Lemurs Written and Illustrated by Georgia Kelly, Grade 4

With its doglike snout, you may mistake a ring-tailed lemur for a member of the dog family. But if you saw it walking along the forest floor, tail high in the air, you could easily think of it as a type of cat. Think again! Lemurs are actually primates, like humans and the ape families. Read on to find out more!

Lemurs aren’t picky eaters. They like to eat fruit, but if this is scarce, lemurs will gladly eat young tender leaves, insects, bark, and berries. They prefer to eat their fruit directly from the plant’s branch, but if the fruit is big, lemurs will prick it off before eating.

Lemurs have a different call for every occasion. A soft yelp is used when looking for food, and a loud bark is made to report a threat. Every night before going to sleep, male

    2

lemurs make a loud hooting sound to tell other groups, “STAY AWAY!”

Every lemur has a role in its group. A typical group is made up of six males, eight females, four youngsters, and four babies. Lemurs can live in groups of up to thirty animals, and females are ranked higher than males, even when there is an older male.

During mating season, male ringtails compete to impress the females. After a few shouting matches and things like that, the real fighting begins. Males do a bobbing dance around each other, then slash viciously with their teeth. Winning males get to mate and the losing males may find themselves with a much lower rank. This all happens during April and May for one day only.

Ringtails are great parents. The baby holds onto the mom’s back, where it will

Physical Education is Academic By Emma Lyons-Rogers, Grade 3

P.E., or PE stands for physical education. PE is very good to do because it can help you in many ways. For example, it can help you get flexible, better at sports, and so much more. However, to to be all those things you

    2

need to have a good coach to help you because it depends what exercises you do.

At Gardner Street School we have PE, and also a great coach. So, most people can get very fit.

At the beginning of every PE class we start by running two laps. Then, we do an activity. There are many fun games. One of them is frisbee. Frisbee is when you find a partner then you both find a cone and throw a frisbee to each other. Then our coach makes it harder and harder. We also play a game called ladder. That’s when you have a ladder on the floor and you jump in each square either on one foot or two.

I have a great time in PE because it is so fun, especially because of our coach!! Thank you so much Coach Dareh!!

There are other types of lemurs, too, like sifakas, crowned lemurs, mouse lemurs, and aye ayes. Lemurs have died down because the monkey population got too big, although some survived because they were relocated to Madagascar.

Hmm...what do you think of that tweet?

Tweet: Laziness is a trait in blacks..I believe that no black person will be president anytime soon.

This tweet was posted two days after he became president. It got likes and dislikes (the amount I don’t know), but his tweet got a lot of rude comments and

readers said bad stuff in return. This is what I’m talking about these tweets are going overboard for story of his social media life.

I mean...come on Trump...you are saying these things. I’m not trying to say anything mean, but you say Hispanics shouldn’t be in America and then you say you love them. That does not make sense when you’re president...like what?

2016 Chess Tournament By Contributing Writer Michael Isyan, Grade 4

The Chess Championship that Magnus Carlsen (Norwegian, FIDE, Rating: 2853) recently won in 2016 occurred in New York, with corner world Chess Champion Garry Kasparov (Russia/USA, FIDE, rating: 2812) commenting.

Carlsen, the current “World Champion” Fought a fellow Grandmaster Sergey Karjakin (Russia, FIDE, Rating: 2772) for the prize of defending his title and earning 600,000 Euros. The match consisted of 12 regular games (40 moves in one hour and forty minutes) but, due to the fact that these were tied 6-6, four rabid games were played in which Carlsen emerged victorious 3-1. The match began on November 11, 2016 and ended on November 30, 2016.

    2

This match invited comparisons with the 1972 clash between American Grandmaster Robert James “Bobby” Fischer and Soviet legend Boris Spassky, in which Fischer famously won by one point.

Magnus Carlsen became a grandmaster at age 13 (FIDE, Rating of 2853 highest one). Carlsen, at age 26, is already a legend. He won five Chess Oscars and numerous other awards. In 2013, Time Magazine named him one of the most influential people in the magazine.

