    THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Prelude The King of Love My Shepherd Is Ancient Irish tune, arr. Hodge

Processional Hymn This is my Father’s world CCLI: 3163379

This is my Father’s world, why should my heart be sad? The Lord is king, let the heavens ring

God reigns, let the earth be glad!

  • Celebrant: Blessed be God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

    Collect for Purity (in unison)

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your Holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Law Jesus said: you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40

Kyrie Celebrant: Lord, have mercy. People: Christ, have mercy. Celebrant: Lord, have mercy.

    Gloria arr. Hodge

  • Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Celebrant: Let us pray.

Collect O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading (all be seated) Exodus 32:1, 7-14 (Pew Bible p. 69) Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Gradual (all remain seated) Psalm 51:1-17 Refrain:

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your *steadfast love; in your great compassion blot out *my offenses. 2 Wash me through and through *from my wickedness, and cleanse me *from my sin. 3 For I know *my offenses, and my sin is *ever before me. 4 Against you only have I sinned and done what is evil *in your sight; so you are justified when you speak and right *in your judgment. (Refrain) 5 Indeed, I was born *steeped in wickedness a sinner from my *mother's womb. 6 Indeed, you delight in truth *deep within me, and would have me know wisdom *deep within. 7 Remove my sins with hyssop and I *shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be pur*er than snow. (Refrain)

  • 8 Let me hear *joy and gladness; that the body you have broken *may rejoice. 9 Hide your face *from my sins, and blot out all my wickedness. 10 Create in me a clean *heart, O God, and renew a right spir*it within me. (Refrain) 11 Cast me not away *from your presence, and take not your Holy Spir*it from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of *your salvation and sustain me with your boun*tiful Spirit. 13 Let me teach your ways *to offenders, and sinners shall be re*stored to you. 14 Rescue me from bloodshed, O God of *my salvation, and my tongue shall sing *of your righteousness. (Refrain) 15 O Lord, o*pen my lips, and my mouth shall pro*claim your praise. 16 For you take no delight in sacrifice, or *I would give it.

You are not pleased *with burnt offering. 17 The sacrifice of God is a *troubled spirit; a troubled and broken heart, O God, you will *not despise. (Refrain)

Second Reading 1 Timothy 1:12-17 (Pew Bible p. 963) Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

    Sermon

Nicene Creed (all stand and recite in unison)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

  • Prayers of the People (all kneel)

    The Deacon says:

Please offer your prayers and thanksgivings this morning, either out loud or silently, and after the words “Lord, in your mercy” respond with “Hear our prayer”. Let us pray.

The Deacon concludes with the following prayer: Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

    Confession (in unison)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

    Absolution

    The Celebrant says:

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Comfortable Words Words and music by Andy Piercy

  • Peace (all stand) Celebrant: The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And with your spirit.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

    Sursum Corda

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name.

Sanctus et Benedictus Words: Traditional Music: Justin Philip Brooks, Tiffany Brooks

  • The Prayer of Consecration (all kneel)

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it,* and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

  • We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy sacrament, and be made one body with him, so that he may dwell in us and we in him. And bring us with all your saints into the fullness of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer The Lord’s Prayer Taize

  • The Fraction

Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Prayer of Humble Access (in unison)

We do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

    Communion

All baptized Christians who profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome to receive Holy Communion in this church. All who do not wish to receive are still welcome to come forward to the altar rail. You may cross your arms across your chest as an indication you do not wish to receive, and a prayer of blessing will be offered for you instead.

Gluten-free wafers are available. If you would like to receive a gluten-free wafer, simply ask the priest when he comes to you at the communion rail.

Additional prayer is offered by our Altarside Prayer Team on either side of the altar, if you are in need of specific prayer, they would be happy to pray with you after you have received communion.

Verse God is my shepherd; I won't be wanting, I won't be wanting

I will not fear, cause you are with me; You’re always with me

Chorus Your shepherd’s staff comforts me

You are my feast in the presence of enemies Surely goodness will follow me, follow me

  • Just As I Am Words: Charlotte Elliott, 1835 Music: William Batchelder Bradbury, 1849

Just as I am, without one plea, But that thy blood was shed for me,

And that thou bidd'st me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, and waiting not

To rid my soul of one dark blot, To thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt; Fightings and fears within, without,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, thou wilt receive; Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve,

Because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, thy love unknown

Hath broken every barrier down; Now to be thine, yes, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

    Post Communion Prayer (in unison)

Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ: and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. And now Father, send us out into the world to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. The Blessing The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen.
