Confirmation Course 2013
Have you got questions about the Christian faith?
Were you baptised but never got round to being confirmed?
Maybe you have been confirmed but need a “refresher course” about what it means to be a
Christian today!
***********************************
I will be leading a Confirmation Course over 6 sessions during May and June. A number are already planning to attend, both young people and adults.
On Sunday 21 July there will be a Confirmation Service for the Test Valley Benefice in St Peter’s Stockbridge at 10.45am. We are privileged to have The Bishop of Winchester, Bishop Tim Dakin taking this service.
It would be great to have as many as possible attending the course and supporting the service.
Please contact me as soon as possible if you or someone you know is interested in joining the course.

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting
and election of Churchwardens are the
political side of our Christian life, as
such, they are important. A good
attendance shows that we are interested
in St Peter and St Paul’s mission, as
well as making the meetings lively and
memorable!
The election of Churchwardens is open
to people who live in the parish as well
as those on the church electoral roll.
Persons whose names are entered upon
the church Electoral Roll (and such
persons only) are entitled to vote at the
election of parochial representatives of
the laity (Parochial Church Council).
At the Annual Meeting, the financial
statements for 2012 will be discussed
together with reports from various
church groups. The Minutes of the
2012 Annual Meeting have to be
approved as well.
This year, four members of the
Parochial Church Council (PCC) come
up for election or re-election and there
is also one vacancy each for the
positions of Churchwarden.

The 2013 Annual General Meeting of
King’s Somborne Cricket Club was
held on Thursday 11th April. The
following persons were re-elected
unopposed: Roger Jackson (President);
Richard Harwood (Chairman); Charles
Buckley (Honorary Treasurer); Frank
Fahy (Honorary Secretary); Leon
Fisher (Club Captain).
The newly established Gentry Trophy
is named in honour of Mr. Richard
Gentry, a long-standing member and
staunch supporter of KSCC, who some
years ago
rescued the
club from
oblivion.
Richard’s
wife, Angela
Gentry, was
also a very active supporter for many
years. Members were delighted that
Angela was able to attend the AGM to
present the Gentry Trophy to Rory
McClenaghan who was elected the
‘Players’ Player’ for his many fine
performances on the field of play. It

was proposed and agreed to offer
Honorary Membership of the club to
Past-President John Chalcraft. Chris
Kirby was confirmed as club
representative on the Village Hall
Management Committee.
The Honorary Treasurer presented the
club accounts and declared the
financial position to be healthy. It was
agreed that subscriptions and match
fees should be unchanged from last
season. Members were reminded that
until they pay their annual subscription
they are not covered by the club
insurance.
It was announced that the concrete
extensions of the practice net run-ups
that are currently being installed were
partly funded by a grant of £240 from
Hampshire Playing Fields Association
and a grant of £400 from King’s
Somborne Parish Council, the
remaining cost being provided from
club funds. The indoor nets at Test
Valley School were very well
attended.
The club wishes to thank KSWMC for
their provision of a meeting place for
the AGM.

