A 18 Island Moon June 27, 2013 Lisabellas Bistro & Bar Celebrating Coastal Cuisine 361-749-4222 Open Monday - Saturday at 5:00 pm Casual Dining at it’s Finest Nightly Seafood Specials By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Extras needed for video shoot… Rusty Hicks, publisher of Steam Magazine called me this week and asked me give him a plug. It seems that they are filming a music video for the Dallas band, Burning Slow, at Sharkey’s in Port A on Tuesday, July 2 nd from noon until 5, and need extras. It’s an “all ages” event, though minors must be escorted by their parents. It’s free and for those over 21, the bar will be open. If you need more info than that, email Rusty at rusty@rustyhicksentertainment. com. Tommy Alverson & J.T. Coldfire… It was a busy weekend on our little island… busy and hot. The good news is that all the live music shows that I went to were very well attended. On Friday (the 21 st ) the great Tommy Alverson (Ft. Worth, TX) brought his big country band, complete with fiddle and pedal steel players, to the Back Porch and local blues fave, J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX) played Giggity’s. Coldfire is developing quite a strong following over there and will continue once a month. That’s good news! The incredible Shelley King… On Saturday, the amazing Shelley King played a solo show at Shorty’s. I have been an admirer of King since she first started showing up in the Austin music scene. She has one of the strongest voices I’ve ever been witness to and let me qualify that by saying, I once represented two of the strongest female voices ever, Tracy Nelson and Lavelle White. When Shelley King sings blues, gospel, country, soul or the phone book, she does it with the passion and fervor of a woman possessed. In 2008 King became the first woman to hold the title of Official Texas State Musician and she has shared stages with scores of noted performers (including such top acts as Patty Griffin, Los Lonely Boys, The Flatlanders, Mavis Staples, Ricky Skaggs and others). Her show at Shorty’s was testimony to the fact that she can make a church bell blush. She showed up by herself, set up her PA and proceeded to belt out three straight hours of hair-raising original tunes. It was a sight to behold. She’ll be back to Shorty’s in August and best believe I’ll let you know when. Gary P. Nunn, Shake Russell, Michael Hearne… Saturday a friend of a friend was having her 50 th birthday party at the Community Center in Port A and had hired Shake Russell (Houston, TX) and Michael Hearne (Taos, NM) to perform. Having just seen their show last November at the Third Coast Theater, I reluctantly decided to forego the birthday bash and instead divide my night between Shelley King at Shorty’s, Aloha Dave and the Tourists at Giggity’s, and Gary P. Nunn at the Back Porch. But luckily my timing was perfect because just after I got to the Porch Shake and Michael wandered in. They were immediately invited to sit in with Nunn and glorious it was. Nunn actually covers a few of Shake’s songs, so it was extra special when Shake got up and took the lead on “The Girl Just Has To Dance” and “Together We’re One, Divided We’re Through,” while Nunn chimed in on harmonies. Everyone joined in (audience included) as Nunn crowned the evening with his “London Homesick Blues” with the unforgettable chorus that kicks off every Austin City Limits show…“I wanna go home with the Armadillo…” To call this moment special is a severe understatement. Trust me… you should have been there dancing with us under the super moon. Ruben Limas and Pete Denny… On Sunday, I braved the heat and went by the Back Porch to catch Ruben Limas’ late afternoon show. I’ve only recently acquainted myself with Mr. Limas and am quite impressed with the guy. He has been showing up at the Island Moon’s monthly Art Walk on Padre Island with the always lively, Stevie Start, as well as playing frequent gigs around the islands. Limas even sings the National Anthem at the Hook’s games on occasion. His enthusiasm and energy are infectious and I really think he’s good. Check him out if you get a chance. He plays every few weeks at the Sunday afternoon gig at the Back Porch and will be at Shorty’s this Saturday night. Also on Sunday, I went by the Tarpon Ice House to catch the weekly Open Jam hosted by Uel Jackson. Billy Snipes was on stage with Uel and Pete Denny, an impressive blues artist from the Frio River area. These three guys were really nailing it. Pete will be playing with his band at Shorty’s in August. The Open Jam at the Ice House has started to take on more of big blues band groove these days, but whatever the groove, it’s always entertaining. DO NOT MISS LIST This is a PARTY, PARTY WEEKEND!!! On Thursday, June 27 th , the always lively jump blues of Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys (Austin, TX) will take the Back Porch stage. That’s always a great show. On Friday, June 28 th , Six Market Blvd. (Stephenville, TX) will bring their polished Americana program to the Porch, Billy Snipes will play Shorty’s, Ray T and the City Crew (Aransas Pass, TX) will play their weekly Flat’s gig and the incomparable Miss Neesie will play Giggity’s with her scaled down acoustic version of the rowdy roots rocking blues, gospel and zydeco band, the Earfood Orchestra (San Antonio, TX) called the Tin Can Trio, so named for the resonators in their instruments. The “Trio” is actually a quartet made up of the Earfood nucleus: Miss Neesie on vocals and frottoir (also Zydeco rub-board or scrub board), Jim Beal on bass and banter, Allen Elsasser on guitar and vocals and Ollie Morris on drums and vocals. These guys have been playing Port A since the days of Tortuga Flats and pretty much demand that you rise to their occasion. This will be one guaranteed party where everyone gets into the act. DO NOT MISS!!! On Saturday, June 29 th , Three Way Street will be at Giggity’s, blues rocker Ruben V (San Antonio, TX) will be at Dr. Rockits, Uel Jackson will be at Fins, Stevie Start will be the Coast Club and the international king of Tex- Mex, Joe King Carrasco will be at the Back Porch. Joe King will be playing with his Texas Tornado rhythm section known as El Molino: Ernie Durawa on drums and Speedy Sparks on bass. They have recently release a new CD entitled, “Tlaquepaque”. This particular band backing Joe goes back to the mid-70’s in Austin when he released his hits, Party Weekend and Buena. Joe now lives in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and continues to record and tour year round. He has played the Back Porch once a year for many years and this is definitely the show to catch this weekend. I NEVER miss a chance to see Joe King play. NEVER EVER. ¡Ay Ay Ay, Hoy, Hoy, Hoy! And that’s the truth! Carol Elliot Fri.
