Recent Events:

The Big Irish Fair LAPES Membership News:

The first ever Big Irish Fair held in Long Beach was a great success according to Emerald Society mem-bers Terry Andersen and Griffin Healy. Terry is the President and Griffin a director with the fair. They have been putting this fair on for 32 years in the LA-OC area. Two of our

Los Angeles Police Emerald Society mem-bers were honored at this year’s fair. Long Beach City Councilman Patrick O’Donnell was honored on Saturday and LAPES Charter member Chief Jim McDonnell was honored on Sunday. The Los Angeles Po-lice Emerald Society Pipes & Drums performed each day. We had

more members volunteer on Saturday and Sunday than we’ve ever had before. We needed the help. We all but sold out of all of our wares. It was a record setting recruitment weekend. We recruited more new members in one weekend, then in the last

three years combined, at all the various fairs. The weekend was a great success for our organization. We shared camaraderie with our fellow Em-erald Society members; show cased our Irish culture, Irish com-munity and our law enforcement community. It was a very posi-tive public relations experience with the community as a whole. Thank you to our volunteers, Mike Vela, Dennis and Erin Sullivan, Mark Guardado, Katie Bergman, Mike and Jean Head, Patrick Devine, Sean Magee, Paddy Eagan, Laura Patti, Michael Murphy, John McBride, Kristine Kiesling, Rene Escobedo, Sean Deaton, Ed Moscoso, John Garry, John Garry Sr., Jeff Litzinger, Ed O’Reilly,

Keith Mortensen, Tara Yeats, Erin Scott-Haines (McNulty School of Irish Dance), Ciaran Gallagher, and S. Megas. Thank you to our hosts Terry Ander-son and Griffin Healy. A special thank you, to past president, charter member, and founding member, Commander Bill Murphy for his assistance.

I attended Paddy Burke’s retirement party at the United Irish Cultural Center in San Francis-co. Paddy is a Cork, Ireland native. He was cofounder and past President of SFBALEES. He retired after pushing a black & white on the mean streets of San Francisco for 33 years. Past SFBALEES President’s and cofounders Val Kirwan (also a former CPOMF Board member), Mike Moran, and Joe McFadden were all on hand. San Francisco

Police Chief Gregory Suhr and SFPOA Presi-dent Marty Halloran were there. Emerald Society members from throughout Califor-nia attended. Representatives on behalf of Gerry Adams Sinn Fein’s were on hand. Irish Consul General Phil Grant and members representing AOH were all there. It was a who’s who of the Irish community on both sides of the ocean.

LAPES whiskey tasting & meeting was held in August at member owned Auld Dub-liner in Long Beach. Our host, owner David Copley went above and beyond

dishing out Irish hospitality. The meeting was very well attended. The whiskey tasting, even more so…

The 2014 Band fundraiser was a great success accord-ing to Michael Apodaca, President of LAPES P & D and Scott Walton former LAPES president and current Pipe major . I have attended this event since its inception 3 years ago. It improves each year. The LAPES board

bought a table to the event for the second year in a row. On a side note, the board responsibly took a limo to the event. On the way home the limo caught fire. Long night…
