JN Port lowers charges to attract customers
Jawaharlal Nehru Port, the largest container handling
port, which has lowered charges to attract more traffic,
has also been able to strike a balance between imports and
exports. “Historically, this was a port for imports, where
65 per cent used to be imports. The recent trend shows
that 51.5 per cent are imports, and remaining 48 per cent
are exports, which reflects that imbalance is being
reduced,” Neeraj Bansal, Deputy Chairman, JN Port, told.

India tightens rules for foreign ships to ply on
local routes
State-runs firms have been vested with powers to scrap
contracts awarded to fleet owners on the basis of Indian
registered ships offered by them under a local rule if they
convert their ships into foreign flag before the tenure
ends, the country’s maritime administration has said. The
so-called right of first refusal or RoFR allows fleet owners
to take the benefit available to Indian registered ships for
doing business along the Indian coast. READ MORE
Indian Logistics Industry to Experience Higher
Investments with the Passing of Industry Tax
Reforms
The Government of India’s emphasis on manufacturing
and initiatives such as “Make in India” is boosting
domestic production, which is bolstering the logistics
industry. Logistics companies are making concerted
efforts to keep pace with this growth in demand by
digitizing their solutions and offering online freight
services, according to a Frost and Sullivan Study. These
services will provide visibility across the supply chain
and transform it into an organized industry.

Exporters facing difficulties in GST transition
period: EEPC
Engineering exporters’ body EEPC India today said that
shipping companies are facing difficulties post GST as
their drawback refunds will not be released till
September-end or October. Moreover, the supplies of
goods to the export-oriented units from the domestic tariff
area are not considered as “deemed exports” under the
Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, resulting in denial
of duty free imports of inputs under the ‘Advance
Authorisation’ scheme of the government, the exporters’
body said in a statement.

Experts divided over privatisation of Dredging
Corporation
The Cabinet is set to take a call on privatising Dredging
Corporation of India (DCI) but opinion is split on the
value proposition that could accrue to the buyer in the
domestic dredging market where foreign firms have
started winning large contracts though the business is
reserved for Indian ships according to local laws.

Exports slowdown
The Commerce Ministry last week came out with export
figures for the month of July. The data shows that our
overseas shipments rose for the 11th consecutive month,
recording a growth of 3.9 percent over a year ago. That
all sounds good, at least until we look at the export figures
for the last few months. Exports growth stood at 27.6
percent in March, 19.8 percent in April, 8.3 percent in
May and 4.3 percent in June. So, there has clearly been a
loss in momentum, which needs to be addressed as a top
priority. READ MORE
