us pushing her body up against me. Reaching to touch her soft fur, the midst of the waterfall still lingering on her fur. What is your name, human? A dark and anonymous voice rings in my head. Confusion makes its way to my face as I look down at the young she-wolf. Staring back at me with the same wolfish look. I get the feeling it wasn't her. It was me Astarot. Turning toward the giant beast, I notice him and the area around has gotten dark, inconceivably dark.

Turning his head at the entrance of the cave, he closes his eyes and sniffs the air, causing his nostrils to flare. Smell That? He voices through my mind. Smelling the air I noticed my sense of smell has enhanced. The short intake of air gave off a strong stench of mold and dirt. Thus sending me into a short coughing fit. Try to focus on the outside smells . He says with a dragonish sigh of annoyance. Trying again this time with a more vigorous breath of air, I get a sense of the outside scents jumping around my nose. The grass, the fresh air, water, and something else with a woodsy type of smell. Giving deeper breath to the certain smell, it gets stronger. Burning. Its smoke.

Something Revolutionary

Written by Luke

Chapter 1

The next day, the morning seemed so bright and crisp above those low-hanging clouds. They soared above oceans Earnest knew she was lucky to see. Jordan took a little longer to wake up, but when he did, she was quick to give him a roll from her pack.

“Are you okay?” Jordan asked after a few bites. “It can be hard to leave everything behind.”

Earnest shook her head, eyes shining. She wasn’t the sort of girl to talk about her emotions, no matter how pressing they might seem. “I’m perfectly fine. This is what I’ve dreamed of doing since I was a little girl, just a princess. And this isn’t the sort of thing you can just undo. Even if I was going to second-guess my decision to come with you.” Earnest looked down at her feet, then stood up quickly. “Anyways, I’m excited to see the world.”

Not entirely satisfied with her answer, Jordan shook his head. “Well, anyways, thank you. There wasn’t much left in Earnest for me. I’m glad you came.” He looked down at the floor, knowing the former queen of Earnest probably wouldn’t tell him if she was uncomfortable or unhappy. She had been a ruler, and he a commoner. Well, maybe not a commoner, but certainly not royal. Why would Earnest confide in him?

After the first day, in which Earnest got bored and nearly tumbled from the basket, the week passed like a dream. They continued to float among the clouds, trying to land only once, but only narrowly escaping arrows shot at them by the natives near the end of the week.

But now they were running out of supplies, and Jordan was beginning to get worried. They had no fresh food, and the water was quickly disappearing as they consumed it faster than they would have on land.

And then their situation grew truly dire. The balloon had been punctured by one of the arrows, and they were quickly falling.

Earnest gathered up the items strewn about the basket, panicking on the inside but keeping her cool on the outside for Jordan. Jordan was trying to make out the ground while they were deep in the clouds. He was trying to steer them away from certain death while losing altitude. Earnest had just shoved the last blanket in a pack when they saw it.

A huge shadow, in the shape of a mast, was looming before them. And before either Jordan or Earnest could react, they had already been entangled within the net of ropes, but were then unceremoniously dumped from the basket as it swung down and tumbled to the deck.

Almost immediately Earnest sprung up, brandishing her sword at the gathered men. “STAY AWAY.” She cried, shielding Jordan with her body. The soldiers, panicking at the sudden appearance of the two children and the apparent threat one of them posed, charged.

Earnest parried blow after blow, dispatching the larger and lesser men. She cut at knees and elbows, attempting to protect her friend. She didn’t notice the man creeping up behind her.

The tricky, former pirate sidled up behind her, preparing to strike the fierce girl down. Jordan yelled, “EARNEST, LOOK OUT!” The red-haired girl turned just in time to see the blood and her friend falling, as a surprised pirate stared at her.

A calm voice cut through the silence, speaking in a language Earnest couldn’t understand. The man the voice originated from walked to Jordan’s side and knelt. He called for two people, the larger of which picked up Jordan while the other looked over the wounded boy.

Fortnight 12

Earnest dogged after them, when she was stopped by the commanding man. He showed her a glowing crystal, then mimed putting it around her head. “What is it?” Earnest asked, forgetting they didn’t know her her language. His eyes widened and he grinned. Slipping the crystal about his neck, he winked.

“Hello.” The man smiled reassuringly. “Your friend will be fine. I have my best doctor looking after him. Now, put this crystal about your neck so you speak our language too. Also, I'm very sorry about Dalas. He isn't used to, well, us.”

Earnest accepted the crystal from him and was surprised when she found that it turned green as it settled around her neck, the same as her current glow. And then she looked up at the truly sympathetic looking man. “Lovely to meet you, good sir. Now, can please tell us where we are and what your name is?”