Grandmaster Sergey Karjakin has competed in seven chess Olympiads. Three tournaments were completed as a Ukrainian champion and four as a Russian. He brought home three gold medals, two silver, and two bronze. Karjakin became the world’s youngest grandmaster at age 12. He is number nine on FIDE, the main chess organization, rating list.

If you want to learn and play Chess… I would suggest reading Checkmate! My First Chess Book by Garry Kasparov. The author teaches chess from the beginning and it has fun tests to find out what you have learned. It’s a sequel to Checkmate Tactics, which teaches a more advanced level in chess. Personally, I would give both books a 5 star rating. They both really helped me learn the ways of chess!

Cultured Dairy What is the Annenberg Space for Photography? By Sandra Rutwaza, Grade 5

The Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City.

    1

Located in Century City, The Annenberg Space for Photography is a place where people express who they are. This is a cultural exhibition hall that is dedicated to showing both digital and print photography in the same environment.

The Annenberg Space for Photography features state-of-the-art, high definition digital cameras. Also, it has traditional prints by some of the world’s most famous photographers.

The reason why the Annenberg Space for Photography is not called a museum or observatory is because every season they bring down old photos and bring up new ones for the public to view. Most of the photographs are modern from photographers that are still alive. Admission is also free to the general public. The Annenberg Space for Photography is also inspirational because it lets people express their true colors and know that they will not be judged, because that’s what the Annenberg Space for Photography is all about.

    2

The current exhibition is Identity, showing until February 26. Upcoming exhibits are Generation Wealth (April 8, 2017 - August 13, 2017) and Puro Cuba (September 9, 2017 - February 25, 2017). For more information including hours and location visit www.annenbergphotospace.org.

Culture: Ukrainian Secret Lifestyle By Claudia Balsells, Grade 5

Have you ever wondered what Ukraine has to eat, or what they wear, or about their traditions? To answer these questions I interviewed 5th grader Anna Kapshuk and found out many things about the Ukrainian culture. There’s some really nice things to eat and even wear. So let’s get ready to explore the beautiful things and wonders that Ukraine has. Food

The foods in the Ukraine are very diverse. For instance, there is a delicious beet soup that is red when you see it. I’ve tried it and it’s the best soup you can try it. It has a lot of ingredients, which gives it a lot of flavor. There is also a Vareniki, a type of bread dish is stuffed with mashed potatoes and meat. This is the national dish of the Ukraine and is extremely delicious. Traditions

When people come to Ukraine they greet you with a tradition dance that’s called ‘’Bread and Salt.” During this dance, they give you bread and salt so you can be part of the Ukraine community. There’s so many traditions but it would take me all day to tell you about the awesome traditions they have. Weather

Valentines Special Cupid: Who is He? By, Mabel Elliott, Grade 3

On February 14, a little baby with wings flies around, making people fall in love. He is Cupid. He will remain a myth. His role in history continues today as the mascot of St. Valentine’s Day.

Long before the Romans adopted and renamed him, he was known as Eros, the god of love. Accounts on the lineage of Eros describe him as the son of Nyx and Erebus, or Iris and Zeyphyrus or Aphrodite and Ares, or even Aphrodite and Zeus. One of the stories about Eros says that he once shot a golden arrow at Apollo, making him fall in love with Daphne, a forest nymph. But he shot a leaden arrow at Daphne, making her repulsed by him.

After Greeks and Romans stopped believing in mythical gods, Americans adopted him and made him modern.

History of Valentine’s Day By Staff Writer Anna Kapshuk, 5th Grade

Cupid. I l lustrated by David Noskov.

Each year February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine’s day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia.

Valentine's day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14. Valentine's Day has become the modern custom connecting the day with romantic love. While the custom of sending cards, flowers, chocolates and

    2

other gifts, Valentine's Day still remains connected with various regional customs in England. In Norfolk (a country in East England), a character called 'Jack' Valentine knocks on the rear door of houses leaving sweets and presents for children. Although he was leaving treats, many children were scared of this mystical person.

