• WCRP Grand Challenges and the role for CLIVAR

• What should they be?o How do they relate to existing CLIVAR Research

Challenges/Imperativeso Preliminary discussion at SSG-18; panel input and good

Important oceanic physical processes

For the on-going changes of green ocean, a number of physical processes are important:– ocean vertical and horizontal mixing associated

with the mixed layer– horizontal and vertical advection due to sub-

mesoscale and meso-scale phenomena– the transports of jets, striations and currents– water mass formation and ventilation– air-sea interaction over SST fronts and eddies

Page 14: The Future CLIVAR & Collaboration with PICES

• Co-sponsored POC Topic Session, PICES-2012:“Challenges in understanding Northern

Hemisphere ocean climate variability and change”

• Joint workshop between the PICES and the CLIVAR Pacific Panel has been proposed by co-chairs of working group 27 to POC.– June 2013 (Li Jiang, Nun Nan province, China)

Pacific Panel: Strengthen links and develop activities with PICES and other “green” programmes