He smiled, white teeth gleaming. “My name is Sky Lord Jared Desmond. You are on the Pegasus, a vessel of the Sky Islands. But, I have questions as well. What is your name?”

Earnest glanced at her feet and her sheathed sword. “I am Queen Earnest, and that is the truth. Before you ask any more questions, though, can I go to my friend? He’s helped me and I don’t want him to die alone, if his injuries are that severe.”

Jared nodded, and told another man to lead her down to Jordan. Then, looking her in the eye, kneeling down to do so, he told her, “If you need me, I’ll be in the captain’s quarters. I’ll make sure you and your friend are treated well. I hope that your friend recovers, Queen Earnest.”

Earnest bowed her head, “Thank you. I’m sure your hospitality would be welcome.” Jordan was on a table, a small green-haired boy tending to him. Earnest walked next to

him, watching his movements closely. They were methodical, but more than that they were loving. He seemed to enjoy his work, efficient but also careful. At last, he finished with his bandages and turned to Earnest.

“Hey.” He casually grinned, his bright eyes the same color as her glow, a deep warm brown. “I’m Ian. He’ll be fine. Although, I’m guessing you knew that. And, if you did know that, you also know that if Ysaerg’s blow had hit the target intended, you would not be hurt.”

Earnest stared at him, eyes wide. “Yes, I did know that. Um, my name is Earnest?” She trailed off as she saw him take off his shirt, revealing two, large feathery objects. They were brownish, and as they spread, she realized they were wings. A bird’s wings. Ian turned, and seeing her expression, laughed. “I’m guessing you don’t see many winged people, do you.” He chuckled and pulled on a grey shirt, glancing back down at Jordan before he brushed past her. “So, Earnest,” He almost seemed to savor her name, “How do you like my uncle? Also, have you noticed you’re pink?

Sleep Deprivation

By Kaylee Martin What’s the longest you can stay up without becoming a groggy, sleepy zombie? A few

hours, a single night? The current record holder for staying up willingly the longest goes to a 17

year old male, Randy Gardner for a science fair project conducted in 1965 by staying up for 264

hours. (11 days) In the end he didn’t suffer from any long term health effects but there were

noticeable changes in his mood and personality. While there have been other claims for staying

up. The Guinness World Records (which no longer includes sleep deprivation records due to the

possible health risks) has in the past listed the Finn Toimi Soini as having gone without sleep for

276 hours in 1964 and Maureen Weston, as having stayed awake for 449 hours (almost 19 days)

in 1977, but these are not considered to be scientifically documented.

The reasons we still hear about Gardner is that his school project drew the attention of a

famous sleep researcher William C. Dement, who observed the teen the last few days of his

sleeplessness. There are a few things that can cause sleep deprivation. Like daytime habits or

just psychological and medical issues like anxiety, stress, and depression are all causes of

insomnia. Daytime habits like napping during the day, drinking caffeinated beverages late in the

day, eating sugary foods or heavy meals too close to bedtime, and not getting enough exercise

are all examples of daytime habits that can impact your ability to sleep at night even just having

an irregular sleep schedule will affect your sleep even when you “break” that habit. A common

habit linked to insomnia is over stimulating the brain during the day, this makes it harder to

clear your head at night. We overstress our brains by interrupting tasks to check our phones,

emails, or social media. The brain becomes so used to constantly seeking something new to

stimulate our brain and so often that when it comes time to settle down at night your brain is

still looking for the next information fix. As well as avoiding screens in the hours before bedtime,

setting aside specific times during the day for checking messages and social media, allows your

brain to spend more time to focus on one task. Taking short breaks from during the day and

doing non-stimulating activities like making sure your room is an appropriate environment. The

ideal environment is quiet, dark, comfortable and making sure that you feel safe in that area.

The brain usually processes this as a good sleep inducing environment especially the safe part.

The reason that we need a room to be dark in order to induce sleep has to do with the

levels of light that our eyes detect and send that information to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, a

Fortnight 17

small part in the brain directly above the optic chiasm, what this controls is called our circadian

rhythm. The suprachiasmatic nucleus is the area of the brain where the optic nerves cross. While

the optic nerves are each of the second pair of cranial nerves, transmitting impulses to the brain

from the retina at the back of the eyes. They send signals to the pineal gland to produce

melatonin. Electronic screens emit a blue light that disrupts your body’s production of

melatonin that helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle. It does this by sending ‘false’ light level

information to the brain because the screen is what we’re focused on.To make a more peaceful

sleeping environment, avoid using electronics before bed.

