It also aims to further enhance the creativity and invention of the students, as well as incorporate alternative methods of learning into the academic curriculum. The fair is inaugurated by Physics Inspector of the Ministry of Education & Culture, Andreas Papastylianou. 16 March More than 200 students take part in a dance competition during GCS Night 2012, organised by Form 3. Lower School classes amaze their audience with their inventive entries and provide thorough entertainment with their energetic moves! First prize winners: 3 Blue. Second prize winners: 1 Orange.

13 March The GCS Science Department organises the 1st Annual GCS Science Fair, the purpose of which is an insight into what the students are exposed to during school hours, and to bring the parents closer to the classroom. It also aims to further enhance the creativity and invention of the students, as well as incorporate alternative methods of learning into the academic curriculum. The fair is inaugurated by Physics Inspector of the Ministry of Education & Culture, Andreas Papastylianou.

22 March Greek play production of Iacovos Kambanelis’s ‘Το Μεγάλο μας Τσίρκο’: an outstanding performance by the members of the Greek Drama Club. Teachers-in-charge: Mrs Stella Koutsoyianni and Mrs Despo Liasi of the Department of Modern Greek.

Clubs & Societies20 March The Art & Design Club arranges for a Design and Animation talk by Mr Costas Mantzalos, Dean of School of Architecture, Fine and Applied Arts at Frederick University. The event aims at giving students the opportunity to understand Art & Design beyond the classroom, as well as providing them with a broader understanding of the subject and what could follow should they choose a career in Art.

20 MarchThe Current Affairs Club organises a presentation and discussion on the meaning of the Cyprus EU Presidency, for our society and the young generation. Guest Speaker: Journalist Kyriakos Pierides (author of “Europe in Transformation, Cyprus and the EU”)

26 MarchTwenty-six members of the Current Affairs Club successfully complete a 4-month training workshop on Gender-based violence and peer education coordinated by the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS) and funded by the Daphne III programme of the European Commission. The workshop is part of the project ‘Youth4Youth: Empowering Young People in Preventing Gender-based Violence through Peer Education’ comes to a close with a special ceremony held at Old Pallouriotissa Cultural Centre, addressed by Commissioner for the Protection Children’s Rights Mrs Leda Koursoumba.

27 MarchThe Current Affairs Club organises a presentation on stray animals in Cyprus, life at the sanctuary and animal welfare. The

amount of € 250 is donated to the sanctuary on behalf of the School. Guest Speaker: Mr Nikos Kountouris (Fund Raising Offi cer for Argos Animal Sanctuary). Teachers-in-charge: Ms Maria Chrysanthou and Mrs Carmen Papacleovoulou.

27 MarchThe Art & Design Club organises a presentation by Illustration Designer Ms Simone Philippou to present her work to the students. The artist talks about illustration design, her studies, examples of her work at university and current projects. The students are assigned a project by her, which will be followed by a visit to her workshop.

Events & Activities1 MarchThe French Department arranges for a lecture entitled “The importance of the French Language: studies and job prospects” by Mrs Nada Papaeftychiou, representative of the French Embassy and responsible for university studies in France. The presentation includes important issues such as the signifi cance of knowing a modern foreign language in a multicultural society, career opportunities, student experiences, and studies in France or England.

5 MarchGCS Art & Design teacher Ms Marianna Penga is selected among other jewellery designers, to design a series of jewellery inspired by the Zambellas Museum’s modern art paintings. The chosen ranges will be displayed at the opening of the Museum on 26 April. Ms Penga will be exhibiting pieces inspired by Karima Ben Otman’s painting “The Kiss”.

14 MarchThe Mathematics Department, along with the students of the School, celebrate the World Pi Day. During breaks, the students and the teaching staff of the Department sell pies and all proceeds are donated to charity.

28 MarchThe Mathematics Department congratulates the winners of the Menu Problems session organised by the Maths Club. Forty-four students order a meal form a café menu including delicacies that satisfy even the most mathematically hungry! Each table of students chooses two appetizers, one main course and two desserts. Winners: Team 1: Katherine Mavrommati, Olivia Ioannou, Savvas Louca, Kyriaki Ioannou and Alexandros Yiakoumi. Team 2: Kyriaki Hadjipanteli, Alexia Stylianou, Anna Taliadorou.