School news Easter service Many parents and friends joined staff
and pupils in the Parish Church for the
school’s Easter service on the last day
of the spring term. The service opened
with the school band, conducted by
Rob Eckett, playing ‘Wagon Train’,
after which all were welcomed by the
Rev Jonathan Watkins who led the
service. The first hymn was ‘We have
a King who rides on a donkey’, after
which the readings of the Easter story
were accompanied by dramatisation by
children in KS1, who also showed
their lovely art work. Following this,
children in years 3 and 4 used alphabet
cards to spell out the words
SUFFERING and RESILIENCE to tell
how suffering can be overcome in
order to succeed. A prayer of
thanksgiving for new life preceded the
hymn ‘Everywhere around me’ , after
which Rev Jonathan said the closing
prayer and thanked all the children and
staff for their hard work in preparing
for the service. The band then played
‘Duke Street’.
After the service, Headteacher Mrs
Julie Way invited all into the school
for hot cross buns and the opportunity
to view the results of the Easter Plate
competition organised by the KSSA.
Clarinet concert Parents and friends of children in years
3 and 4 were once again treated to a
delightful end of term concert when
the children demonstrated their clarinet
playing skills. The majority of the
children were new to the instrument at
the beginning of term and it was
impressive to
see how far
t he y h a ve
progressed in a
relatively short
space of time.
In her introduction, class teacher Mrs
Windsor acknowledged all their hard
work and said how impressed she was
with how well they had played
together as a team. A very enjoyable
selection of tunes followed with the
children clearly enjoying the occasion
every bit as much as their audience.
The children also sang both
unaccompanied and in 3 and 4 part
rounds, with the addition of clapping
and tapping in rhythm. The audience
probably had the most difficult task as
it was very difficult to sit still during
such tuneful and jaunty tunes!
Class assemblies Towards the end of term two very
contrasting assemblies enabled
children to share with parents and
friends the topics in which they had
been engaged during the spring term.
The Butterfly class had been
investigating the topic of Recycling
and a slide show before the start of the
assembly showed them busily
interacting with the school’s outdoor
environment. Through readings,
9
drawing, science worksheets, rhymes
and singing with Ben Goddard to a
guitar accompaniment, the children
demonstrated just how much they had
learnt about the need to respect and
look after the environment. It was
lovely too that one member of the
class, namely Isaac Natt, had received
a Highly Commended prize in the John
of Gaunt awards for his model –
‘Going Green’. Well done Isaac and
all the Butterflies.
In sharp contrast, Years 5 and 6 – the
Otters – had been busy researching the
Ancient Greeks, with their assembly
focussing on the story of the Trojan
War. They all looked great in their
togas and masks and props such as
swords and shields added much to
their very novel retelling of the story.
We were even treated to the spectacle
of the Greek News being read with the
help of 21st century technology in the
form of microphones! Dramatisation,
role play and voice projection were all
excellent and Mrs Way congratulated
the children on all their hard work and
the parents too on the lovely costumes.

Making history through art The children of King’s Somborne
Primary School held a celebration of
Art week in March.
Central to the week was the creation
of a magnificent wall hanging
depicting imagery and symbols of the
history of the school. Rev Dawes, the
founder of the school, would have
been delighted to see nature, elements
of science and key events so vividly
brought to life. The final art work is
truly stunning, the more you look at it
the more you see revealed.
But Rev Dawes would have been
even more heartened by the way the
whole school community worked
together to collate the rich collage.
Catherine Cartwright designed and
led the project and enabled every
child to add their own bit of spark and
ingenuity. The final textile wall-
hanging not only shows the history of
the school but encapsulates the
warmth, zest for learning and feeling
of belonging that makes this village
school so special.
Heartfelt thanks to Catherine
Cartwright and to all those who
helped through the week: Mrs Chant
Mrs Finch, Mrs Lee, Mrs Litton Mrs
McBean, Mrs Tubby and all the staff.

Just before the start of the school’s
Easter break, Chairman Mike
Reynolds and committee members of
the Somborne and District Society
attended a special assembly in the
school to present prizes in this year’s
John of Gaunt Award. This local
history prize is awarded each year by
the Society to children in years 2 – 6.
With 14 entries and 22 entrants (some
were joint entries) judges Daphne
Fields, Sally Wilson and Mary Pollock
were set a challenging task in deciding
on this year’s winners. Entries
covered a wide range of topics; King’s
Somborne village, John of Gaunt’s
Palace, Sir Thomas Sopwith, WW2,
History of the Parish Church, Muss
Cottage, Horsebridge and King’s
Somborne School. There was a
variety, too, in the ways in which work
had been presented ranging through
CD and USB presentations, written
work, drawings, photographs, a model
and needlework.
The children’s interest in the topics
was apparent as was the ability to work
collaboratively demonstrated by those
who submitted joint entries. It was
fitting that the event followed the week
after the school’s Art Week (see page
9) which focussed on a very special
figure from the past – namely the Rev.
Richard Dawes, Founder of the school
which opened in 1842.
Winners were as follows:

