… where Pervasive meets Social…

The vision of SOCIETIES is to develop a complete integrated solution via a Pervasive Community and Cooperating Smart Space which extends pervasive systems beyond the individual to dynamic communities of users.

Our research will embrace online community services, such as Social Networking, and thus offer new and powerful ways of working, communicating and socialising.

… where Pervasive meets Social…

Page 10: The Future Internet: Pushing the Technology Boundaries: PERSIST/SOCIETIES (Kevin Doolin) :: SESERV Workshop

• To facilitate the creation, organisation, management and communication of pervasive communities via Cooperating Smart Spaces, where pervasive computing is integrated with social computing communities;

• To provide an enhanced user experience - both for individuals and entire user communities - based on proactive smart space behaviour and dynamic sharing of community resources across geographic boundaries;

• To design and prototype a robust open and scalable system for self-orchestrating Pervasive Communities;

• To evaluate, through strong involvement of end-users, the usefulness and acceptance of the developed software/framework via three user trials.

SOCIETIES Overview Four Key Objectives

Finding, connecting, organising…

Page 11: The Future Internet: Pushing the Technology Boundaries: PERSIST/SOCIETIES (Kevin Doolin) :: SESERV Workshop

State of the art (1)

• Pervasive Computing– Progression from single to multi user– User-led discovery and composition

• Social Computing– SNS as a context source– Dynamic Community formation– Pervasive Community / SNS service

orchestration

Page 12: The Future Internet: Pushing the Technology Boundaries: PERSIST/SOCIETIES (Kevin Doolin) :: SESERV Workshop

State of the art (2)

• Context Awareness– Community context modelling– Sharing communal resources– Intra- Inter-community context sharing

• Personalisation– Learning and inference– Combining with Context – Orchestration of system behaviour based on

preferences

SOCIETIES Key Innovations

• Resource sharing in dynamic communities

• Relationship/behaviour discovery

• Orchestration of multiple communities

• Proactive information exchange

• Intelligent information usage

• Intelligent conflict resolution

.. What next?

• Continuing the research…• Merging pervasive computing with social networks• This raises challenges such as

– Federation across multiple SNS– Privacy protection– Dynamic SNS formation, dynamic community / user group

formation– SNS as an enabler

• Single sign on, one provider• User profile providers (address, credit card, avatar)• Service announcements / broadcast across SNS• Real world event dissemination• SNS as a context source• SNS reacting to context changes
