Bulletin for December 2018
December, 2018
Dear Parish Family,
In the month of December, as we prepare for the solemnity of Christmas, we begin with two special occasions honoring our Blessed Mother. The Immaculate Conception is Saturday, December 8th which is a Holy Day of Obligation. We have a service Friday night at 5:30 PM and Saturday at 8:00 AM and 11:30 AM. We also will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Wednesday, December 12th with Mananitas and mass at 5:00 AM and 6:00 PM. This can be a wonderful way for us to prepare for the Christmas season.
As we begin this Advent Season, our parish is going to embark upon a journey together throughout the year, with the theme of Community. Last year, we focused on a path of wellness. Our goal this year is beginning to incorporate that new sense of wellness into our whole community. Our families, our parish, and our city can be a place filled with grace and the joy of unity in an often divided and unkind place. It begins now in Advent! Every week at mass, you will receive a small flyer which will contain some reflections and opportunities to help our parish community, our families, and our greater community. This Advent, let’s all travel to Bethlehem together, following the star that guides us and unites us in faith with Christ in a humble stable.
We will welcome in the new year on Monday, December 31st with prayers and Adoration beginning at 11:30 PM.
Wishing you and your families a blessed and holy Christmas.
Blessings,
The Month dedicated to the Immaculate Conception
St. Francis Parish News & Announcements
Anointing of the Sick
Offered each first Friday after the Noon Mass in the Church. Next anointing offered will be
Friday, December 7th, 2018.
From the desk of Heidi Scott, Director of Music and Liturgy
Why We Do What We Do
As tradition, our gift to you this Advent Season is a resource for reflections and activities your family can do together to deepen the
vitality of Advent. This year, we will have available for you a weekly flyer that will outline the theme and thought for the week. As we
embark upon a new liturgical year, as well as the theme of Community, we would like to invite you to participate together both
as a family and a greater Church-family in several Advent Traditions. We will offer you a 4-week series of individual reflections on the
themes of Advent: hope, peace, joy, and love. Also included will be some suggestions of Advent activities you can do
as a family for your community. The real power of Advent is the seasons ability to awaken a sense of
longing and a sense of excitement. When we experience this, we rediscover how much we need the birth of our Savior- not only in our own personal lives, but in the lives of our community, and the world. During Advent, we embark upon a journey with Christ and join our
lives to his. Each year as our faith grows, we relearn how to be patient in waiting. To be unified with each other as a community of
faith, we need to be present to each other, keeping in mind that living well in the present will lead us to the fullness of life.
It is while waiting for the coming of the Reign of God, Advent after Advent, that we come to the realization that its arrival depends on us.
Our actions will either hasten or slow, sharpen or dim our own commitment to do our part to effectuate it.
Waiting — that cold, dry period of life when nothing seems to be enough and something else beckons within us — is the grace that
Advent raises in us. It stands before us, within us, pointing to the star for which the wise ones from the East are only icons of ourselves. We all want something more. Advent asks the questions: Are you
living your life in the present? How? Which star are you following now? And where is that star leading you?
