Now that Passover is completed, our tradition commands that we begin counting the Omer. We count from the first day of Passover until Shavuot. While Passover consumes our lives for seven days, we spend weeks focusing on our next holiday--Shavuot. Shavuot is, after all, the holiday that commemorates one of the most significant moments in our tradition. Shavuot is the anniversary of when God gave Moses the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. While the Ten Commandments have been a source of ethics and knowledge for countless cultures over the years, the Talmud focuses just as much on the process of giving the tablets as they do on the words inscribed upon them. First, the rabbis pointed out that all Jews were present at the moment God gave the commandments. As such, God delivered the message in a way that allowed every Jew to understand. Both toddlers and elders were able to understand the words. From this, our rabbis teach that Torah should be accessible to everybody at every level. The Talmud was also focused on the inscription on the tablets. When Moses saw that the Hebrews were worshiping the golden calf, he smashed the tablets. The inscription, however, was not destroyed. The letters remained in tact and ascended back up Mt. Sinai, waiting for Moses to bring them back again. This teaches us that our tradition is eternal. Despite our mistakes, the Torah is always there for us when we are ready for it. Finally, the rabbis pointed out the method by which the tablets were to be transported. As they came down the mountain, they were placed in the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark was covered with pure gold within and without. The Talmud describes this as a representation of our ideals. Each Jew should not only have Torah on the inside, but use it to shine on the inside as well as the outside. Putting these lessons together, we discover the importance of Shavout. As we celebrate the day upon which the Ten Commandments were given, we remember that these words belong to everybody, they are there for us even when we stray from them, and when used properly, we become the best versions of ourselves on the outside as well as the inside.
