We invite you to join our Society of Fellows and be at the heart of the Garden Conservancy’s activities! You’ll enjoy

opportunities for unique engagement

in our programs, as well as fellowship with

other supporters who share a commitment

to save and share outstanding American

gardens for the education and inspiration

of the public. In addition to affording you

opportunities to enjoy exclusive benefits,

your participation provides vital support for

the Garden Conservancy’s preservation and

education programs.

• Garden-Study Tours In recognition of their annual support, Fellows are eligible to join several customized garden-study tours especially created for the Fellows, and often by them. The tours showcase remarkable gardens and cultural highlights characteristic of the region.

• Garden Preservation The Garden Conservancy helps protect important gardens for future generations, celebrate the legacy of American designers, rehabilitate historic gardens, and preserve horticultural collections.

• Open Days Since 1995, Open Days has provided access to more than one million visitors in 41 states, opening the gates to beautiful private gardens not usually open to the public. It builds a nationwide community of gardeners teaching and inspiring each other. Fellows receive unlimited compli-mentary tickets to visit Open Days gardens.

• Education Our educational workshops and symposia provide thoughtful and engaging programs on issues related to the design, history, preservation, and cultural significance of gardens. Fellows have special access to intimate gatherings with featured speakers.

THE GARDEN CONSERVANCY

Society of Fellows 2019 Garden-Study Tours

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA May 12 – 16Fully subscribed, waiting list only

This tour celebrates the beautiful gardens that are artfully woven into Napa Valley’s world-famous agricultural landscape. From Yountville, we are following the valley primarily northward to Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena, visiting three esteemed wineries—with noteworthy gardens and architecture—and a wide array of private gardens, all of which enjoy meticulous and hands-on stewardship by their owners. Along the way, we are also exploring the work of talented local and nationally known landscape designers and architects.

HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK June 3 – 6Fully subscribed, waiting list only

The verdant hillsides of the Hudson Valley have inspired artists for more than two centuries and attracted landowners who created some of the first pleasure gardens in America. From Frank and Anne Cabot’s Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring, our itinerary takes us north toward the town of Hudson, chronicling how the romantic, naturalistic style of the early nineteenth century gave way to more formal Gilded Age gardens as we learn from the Vanderbilt estate, Blithewood, Boscobel, and Frederic Church’s Olana. We are also visiting beautiful private gardens in rural communities and viewing the work of contemporary artists and landscape designers.

BRANDYWINE VALLEY OF DELAWARE AND PENNSYLVANIA September 16 – 19

The Brandywine Valley is one of America’s centers of garden excellence, due in part to the leadership of du Pont family members. Our tour explores how their descendants and others are carrying on horticultural traditions and conservation at Mt. Cuba Center and at the historic estates of Longwood Gardens and Winterthur. From Wilmington, we are following the valley northward into Pennsylvania, stopping to meet private garden owners, including several Society of Fellows members.

LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE September 28 – October 4

Our international tour takes us to the Loire Valley—the birthplace of French landscape design—where Renaissance monarchs created magnificent residential châteaux and formal gardens. Our immersion in regional history and culture begins outside Paris with a visit to Château Vaux-le-Vicomte. It continues with insider tours of Chambord, Chenonceau, Villandry, Chaumont, Blois, and other iconic châteaux and gardens, plus intimate private properties where owners will be your hosts and guides. In this gastronomic mecca, we are dining at Michelin star restaurants and visit with notable artisans and producers, sampling and learning about the region’s renowned wine, chocolate, and cheese.

For the latest status of each tour, please visit the Fellows Portal on the Garden Conservancy website or call 845.424.6500 (M-F, 9-5 ET).
