T A M I, The Art of Mental Illness, is an artgallery in development, being establishedfor the exhibition of all forms of art bypeople who deal with mental illnessdaily.

The gallery is managed by founder andcurator, Danny Noyes, whose real lifepersona has suffered with BipolarAffective Disorder with Suicidal Ideationfor over a decade. Being a resident ofSecond Life since 2006, I have becomeaware of the value that this place canbring, in gathering people from all overthe world with like minds, even if theycan be, a little unstable at times .

My real life persona has found thatpeople with such conditions have talentsthat so often go unrecognised.Sometimes, because of the stigma andmisunderstanding these diseases havewithin our communities, others, because

of the extremely poor self esteem oroutrageously high expectations. Such isthe manner of some disorders.

Using second life and creating asupportive community around thisgallery, will I’m sure, build anunderstanding, that all of us in the mentalhealth community, carers and affected, should look forward too .This Gallery thenis established with this objective. Toprovide an outlet within second life toexhibit, discuss and support, residentswith artistic passion who suffer withmental health issues .To exhibit all formsof the arts at no cost to the artist .To onlyhave original work that may be solddirectly through the artist .To encourageartists to provide links and information totheir real world art for proper exposure. To seek support from benefactors toimprove the real life exposure of theartists with mental health issues .The Artof Mental Illness – Art gallery Is for all ofus who feel safe in Second Life livingwith these retched conditions. For moreinformation please visit the info desk atthe gallery.

So What is The Art OfMental I l lness?

The Art of Mental Illness is a non-profit organisation, providing what wesee as a community service to thoseof us in Second Life with artisticability and mental health issues.Funding will primarily be provided inthe first instance by Danny Noyes theCurator and founder of the gallery. We will be seeking patrons andbenefactors to provide fundingthrough donations and a volunteersales team will be sought soon. Amagazine will be published for thegallery highlighting events andindividual artists and subscriptionswill be sought all over Second Life. It’s envisaged that the moresubscribers to the magazine thebetter opportunity we have of sellingadvertising thus contributing to thefunding of the gallery. The formulationof a fund for artists to help with theuploading of work is being workedthrough at the moment. This fundwould be accessed by the artistthrough application. Here is an outline of what the galleryhopes to achieve.

Web SitesFor those who do not have a webpresence, we can provide that at nocost to the artist. A registered domainname (www.mysite.com) is all that isneeded by the artist. Domain NameProviders are usually low cost, between five and ten US dollars. Most require you to pay for two yearsin advance. The art of Mental Illnessdomain name is a .au name andcost a little more. However, for twoyears it was twenty-four dollars, stillvery affordable. We have our domainname registered with Crazy Domains.(The gallery or anyone involved withthe gallery has no affiliation withCrazy Domains). We will host thedomain and point it towards a sitethat enables you to sell your work. The site is called redbubble.com andthese folks are great. I have a sitethere and you can see it atcallaghanart.com.au. You upload yourfinished image put a price on it andthey will frame pack and ship it towhoever purchases the item. Theyalso do Tee Shirts. up you put on the item into yourbank account or PayPal account. So,whenever someone types inwww.mysite.com it directs to theredbubble site. Check out my site bytyping in the search barwww .callaghanart.com.auThe aim of the gallery is to giveartists who have a mental healthissue a boost in second life to selltheir real life art from their own website. We are able to host manydomains, however there will be basiccriteria. Email Danny for furtherinformation.ExhibitsThe Art of Mental Illness - Art Gallery,is quite large stretching over threelevels. A large audio visual display ison the third level with seating. This isideal for any artist using multimediaor machinima to display their work.Display cubes and frames aresupplied by the gallery and eachartist will have an information plaquewith a photograph of the artist, a bioof the artist, a description of the workexhibited and a “touch for web page”script to their web site. There is an

area set aside as a “coffee shop” andsculptures are encouraged for thisarea. Indeed, sculptures areencouraged for all areas. We havestill, a good prim limit however eachexhibit will have to be assessed as tothe prim count and how it effects theoperation, as a whole, of the gallery. The work on display at the momentis mine and is used to give you anexample of what to expect.CostApart from the cost of the domainname by the artist which is onlyrequired if the artists wants a real lifeweb presence, there is no cost to theartist for exhibiting. The artist mayprice their work in lindens atwhatever the artist deemsappropriate.

