I hope you all enjoyed your Winter Break – all of us on the Fromm Administrative Team enjoyed ours. I was fortunate enough to enjoy a quick trip to Mexico City before heading to Los Angeles to celebrate Christmas and ring in the New Year with family. However, after that whirlwind, I was more than ready to return home on January 1, and back to the Fromm Institute on January 2. Before we closed the office for the Winter Holidays, all of us here at the Fromm Institute remained busy enrolling nearly 1,250 of you in nearly 30 course offerings – something that is sure to make for an engaging and exciting Winter 2019 Session. Much of our work is intended to entice you to enroll in the academic program we offer, but we also know that the community created by our students, faculty and staff is one of the principal benefits all who are touched by the Fromm Institute share. It is my hope that the camaraderie you encounter during the next eight weeks, as well the courses you take, continue the tradition that has made the Fromm Institute a San Francisco “original” serving hundreds of older students each day, with thousands of retired people among its lifelong learning student body and alumni. Talk about community! You are now, for the first time or once again, part of a great one. From all of us here on the Fromm Team, WELCOME to the 122 new students anticipating a new adventure, and WELCOME BACK to the 1,234 of you undertaking another new expedition. We are thrilled that you are here!! - Derek S. MAKE LISTENING EASYHaving trouble hearing our lectures? Try a Sennheiser headset or, for those with compatible hearing aids, a T-Coilheadset. These hearing enhancement tools are available outside or in the Fromm Institute Office before each class.Leave your USF ID card (required for the privilege) and let our headsets make your listening, and learning, easier.

Many of you already have ID cards and frequently use the library or go to other eventsand facilities on campus where an ID card is needed. The University now requires anewer version of card which has an invisible ‘chip’ in the magstripe. If you have a cardthat looks like the image here (at right), we ask that you request a new one.

To get an updated ID card:

•Let the Fromm Office know you need the updated card, and we will request one for you. It will be available to pick up during the third week of classes.

•If you want one immediately, go to the OneCard office at Lone Mountain.

•Or request an ID card through USFs website, where you can upload a new photo on your own.Instructions can be found on a flyer in the office.

LIBRARY SECURITY & YOUR ID MAY NEED TO BE UPDATED

Duplicated Materials for each class will be emailed to you 3 – 5 days prior to each classmeeting, and will also be posted on our website at: http://fromm.usfca.edu/course-materials.html We will print aminimal number of materials and have them available in the office for those members who do not have emailaccounts. Please make sure to keep us updated with your correct email and any class changes you make so we canbe sure to keep you apprised of all your class announcements and handouts.

“FROMM FOCUS” IS YOUR NEWSLETTER ALL SESSION LONGThis newsletter, the “Focus,” as it’s called by many a Frommie, is published five times each session and availablein and around Fromm Hall with a fresh issue as Week One (01/07), Two (o1/14), Four (01/28), Six (02/11) and Eight(02/25) begin. Always a good read, it’s brimming with info on what’s happening throughout the Fromm Instituteprogram. Of particular interest, and always very popular, is Issue #4, published on Feb. 11. Why? It offers a preview of the courses scheduled for the Spring of 2019 and identifies when you’ll be able to register for them. Read your “Focus” and stay on top of things at the Fromm Institute.