Footpath walk 7.75 miles (12.5 km) 3.25 hours
Sunday 26 May 2013 9.30am King’s Somborne Village Hall
Please note earlier start time.
We leave the village via Froghole and up the hill to How Park
where we turn left onto the Clarendon Way. We follow the
Clarendon Way across the water meadows to Houghton and
on to Broughton. On reaching the edge of Broughton we turn
left and drop down to cross the stream by the ford. We then
take the road opposite and at end of the track we turn left onto
the bridleway that climbs along the edge of the wood up to the road at Little
Wood. We turn left along the road for 200m then turn right along the side road.
At the end of the road we follow the footpath that continues ahead for 50m
before turning left towards Pittleworth Farm. At Pittleworth Farm the footpath
turns left and after another 100m joins the road. We turn left along the road for
800m and at Bossington Farm we turn right across the water meadows to join
the Test Way. We turn north along the Test Way and, just after the old station,
we turn right, past the John O’Gaunt to take the footpath back to the village.

The upgrading of the entrance hall is
proceeding apace and we are pleased
with the progress so far. The ceiling
and walls have been re-plastered. New
doors are to be fitted to the toilets and
also to the main hall. Once the
painting and plastering have been
finished, we will lay new carpet tiles
and a new coir entrance carpet.
The electrical work has been
completed and visitors should notice
many improvements. The entrance
hall is now lit with LED bulbs which
should last much longer and use less
electricity (see photo). Also, when
you enter the Hall at night, the
entrance light outside goes on
automatically which means that you
don’t have to struggle with keys in the
dark. We have also managed to get
one of the two floodlights which
illuminate the recreation ground
working and hopefully the other will
be back in action reasonably soon.
The heating controls have been altered.
Previously, there was just an on/off
switch and as the heating was left on
overnight there was a considerable
cost. Sometimes the boiler cut out and
hirers were left with an unheated hall.
We have now fitted a timer so that the
maximum time that the heater can be
left on is 6 hours. If people need a
longer time they can reset the timer; if
so, please set the timer before
switching on the heating.
We have also fitted new emergency
lights in the toilets and at back of the
stage. The Hall now complies with
modern regulations.
The development committee are now
looking at the next phase of
redevelopment: upgrading the main
hall. We have visited neighbouring
village halls and we hope we can learn
lessons from them regarding lighting
and heating. In addition, we have
some ideas about opening up the area
behind the stage.
O b v io u s l y to a c h ie v e t h e s e
improvements we will have to raise
more money by seeking grants and
organizing events. We have done very
well so far and I am optimistic about
our ability to do so in future.
So don’t forget these future events:
Coffee morning on the 27th April,
Clay Pigeon Shoot on 10th May
Beer and Music Festival on 18th May.

Holy Week The United Family Service on Palm
Sunday started from the Methodist
Church with everyone waving their
palm leaves as the procession
weaved its way through the village to
the Parish Church, remembering
Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The
Service in the Parish Church was led
by the Rev Jonathan Watkins and the
Rev Dr Rosie Baker gave the address.
After the service, the large wooden
cross was put up in the corner of the
churchyard in anticipation of the
events of Good Friday.
On Maundy Thursday, an Agapé meal
and service was held in the Methodist
Hall organised by ‘Christians
Together’ remembering Christ’s last
supper.
At the Parish Church a Devotional
Service was held on Good Friday
morning led by our Reader Sue
Holligan and Howard Rowe, Reader in
Training. The service reflected the
crucifixion and death of our Lord in
words and prayers.
On Easter Saturday, the flower ladies
adorned the church with flowers
including the lilies in the Lady Chapel
and at the Chancel Steps in memory of
loved ones whose families had donated
monies for these lilies. A list of names
were placed around the church.
A short Candlelit Vigil Service was
held on Saturday evening led by the
Rev Jonathan Watkins to mark the first
day of Easter. Afterwards a garland of
flowers was placed on the Cross
outside the church as well as the
inscription ‘Christ is Risen’ for events
on Easter Sunday.
Both village churches held communion
services on Easter Sunday and were
full with family and friends. At the
Parish Church, the Somborne Singers
sang the anthem ‘God So Loved the
World’ from Stainer’s Crucifixion, and
the service was led by the Vicar.
Afterwards Linda Aucock and David
Bevan organised a very successful
Easter Egg Hunt in the grounds of the
church for the many children who
came with their parents to the Family
Service.