The following is from Danny Noyesreal life persona.

“Second Life has been morebeneficial to me over the past eightmonths, than any real life situation(apart from meds). The support frompeople all over the world hasinspired me to start this gallery. Somuch so, that I have begun toreplicate the gallery in real life usingthe same principles and goals. Ihave Bipolar Affective Disorder withSuicidal Ideation. I am fifty threeyears old. I was diagnosed inSeptember 2010, however, I havehad this condition for fourteen years.During those fourteen years I had nomedication, no support, nodiagnosis and no knowledge. TodayI can see a future. I don’t know whatit will bring but at least I know thereis a tomorrow. Use this place, it’syours. I am just here to help.”

Bipolar & MeditationAlthough not yet scientifically proven, for all those suffering from thevarying forms of bipolar, meditationdoes appear to be offering immensepractical benefits to many areas oftheir lives. Some have suggested thatduring meditation, the state ofdepression prior to meditation isgreatly reduced and a more definitefeeling of well being is observed. Theeffects in some cases are said tohave lingered for a few hours afterpractice. Feelings of considerablyless irritable thoughts and a drasticboost in confidence have beennoted by many Bipolar sufferers.Bipolar disorder, also known as a"manic-depressive illness" or "manicdepression", is treated with a rangeof various medications, in somecases hospitalisation and vitamins.

Many people suffering from bipolarpractice meditation as an extremelyeffective complementary therapy.Since bipolar is a very complex mooddisorder characterized by dramaticmood swings, it is always highlyrecommended to consult a doctor orprofessional beforehand. This isadvisable, so that both patient and

doctor can monitor anyimprovements accordingly. Keeping alog is well worth consideration inorder to notice any new patterns orchanges that are noticed. Some people have even stated that ofall the various types of medicationand vitamins promoted as treatmentsfor bipolar, by far the most effectivehas been meditation. There are ofcourse many different techniquespractised, those of which somemethods may be effective and somemay not. Guided group meditationtends to be a preferred method of

meditating for Bipolar sufferers. Itwould make sense that thosepracticing as a group will have moreconfidence and lesser anxiousthoughts when surrounded by likeminded people, hence a much moresupportive and ambient atmosphere.

There will, I am very sure, be variousmeditation techniques offeringdiverse benefits to all different people, however the most important thing toremember is the fundamentalpurpose of every single technique isthat Meditation put simply is anapproach that anyone (bipolarsufferer or not) can use to help themcope with medical problems, stress, and anxiety by way of thought, contemplation, and reflection.

As mentioned earlier though, I mustemphasise the importance of seekingprofessional advice and guidance ifyou do suffer from any of thesedisorders.

The gallery has on its parcel a yogaretreat, meditation and relaxationarea operated by Loulane Perl. Thegallery encourages all artists andtheir carers to join her group and

participate. Support groups andmeetings are also held in the retreatarea. Loulane is deeply involved inBipolar disorder being a carer for aloved one. She is very supportive andgives great insight to the responsessome of our family members andothers have towards bipolar sufferers. To be able to get an idea of how wesometimes affect the lives of thosearound us, contributes to theunderstanding of the condition as awhole.

Artist Profile of the MonthSL Name: Danny Noyes

Age: 53 (rl)

Country of Origin: Australia

People You Admire: Vincent Van

Gogh, Stephen Fry

Looking over your web site, it seems to be a

mixture of different styles. What inspires you?

Every artist gets asked this question. My work is what I

feel. Some people write thoughts in a journal or blog. I

need to express my thoughts with a graphics tablet and

stylus. Its emotions that ‘inspire’ me. And I guess its a

way for me to work out what the hell is going on in my

mind at certain times.

How long have you had Bipolar?

They tell me four about 14 years. But I was diagnosed

in September 2010. Prior to that I just thought the

irrational swings etc etc was just the way it was. It

wasn’t until I kept getting these overwhelming desires

to suicide, that, in a rational moment, I went and saw

about it.

At the Gallery there are three pictures of a green,

bald headed man. Is that you?

Ha, Yes that's me. I took those shots whilst I was in an

episode and they belong in a series called The Black

Dog. A euphemism for depression in Australia. And I’m

not really bald by the way.
