A word from the Lady

Hello “Frugal” Readers!

I cannot express how psyched I am to finally get the first issue of The Frugal Flyer printed and in the hands of the public! I came up with the idea of The Frugal Flyer in hopes that all the helpful information inside it will help others as much as it has helped, and continues to help, me and my family in life! I thank my advertisers for helping me get this off the ground, and I also thank you, the read-ers, for picking this publication up and reading it! I am always open to questions, comments, concerns, and even constructive criticism. Please feel free to contact me at 251-767-9946 or email me at: [email protected]. Again, thanks for reading, and please: look for another issue next month!

For Your Electric Bill... Use CFL’s in place of regular incandescent lightbulbs. These energy-saving bulbs use less electricity to produce the same amount of light, AND they don’t burn out as often.

Unplug things you are not using. Appliances and electronics suck up energy even when they are not turned on. Cell phone chargers use energy too even when your phone is not plugged into the other end!

For Your Water Bill... Use less water with every flush by placing a jug or bottle filled with water in your toilet tank. The jug or bottle takes up space in the tank, so it cannot refill with as much water!

Consolidate your cleaning. One large load of laundry takes less water then two medium or small loads. Same goes for the dishwasher.

For Your Grocery Bill... Use Coupons! Especially if it is for some thing that you were going to buy regardless. Alot of stores will let you stack coupons as well!

Buy in Bulk! Many items, such as meats, are cheaper by the pound if purchased in bulk. So if you have a deep freezer, here’s all the more reason to stock it up!

For Your Vehicle... Switch to an aftermarket, reuseable airfilter. Not only do you not have to replace it as often, but it also will give you better gas mile age!

When replacing ANY parts, buy aftermarket. Most of these parts are cheaper then factory parts and they promote better performance!

Vehicles get better gas mileage when they have more then 1/2 a tank of gas. So it may cost you more when you fill up, but you won’t be filling up as much!

There are so many scams out there, that it isalmost impossible to believe there are actuallylegitimate ways to make money from home. Wehave weeded through the scams and “get richquick schemes” and came up with a list of realways to make some extra money from home. For the Kids... When you go out to eat, keep the crayons that came with the kids’ menus, and avoid spending so much money on Crayola.

When it comes to crafts, try using things you already have laying around the house such as empty paper towel rolls, old magazines, and spare beads or buttons.

Around The House... Instead of buying tupperware, wash and reuse plastic food containers such as butter tubs or cottage cheese containers.

Don’t throw away those Wal-Mart bags yet! Use them as trash bags for the small can in your bedroom or bathroom! Or, you can take them back to Wal-Mart, and they will recycle them for you!

Plastic hairspray bottles, after being washed and rinsed out, make great misters for your indoor and outdoor plants!

Prescription Savings TipsOTC medications...

Name brands sometimesare best, but if you read thelabels, you will see that alot

of “generic” or “storebrand” medications have

most, if not ALL, of theexact sameingredients,

and amounts ofthem, as the name

brand. So, this meansfrom Tylenol to Prevacid,

Cold Meds to Vitamins, you could be saving a TON of cash! Just read the label! Of course, if you are worried

about a certain variation of a product, talk to your phar-macist, they can research drug interactions and such if

you are on prescription medications, ect...

FREE Prescription Savings Cards & Coupons... Online there are many different web-sites that will either: send you a card or direct you to one that you can print out and take to your pharmacy! Be advised some medications do not get as large of a discount as others. Some give only a discount of a few dollars, and others save 50% to 75%. If its free, then try it right? Here are some websites that provide pre-scription savings cards and coupons for FREE!

I use dryer sheets with each load of laundry, after each load I save the gently used sheets, putting them in a zip lock bag.I use 2 saved sheets when drying towels and bed linens,they come out soft and smell great.After towels & linens (2nd use) use them to dust your computer screens & TV screens (3rd use), then toss. Instead of buying expensive dusting sheets, I use 2 dryer sheets, just wrap them around your Swiffer Duster (overlapping in the center)use and then toss.

One of favorite uses for saved dryer sheets is to use them for dusting furniture, picks dust up like a magnet.It’s a big $ saver!!!

Do-It-YourselfCOST BREAKDOWN & SAVINGS

Prior to making our own, we were using Arm & Hammer liquid detergent. Here is the breakdown in cost analy-sis:

(**note** you only need to use 1 tablespoon of this homemade detergent per load, although you can use 1 – 2 scoops for heavily soiled loads)

* Arm & Hammer® liquid 100 ounce detergent – $6.79 – 32 loads = $0.21 per load * Tide® with Bleach powder 267 ounce detergent – $20.32 – 95 loads = $0.21 per load

* Jabs Homemade powder 32 ounce detergent – $2.98 – 64 loads = $0.05 per load

As you can see, whether I compare against traditional store bought liquid or powder, I am saving $0.16 per load!

There are also many other benefits of homemade products aside from cost savings.SIMPLE INGREDIENTS

I purchased all these ingredients at my local grocery store:

* 1 – 55 ounce box of Arm & Hammer® Super Washing Soda = $3.99 * 1 – 76 ounce box of 20 Mule Team® Borax = $4.99

* 1 – 10 pack of 4.5 ounce bars of Ivory® Bar Soap (**note** you can use cheaper soap, I actually had this on hand already. Use whatever tickles your fancy – Other brands of commonly used bar soaps include Pure & Natural®, Fels-Naptha® and/or ZOTE®. Both ZOTE® and Fels-Naptha® are made for and sold as

“laundry bar soap.”)

All items were found in the laundry isle.A SIMPLE RECIPE

Each batch yields approximately 32 ounces (between 32-64 loads based on how many Tbsp used per load).

* 1 bar of shaved bar soap (Ivory, ZOTE, Fels-Naptha) * 1 cup of borax

* 1 cup of washing soda

Thoroughly stir together for 5 minutes and enjoy the results! That’s it folks…seems too good to be true, but it is true indeed!

Regarding High Efficiency (HE) Front-Load Washers:

You may have been told you need to use “special soap” for your HE front-load washing machine. Let me enlighten you as to why. HE front-load washers require “special soap” for one reason and one reason alone…low suds; because they use less water, they require soap that is less sudsy. The good news is, the homemade

detergent in this recipe is VERY low suds. Just make sure you use the recommended amount of detergent.

The HE designation is just another advertising mechanism the industry is using to try & swindle consumers into buying “special soap” that they charge unnecessarily exorbitant prices for.