The Somborne
and District Society Our programme of excellent monthly
talks continues on Wednesday 22 May
with marine archaeologist Jan
Gillespie speaking on “Wrecks and
Submerged Landscapes of the Solent.”
The following month we have our
annual evening outing on Wednesday
26 June. This will be to the small
Hampshire town of Alton where a
local guide will take us to the town’s
acclaimed museum before walking us
a r o u n d A l t o n ’ s i n t e r e s t i n g
conservation area. Travel is by car and
we meet at 6.00pm in the car park next
to the Community Centre. After our
tour we will have a meal at The Swan
Hotel in the High Street. If you wish
to join us please sign up at one of our
meetings or let me know by telephone
(388107).
In the last edition of The Gauntlet I
highlighted our project to mark the
centenary of the outbreak of The Great
War next year and asked for
information relating to those villagers
killed in action during this conflict.
We know that local records, including
those on the War Memorials, may be
incomplete and we welcome any
additional material which may
contribute to the accuracy of our
project.
The Blue Plaque we are placing on our
village school to commemorate its
founder, the Revd. Richard Dawes, has
been ordered and will be fixed and
unveiled during the summer term.
We know how much local history
means to our local schoolchildren
through their enthusiastic entries for
the annual John of Gaunt Award which
the Society promotes. This interest
will ensure that the work of celebrating
our community heritage will be in
good hands for future generations.
Finally, please make a note in your
diary of our AGM to be held in the
Village Hall on the evening of
Wednesday 24 July.

The Somborne
Sisterhood WI Despite a last-minute change of
speaker due to illness and a lot of our
members being away because of the
Easter break, an interesting and fact-
filled evening was had by those
attending our meeting on 5th April.
Tim Ellison, from the Winchester &
District Beekeeper’s Association (and
husband of Natalie, our Secretary)
stepped in with just 24 hours notice to
give a talk to us on beekeeping and the
plight of the honeybee. Our Latin was
tested, there was a touch of horror
(who knew that the male drone’s
bodies were ripped apart after mating
with the queen bee?!) and a nod was
given to the cancelled sugarcraft
session (beekeepers feed their bees a
sugary fondant if honey stores are
running low after a long, hard winter).
After questions, we all adjourned to
the refreshments table where a
selection of honey cakes and pastries
were there to tempt us. One new
member signed up (bringing our
membership to 30), the raffle was
drawn and the meeting closed.
Our next
meeting is
on Friday
3rd May in the Village Hall when we
will be holding our first Annual
Meeting. However, there will also be
some sl ightly more tempting
distractions for you on the night – look
out for updates on our facebook and
twitter pages nearer the time.
If you’re interested in coming along to
one of our meetings, we meet on the
first Friday of the month in the Village
Hall from 8.00pm. Alternatively, log

Vintage afternoon tea raising money for
Naomi House The ‘pop up’ trend arrives in Stockbridge with
local catering firm, Taste, hosting a vintage
afternoon tea at Stockbridge town hall on Friday
31st May, from 12 noon. Profits from the day
will be going to Naomi House.
Those wanting to treat themselves to a
quintessential English tradition and raise money
for an excellent cause, should book a table for the
event by calling Emma Way on 01264 860649 or
by visiting www.taste-food.co.uk
Taste’s sumptuous afternoon tea will include
delicate sandwiches, accompanied by the lightest
of homemade cakes
and freshly baked scones served with clotted cream
and jam. As a Hampshire fare member, Taste uses
excellent ingredients from local suppliers.
Afternoon tea will be served on the finest quality
vintage English bone china and offered with a
choice of delicious teas or you could indulge
yourself with a glass of Cottonworth Vineyard’s
English sparkling wine.
This event is the first of its kind in Stockbridge but
tables are limited so we urge you to book.
Christian Aid week has arrived again.
It is 12th to 18th May.
We are getting together a small group
to do the collection and, as always, we
would be delighted if a few more
people would like to join the team.
We are very fortunate in our villages,
that even when people decline to give,
we are always met with courtesy.
We started the collections in 2004 and
to date we have sent in the grand total
of £7,363.74 (plus the tax refunds).
I am sure this has been much
appreciated.
Thank you.