In Slovenia, Saint Valentine was one of the saints of spring, the saint of good health and a helper of pilgrims. A person was reported to say that "Saint Valentine brings the keys of roots."

    Plants and flowers start

    3

to grow on this day. It has been celebrated as the day when the first work in the vineyards and in the fields. It is also said that birds propose to each other or marry on that day.

Valentine's Day has only been celebrated as the day of love. The day of love was traditionally March 12, which is Saint Gregory's day, or February 22, Saint Vincent’s Day. Love was Saint Anthony, whose day has been celebrated on June 13.

Saint Valentine supposedly wore a purple ring, customarily worn on the hands of Christian

Chocolate Milk in LAUSD Schools Written by Michelle Babalyan, Grade 5

    Chocolate milk should stay

banned from LAUSD schools because so many kids are overweight, flavored milk is unhealthy, and the milk overly processed. On average, the extra sugar alone would add about 2-3 pounds to your weight. This is important because of student’s health. Do you want people to be healthy or not?

One reason that LAUSD should not bring back chocolate milk is because kids can become overweight. For example, chocolate milk has two times more sugar than regular milk does. Also, the chocolate milk has 150-220 calories. So imagine the whole

    2

school year, which is 180 days, and each day having 150-220 extra calories. This shows that with all that sugar, students are more likely to gain weight. Per year you would weigh about 2-3 pounds more and that is a lot for kids, especially because there are so many years of school. That’s why and how chocolate and flavored milk is bad for you, and kids get overweight because of it.

Another reason I think that chocolate milk should stay banned from LAUSD schools is because chocolate milk is unhealthy. For example, “when kids drink chocolate and strawberry milk everyday at school, there getting nearly two gallons of extra sugar each year. This proves that chocolate milk is really bad for their health,” explained Jonathan Smith from the article Chocolate Milk More Harmful Than Helpful.

    3

Consequently, one carton per serving has about 30 grams of sugar and that’s way more sugar than sodas even have. Chocolate milk has chocolate you say but chocolate has a ton of sugar so it is unhealthy either way. Specifically, chocolate milk is like a soda; Imagine drinking it everyday. In particular, it has been found that excess sugar and weight gain can lead to diabetes, a long term disease. So this is why you shouldn’t drink chocolate or flavored milk because it is unhealthy.

Finally, the milk is overly processed. Most importantly, the milk that you give in school just plain milk is like water. From my experience, the milk we already drink tastes like sweet water. It has 12 grams of sugar in just one carton of milk. In particular, you use the same milk that you give to kids here daily to

    4

make the flavored milk. Also, every time I drink it I feel so sick. You might think the milk is nice fresh milk from cows, but no it’s not, it is highly processed. From the video Milk How it is Made, the documentarians reported that ‘’they get the milk from the cows and then put it in a tub” from the tub it is processed. That is how the FAKE milk is made for the flavored milk. The milk is not even real so you should not even call it chocolate milk.

These are important reasons why chocolate milk should be and stay banned from LAUSD schools. So many kids are overweight because of it, it is generally unhealthy, and the milk that itself is highly processed. So you can make the choice of having kids being unhealthy and overweight, or kids having to grow up strong and healthy. Please make the right decision.

Ocean and Freeway Pollution Can Cause a Catastrophe By Natalya Coco Chavez, Grade 5

The environment is polluted and pollution causes a lot of problems for plants and animals that live there. Pollution is when people litter, put chemicals into the environment, or cause disruption to the environment in general. Polluted places have a hard time keeping living things and something

    2

should be done about it. Two types of pollution are ocean and freeway pollution.

Ocean pollution happens when people throw trash into the water. People shouldn’t just throw dirty diapers or plastic bottles in the ocean like it’s a trash can. NO. That is not how Mother Nature works. Unfortunately, they do.

One problem with throwing trash in the ocean is that there is a garbage patch collection of the marine debris in the North Pacific. The marine debris is a giant island of trash that ends up in the ocean, sea, and other large parts of water. The garbage patch spreads between the water from the

    3

west coast of North America to Japan. One reason why ocean pollution is a problem is because sea creatures either eat the plastic or have a hard time finding their food sources, and then have a hard time surviving. Scientists predict that over time living creatures in the sea could become extinct because of ocean pollution.

