A Meditation by Msgr. Dunleavy A Meditation by Msgr. Dunleavy A Meditation by Msgr. Dunleavy A Meditation by Msgr. Dunleavy

Parochial Administrator

Luke 10: 25-37

The parable of the Good Samaritan can give focus to our prayer and meditation as you, I, and people in our parish deal with the emotions, feelings, and thoughts that have surfaced because of the information we have been given about Monsignor McLoone.

Jesus notes in his parable that a man was traveling on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. The man is robbed, beaten, left wounded and lying along the road. Two people pass by. Then, a Samaritan stops and tends to the man. The Samaritan cleans, applies ointment, and bandages the wounds so the healing process may begin. The Samaritan then carries the victim to an Inn of safekeeping where he continues to care for him.

Jesus does not tell us what the people of his day knew, namely, that the road from Jerusalem to Jericho was a dangerous road. It was dangerous because it was a steep road running down the side of a mountain, narrow in places where people could fall off, get hurt, or even fall from a cliff to their death. It was also dangerous because robbers would wait for passersby who were loaded down with provisions, food, and purchases they had made for business and home in Jerusalem where the markets were. Bandits would prey on people traveling this dangerous road. They were easy targets for their evil intent.

To use this parable as a meditation, picture yourself traveling on the road of life which is also a dangerous road. See your soul filled with love, faith, goodness, happiness, peace . . . . Along life’s way, there are harsh realities like scandal, disappointment, sorrows, addiction, greed, anger, lust, envy, pride, disease, death of loved ones, opioids, chemical warfare . . . that can rob, wound, knock us down.

How has the information you have been given about Monsignor McLoone affected you? Has something been taken from you? Have you been robbed? Are you wounded? Injured? Do you feel you have been left lying on the road and people are passing you by?

If so, in your meditation, see Jesus coming to you as a Good Samaritan, stooping to examine, to treat, and to tend your wounds with his merciful love and grace. Jesus, your Good Samaritan, then lifts you up and brings you to an inn of safekeeping.

Jesus offers you many inns of safekeeping. Inns of safekeeping can be found in prayer, Mass, church, a lawn chair in a peaceful yard where flowers are budding, a scripture passage, a relationship with someone in whom you can confide and trust, and a parish family who continues to foster, like Saint Joseph the foster father of Jesus, a parish into a Holy Family where the presence of Jesus is welcomed, embraced, celebrated, and manifested in the charitable, compassionate way that people treat everyone as brothers and sisters in the family of God.

May I suggest you use this parable also to meditate on others whom this news about Monsignor McLoone has knocked down, wounded or injured? Who are they? The person in the pew in front of you; the person across the aisle; a family member; a friend in the parish; a neighbor; a parish employee; an IHM Sister in the Convent; Father Rossi; Father Donia; Father Mulranen; Archbishop Chaput; our Archdiocese; young adults . . . . During your meditation, pray for them. Ask Jesus the Good Samaritan to go to them. Perhaps, you might hear Jesus say to you, “Would you be a Good Samaritan and go to them so they will find in your concern for them an Inn of safekeeping?”

May I suggest that you use this parable also to meditate on Monsignor McLoone? See him as the traveler robbed, wounded, left lying on the road.

God has blessed me with inns of safekeeping in the uplifting celebrating of Mass in your beautiful Church and Chapel as well as in each and every person who patted me on the shoulder or shook my hand. Know that I pray that we be Good Samaritans to each other.

Sincerely,

W e e k l y L e t t e rW e e k l y L e t t e rW e e k l y L e t t e rW e e k l y L e t t e r

Perpetual Adoration If the Pope himself gave you a special invitation to visit him in the Vatican, this honor would be nothing in comparison to the honor and dignity that Jesus himself bestows upon you with the invitation of spending one hour with Him in the Blessed Sacrament. "The divine Eucharist bestows upon the Christian people the incomparable dignity." (Pope Paul VI, Mysterium Fidei)

If you have never visited our Adoration Chapel, please avail yourself of this special place that we are so lucky to have day and night at our parish. Do you already visit? Our chapel has a steady stream of visitors both day and night. However, there are many hours without a committed adorer, and almost all hours are in need of co-adorers.

Please prayerfully consider committing to an hour or sign up to be a co-adorer.

In today’s Gospel reading we hear Jesus referring to Himself as “the good shepherd.” His sheep know Him, trust Him, listen to Him and follow Him; having faith that no harm will come to them as long as they stay close to Him. We reaffirmed our faith in Christ when we renewed our baptismal promises at Easter.

As stewards of our relationship with Jesus Christ, are we, like the sheep, willing to listen to Jesus, trust Him, follow Him no matter the cost to our comfort?

C.Y.A.C.C. Spirit and Truth: Symbolism in John's Gospel

Are you a Catholic adult in your 20s and 30s? Join us this Wednesday, April 25. Our guest speaker , Matt Dunn explains how deciphering symbolism can help us understand Our Lord through the Gospel of John. In this talk, Matt will teach us many symbols John uses (for example, if John mentions water, a reader should interpret that passage in the context of Baptism), and also clues such as where to look for these symbols. We will meet at 7:30 p.m. at St. Agnes School

Cafeteria, West Chester. For more info, check us out on Facebook or at www.cyacc.org.
