DEVELOPMENT REPORT UPDATE By Michelle Serna, Fundraising Associate

Among our many wonderful donors to the Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation in October, we are pleased to recognize Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hallada and Valero Energy Foundation for providing gifts of $10,000 or more! You may access the Development Report online by clicking on the link below, https://www.blueskiesoftexas.org/giving/. Scroll down to click on the “View Development Report” button. If you prefer a printed copy, please call the Development office at 210-568-3211. The Development Report will be updated on a quarterly basis beginning in January 2020. We are grateful to all our donors who provided generous support.

EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION FUND By BST East Resident Council

It has been a long-standing tradition for Blue Skies residents to express an additional “Thank You” through the Employee Appreciation Fund. As was previously announced, your gifts now qualify as donations to the Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation, and as such, will be included in your annual statement of donations. You can participate by placing a check (please use checks instead of cash) into the slot marked “Employee Appreciation Fund” at the Front Desk or by making arrangements with Finance for a specific amount to be added to your Monthly Service Statement. These funds are distributed twice a year (June and December) to all qualifying hourly-paid employees (with the exception of the Beauty Salon employees – the only employees allowed to receive tips). Your check must be received at the Front Desk no later than

Friday, Nov 29, by 5pm. Checks should be made payable to Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation and marked for Employees’ Appreciation Fund. Thank you.

SPECIAL NOTE: In addition to those individuals you see every day, such as the wait staff, housekeepers and custodians, and Front Desk/Courtesy Officer and Maintenance teams, we’ve been asked: “Who are some of the behind-the-scenes folks our Appreciation Fund reaches?” Here is a sampling (not all inclusive): dishwashers, finance clerks, overnight Front Desk and Courtesy Officer teams, overnight shift nursing and assisted living teams, cooks, etc.

BATTLE AT MIDWAY: THE TRUE STORY By Shirley Clay

On Monday, Nov 11 at 8pm & 11pm, and Wednesday, Nov 13 at 10am, the Smithsonian channel will feature the Battle of Midway: The true Story, which features former BST East resident “Dusty” Kleiss. It’s June 1942 and the world’s fate is about to be decided by a handful of pilots and their untested aircraft. Experience an

inside look at the Battle of Midway, captured through rarely seen battle footage and first-hand accounts from one of its hero dive-bombing pilots, “Dusty” Kleiss. This is an hour-by-hour recount of one of the most pivotal conflicts of the 20th century. Take a closer look at how this desperately needed victory came about through the design of U. S. airplanes, the skill of the pilots, the element of surprise, and the stroke of luck. THE RED FIDDLER PERFORMANCE By Ginny Hallager

Many thanks to all who supported the special concert on Friday, Oct 25, with Gabriel Wheaton, “The Red Fiddler.” You witnessed the extraordinary talent of a young musician whose future is secure in the music world. You won’t see his unique twist that melds electronics and classical violin, now a “fiddle,” anywhere else. You definitely will see him back at Blue Skies. Thank you for your comments and ideas for future performances. It’s all about networking; and you are the best at that. Thank you from a proud

(great) Aunt and (great) Uncle.

RESIDENTS’ CONCERT SERIES By Ginny Hallager

Once again on a crisp October afternoon we were lifted out of our seats by the thrilling performance of Sasha Moutouszkine on piano. Our “adopted” son continues to mature and bring a passion to his performance that leaves us breathless, as I am sure he is as well, with the power he uses to bring to life the various selections. He completely changed his program at the last minute due to his wife Chloe’s unplanned absence. There were many recognizable themes from our years of listening to classical music. The most spectacular part of the program was “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky. Sasha

explained what each of the 12 pictures was, and then had each section introduced as it began, so we could follow along. We were on our feet as we called him back time and again to thank him for sharing his incredible talent. Kudos, to the Concert Committee for their efforts in bringing us such outstanding performers. Our final concert of 2019 will be on Sunday, Dec 1, at 3pm. Illumen, a men’s chorus, will be returning to us to start the Holiday Season.

ARMY LUNCHEON By Ian “Red” Natkin

An informal no-host luncheon, for all Blue Skies East and West Army veterans, is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov 6, at 12pm in the Roadrunner Lounge at Blue Skies West.
