- A viper is a small, poisonous desert snake very familiar to John the Baptist.

- Vipers are so deceitful.  It looked like a dead branch or a little stick and it would stay still waiting for the kill.

Page 9: The fruits of true repentance part 1

- John the Baptist calls them offspring of vipers or children of Satan the deceiver who appears to be harmless but are in fact venomous

- “Who hath warned thee of the wrath to come” speaks about the coming wrath of God upon those who are pretending to be Christians

Page 10: The fruits of true repentance part 1

- Jesus had a similar rebuke to the Pharisees in Mathew 23:23

Matthew 23:23 (NLT)

23 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens,[a] but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.

Genuine Salvation = Repentance + Faith

Proof of real repentance = “Fruits worthy of repentance”

Luke 3: 7 -14

“7Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

Page 13: The fruits of true repentance part 1

11He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

12Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages“

Page 14: The fruits of true repentance part 1

The Jews are no stranger to repentance in fact in Isaiah chapter 1: 16 it says

“"Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean, put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes, cease to do evil, learn to do well, seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow."

Page 15: The fruits of true repentance part 1

However John believes they would not respond to the invitation to repent so he rebuked their reliance upon their being children of Abraham.

”9 and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