29 March The members of the GCS Volunteers Club sell Easter candles for charity.

30 MarchMembers of the Dance Club perform a choreodrama dedicated to Gregoris Afxentiou for the 25th March and 1st April celebration.

14 MarchThe French Department and the students of all French classes organise the charity event ‘La fête de la Francophonie’.

16 MarchThe money collected by GCS students and teachers in aid of the Make a Wish Foundation, is given to a group of motor bikers - members of various motorbike clubs – who arrange to make a stop at the School for this purpose, as part of their charity bike ride.

17 MarchMrs Marianna Zittis, Mrs Maria Mitidou and Mrs Eleni Xeni participate in a GCE Economics seminar held in Nicosia.

18 MarchThe GCS Parents & Guardians Association organises a Rally Treasure Hunt for all students, parents and staff.

20 MarchStudents of Form 4 participate in the Pisa 2012 Survey.

20 March The Careers Department arranges for KPMG representatives to give a presentation to students and parents. Topics covered: Accounting, Audit, Accounting professional qualifi cations (ACA, ACCA) and related career paths.

22 MarchAll Form 1 students attend a lecture on the Venetian history of Cyprus by archaeologist Anna Marangou.

25 MarchStudents of the Upper Forms represent the School in the 25th March Parade.

26 MarchStudents of Form 3 participate in Children’s Rights workshops supervised by staff of the Commissioner for Children’s Rights. The aim is to raise awareness of the Convention of the Rights of the Child and how those rights can be implemented in society. The session includes an informative talk by guest speaker, Ms Leda Koursoumba, Commissioner for the Protection of Children’s Rights. The activity is arranged by Ms Frangesca Pieri and Ms Georgia Efstathiou.

29 MarchThe members of the MERA Programme team present the fi ndings of their research on road safety during an event held on the School Premises. The event is attended by students, teachers and distinguished guests.

30 MarchStudents and staff commemorate the 25th March and the 1st April Anniversaries during a celebration in the School Auditorium. Teachers-in-charge: Ms Georgia Kyriakidou and Mrs Despo Liasi.

Achievements

9 MarchThe following students participate and excel in the Nicosia District Track & Field games organised by the Ministry of Education & Culture. Kashiouli Nicole Gold Medal, Stylianides Nicholas Silver Medal, Shianios Demetris Bronze Medal, Christofi des Ioannis Bronze Medal, Eraclides Constantinos Bronze Medal, Clark Ioanna Bronze Medal, Lambri Kyriaki 4th place.

21 MarchForm 4 student Irini Efthymiou is awarded by the Grammar School for having excelled in an inter-school poetry competition.

21-25 MarchHaving been selected by the Cyprus Mathematical Society, the following students of Form 6 represent the school in the EUROMATH 2012 Student Conference in Sofi a: Kyriaki Hadjipanteli, Kyriaki Ioannou, Evi Georgiou, Anastasia Yiannakou, Kristi Antoniou, Savvas Louca, Nikoletta Louka, Antria Zanti, Andrea Spanou, Sofi a Christodoulou, Olivia Ioannou, Zoe Pitta and Constantina Mikeou. Kyriaki Ioannou and Constantina Mikeou are awarded the 3rd prize for their math related poster “Famous motion, Famous birds”.

22 MarchThe School Management announces that the following students have been selected to represent the School in the London International Youth Science Forum this summer (16-30 August): Stephanos Kythreotis, Olivia Ioannou, Savvas Louca, Andri Hadjimbalassi, Christos Pierides and Demetris Christofi des. Stephanos Kythreotis and Olivia Ioannou have been awarded a partial scholarship for their participation in the forum.

22 MarchThe following students are awarded for having excelled in the art competition “Water, the most precious thing we have”, organised by the Water Authority: Alkis Christoforou, Marios Argyrides, Christoforos Christou, Ersi Christodoulidou, Alexis Stylianou, Sofi e Kakoulli (scholarship for 3-year studies in the Art Department of the European University of Nicosia), Evanthia Pourkou (partial scholarship for studies in the Art Department of the University of Nicosia), Eleni Constantinidou, Mikaella Melanidou, Stefanie Dionysiou, Kalia Apostolou (best GCS entry).

28 March Alexandra Zissimidou of Form 5 is awarded a scholarship by the German Embassy for a 4 week-stay in Germany. The visit will include lessons at a German school and guided tours around various cities.