King’s Somborne WI Our President Thelma Blamey chaired
the meeting held on 10 April.
The Book Club reported that they had
enjoyed reading “The Paris Wife” (she
was married to Ernest Hemingway)
and looked forward to the next book,
which has the intriguing title “The 100
-Year Old Man who Climbed out of
the Window and Disappeared”!
Fortnightly walks are still being taken
and attendance was good at the
Romsey Show Coffee Morning and the
Group Spring Meeting at Tytherley.
Plans for summer events were
discussed; it was agreed to run a Gift
Stall at the Church Fayre on 9 June
and also to hold a Summer Party on 14
August at a member’s house.
Mrs. Blamey welcomed the speaker,
Jan Sanders, who told us about her 15
years of giving voluntary aid in
Romania. Having originally worked
as a nurse and a midwife, she also
lectures on sexual health here in the
U.K.
Jan’s forthright and upbeat manner
belied the tragedy of women’s and
children’s lives under the cruel and
corrupt regime in Romania. Through
visual aids, we were able to see the
world of privation in which women
struggle in remote village areas to
manage their own health problems and
bring up their children under primitive
and insanitary conditions. Nor are
things much better in the towns and
cities.
Jan Sanders founded the charity
“Share” and, with her team of
voluntary helpers, regularly visits the
town of Sibiu and surrounding country
areas. She encouraged members to ask
questions and was warmly thanked for
her interesting talk. Members were
glad to contribute towards her very
worthwhile cause.
The next meeting will be the May
Resolutions and AGM on Wednesday,
8 May, at 7.30pm in the Epworth Hall.

After the break for Easter we have
continued looking at some of our
favourite Old and New Testament
stories, as well as the season of spring
(if it ever arrives!).
The children have painted, glued,
coloured and cut their way through a
host of craft materials to create
masterpieces linked to each week’s
subject. They listened to stories and
sang songs based on the theme too.
New faces
are always
welcome at
Tiny Tots.
So, if you’d like to join us, come down
to the church each Tuesday at 2.00pm
for a drink and biscuit with the session
getting under way by 2.15pm,
finishing at 3.15pm.

The Minister has the last word
Dear Friends,
So Easter is over. Are you any different? Apart from being a year older,
did it change you in any way? Has it ever changed you for that matter?
And if I ask myself the same questions - Yes, it did change me this year,
because preparing to preach on the Sunday after Easter I realised that post
-resurrection the disciples were changed and so should we all be as
Christians. At some level, I had realised this in the past but it had not
really had much impact on me. This year for some reason it did strike me
that post-resurrection we should have a resurrection faith and it should be
obvious to other people!
Maybe though we are a bit like the first disciples huddled in their upper
room with the door locked against the outside world, rather confused and
even frightened to go out and talk to others about our faith.
That is why Jesus sent The Holy Spirit to strengthen and encourage those
disciples. We celebrate this at Pentecost. Effectively this is the birthday
of The Church and so we do it ecumenically as Christians Together in the
Sombornes and District.
This year our joint service will be at the Methodist Church. We also use
this opportunity to renew our Covenant to work and witness together.
Why not come and join us? So it won’t just be Easter that changes us this
year because we too can experience the coming of the Holy Spirit to help
us broadcast and witness to our Resurrection Faith!
Yours in the Service of Christ,
xv