The second type of pollution discussed here is freeway pollution. From my perspective, is the worst out of all the other parts of the world that are polluted, especially in Los Angeles. Whenever I pass by the freeway I easily see at least 500 pieces of trash and I feel disgusted when I see trash

    4

around the freeway. I sometimes wonder if other people feel the same way as I do about pollution. I feel like from all the trash I see and from all the trees I see there might be a chance that all the trees will die and we wouldn’t be able to breathe and survive.

While we are still alive and have the power to make a change in how much we pollute, we should come together to help teach other people about pollution so that they know it exists. This is important in the fight to help reduce pollution long term. One day, we all might not exist because of pollution, so please help spread the word to help save the world.

This column is written by The Potato, our advice columnist. Students ask questions and The Potato answers. If you have a question for The Potato, come to Room 24 to drop off your question in “The Potato’s Box” before or after school. Your question may be featured in Issue 3, coming out in the spring. Dear Potato, How can I be a better friend? Signed, S.I.R.

Dear S.I.R., You can help people when they are sad or hurt to make them feel better. You can also hang them out with them at recess and lunch. Your Friend, Potato Dear Potato, I’m always getting into arguments with my best friend and I don’t know what to do. Can you help? Signed, Fighting BFF Dear Fighting BFF, First of all, you can say sorry. If one of you guys started the fight you can say sorry first and start being nice to them. Or, you can go talk to Leadership down at the playground and tell them that the Potato sent you to take part in a Peace Talk. Good

Signed, I Need Help Dear I Need Help, If you want to get a boy to like you, you’re going to have to act normal and calm, or else they will think that you’re weird. So, you have to act yourself all the time. Then, you might get the boy. Your Friend, Potato Dear Potato, I hate doing homework. Why do I need to do it? Help… Signed, School Bored Dear School Bored, I know homework can be

    4

boring if you’re not into it, and may not want to do it all the time, but you are going to want to do it after I tell you this: If you don’t do homework in elementary school, it can affect your middle school, high school, and college experiences. If you don’t do well in some areas because of your homework, you may not be able to get fun classes in middle school like music and art. When you try to get a job in high school and college, some employers look at students’ grades and records, and if you didn’t do your homework you may not get the job you want because your grades may not be as high. If you don’t get a job, you won’t be able to make money and you could become homeless. So, do your homework. Your Friend, Potato

    Gelson’s, continued from p. 1

    5

increasing tardies for students. Tardies mean lost instructional time. Parents would also receive increased e-mails and phone calls about attendance through MISIS, the LAUSD attendance system, which calls whenever a child is late or absent.

Traffic and student safety is also a concern over the development. One parent recounted a time when she and her daughter were almost killed by a falling streetlamp after it was hit by a car on Sunset and Gardner.

    6

Sofia Ratcovich explained, “one day, me and one of my kids were crossing Sunset Blvd. to Gardner Street. There was a truck driving down the street and it had made a turn. With that turn, the truck accidently hit a streetlamp that fell right in front of us. Once that had happened, we didn’t know what to do and what would happen next. Was the truck going to start moving again, or will it stop? So, right away we both backed away and stood near a wall of a shop to

    7

see if the coast was clear.” Ratcovich said that she felt frightened and felt almost like she was in a three dimensional (3D) film instead of on the street. With more traffic, we all risk the danger of a serious accident.

Interesting enough, on February 10, 2017 Ratcovich was driving by Sunset and Gardner around noon, after dropping her daughter off at preschool at Gardner. She saw that the same traffic light had been knocked down by a wayward driver and

    8

contacted us to let us know. This highlights the problem with traffic safety in our neighborhood, and this isn’t even with the promised construction and finished supermarket.

In my opinion the proposed Gelson’s development should not happen because it could cause problems, cause traffic, and it also could cause significant danger right on our block.
