READINGS for —SUNDAY 19th March 2017

The Lesson—Exodus 2: 1-10 The Old Testament reading is from the book of Exodus chapter 2 beginning to read at verse 1. Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, 2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. 4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river-bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. ‘This is one of the Hebrew babies,’ she said. 7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, ‘Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?’ 8 ‘Yes, go,’ she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother.

9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, ‘Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.’ So the woman took the baby and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she

took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, ‘I drew him out of the water.’

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God

The Epistle Reading — Colossians 3: 12-17

The New Testament Reading is from the letter of St Paul to the Colossians, Chapter 3, beginning to read at verse 12.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you

richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel–Luke 2: 33-35 Hear the Gospel of our Saviour Christ, according to Saint Luke , chapter 2, beginning to read at verse 33. Glory to you ,Lord Jesus Christ.

33 The child’s father and mother marvelled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: ‘This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in

Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many

hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