We need sleep in order to keep our minds and bodies healthy after 24 hours of no sleep

you're at a 0.1% blood alcohol level. You begin to lose your lack of judgement, your coordination

deteriorates, irritability sets in making it easier to get mad at others, pain becomes more intense

and the immune system suffers. It reduces your coordination as though you’re drunk.

One popular myth about sleep deprivation is that after 3 days of no sleep you become

clinically insane. This is false, I would know… Unless the myth is true then someone could call

me insane and their statement would be true. The reason this myth became so popular is

because there have been people known to hallucinate when they didn't get enough sleep but in

all truth it is impossible to link insanity and loss of sleep without scanning brain activity

constantly. Sleep deprivation can not lead to a psychotic episode when awake but they lead to

problems once they finally get some sleep. They might have problems staying asleep or getting

anything out of sleeping.

Why do sleep schedules get so out of whack in the first place? Even if your sleep schedule

gets messed up one night it can affect other nights especially if it occurs more than one night in a

row your body gets used to this new schedule and even if you try to get your sleep back to

normal, depending on the person, can be hard.

Sleep is very important and essential. Our bodies all require long periods of sleep in

order to restore and rejuvenate, to grow muscle, repair tissue, and synthesize hormones. By not

getting sleep, you’re putting your body at a risk for infection as the immune system slows down

of insufficient sleep.

Halloween Special Article: The Monsters of Our World!

Fortnight 18

Wendigo: The Wendigo is a large part wolf, part elk, and part human that craves human flesh with incredible strength and agility for once being human. There are only a few ways that a person can turn into one these are cannibalizing on another human corps, having prolonged exposure to these beasts, and in some stories getting bitten by them and surviving it can turn you into one. Luckily for us they live on the east coast so we are safe… until the DC trip. Revenant (not the movie!): Revenants are similar to zombies but way more intriguing and stronger. These beasts wield weapons such as swords or even whale bones and sometimes they are covered in a thick armor. With glowing eyes they will constantly seek revenge on those who wronged them in life with surprising speed. Thankfully they live in northern Europe. Ahuizotl: The aztec beast is said to be somewhere between a dog and a monkey that dwells at the bottom of rivers waiting for its next victim which it will grab with its human like hands. It will consume your eyes, teeth, and fingers. After it does this it will slowly kill you by drowning you. Mongolian Death Worm: The Mongolian Death Worm is a beast that lives in mongolia and borrows through the soft dirt and sands hunting for their prey. They average at a length of 3 to 4 feet long and are widely believed to be real. There have been attempts to catch them using machines called Thumpers based off the machines by the same name used in the book Dune to lure giant desert dwelling worms away (yes a person actually did this to try to catch this thing). Pukwudgies: Pukwudgies are small humanoid creatures covered in fur with shapeshifting powers, magic, create fire, and shoot poison arrows, and are surprisingly intelligent. Mostly mischievous pranksters specifically out to make our lives miserable… most of the time. The other time is that they will kidnap people and kill/brutally torture you by filling you with poison and blinding you by shoving sand in your eyes. They tend to live on the east coast. Dark watchers: They are 8 ft tall shadow like creatures that stand there watching and disappearing before your eyes. They won't bother you as long as you don't bother them, but if you do, well, you might not be seen again. Scariest of all they live in our area. The most recent sighting was in big basin by a high school principal.

The Golden State Warriors By: Your local Sports guy

Since the last issue, of the Fortnight, you guys suggested that I should do the

newest sport section on the Golden State Warriors. The Golden State Warriors are the local professional Basketball team (for the people who don’t know who they are). In the past few years they have been playing phenomenal becoming champions 2 times in the last 3 years. Last year , excitingly, The Warriors won The Finals crowning them the NBA champion. Recently, last season, the Warriors made a deal that got them Basketball superstar, Kevin Durant, to boosted their chances of winning the Finals (which they did). There first game in the preseason was against the Denver Nuggets on September 30, 2017 and they lost 108-102. Very recently the Warriors released some new jerseys (called the association jersey) that range in price of $70.00 to $200.00 and a new neat trick on the jerseys is that they have a barcode on the bottom of the jersey which if you sca tells you a history on the player on the jersey and is being updated if anything happens to the player that is on your jersey. As of now there isn't a customizable version of this jersey right now (so you cant have your own history on a jersey(sadly).

<<<<<<<P.S. On October 17 2017 The Warriors had their first game against The

Houston Rockets and sadly lost(by a frustrating 1 point)>>>>>>>
