Volume 9, Issue 1

ACADEMY
By Mrs. Yeager
Dear Families,
Each day is a gift to be with your children and watch them grow
and learn. I enjoy my time with the children more than anything, even
just saying, “Hello!” to them in the crosswalk and asking how their day
went. We truly have such special students and families here at GWA and
I am thankful to be a part of it.
This first Trimester went quickly (at least for me) and I am so
proud of the great efforts made by students, faculty, and staff. The
students whose names appear in this newsletter deserve special
recognition, as do all those who have tried their very best and put forth
their exceptional effort. At GWA we try to recognize small acts of
kindness, hard work, and good character. It is one of the things that sets
us apart and lends to the ‘family’ feel of our school.
So many people contribute to the successful education of our
students on a daily basis. I would like to take this opportunity, at this time
of “Thanksgiving” to express my appreciation to every single employee
at GWA, each of whom is an integral part of the journey. A special
“Thank you” to our Board of Directors who guides us in our efforts and is
made up of many dedicated individuals. Certainly, our parent volunteers,
and PTO deserve accolades as well. Most of all, I would like to thank the
teachers of GWA who give so much of themselves and go so far ‘above
and beyond’ to ensure that our children are getting the best education. I
see the hours put into preparation and planning and the excitement that
occurs when they find a way to teach something ‘even better’ than before.
I am excited for the remainder of the year and for the shared experiences
to come. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any suggestions,
comments, or concerns. Happy Thanksgiving!
Warmly,
Mrs. Yeager Anya Yeager, M.S.

3rd-Grade Student from George Washington Academy School District
Wins $1,000 Scholarship Account from Utah Educational Savings
Plan and Zions Bank(Salt Lake City)
The Utah Educational Savings Plan (UESP), Utah’s official nonprofit college savings plan, and Zions
Bank awarded Avari Tripp of George Washington Academy School District a $1,000 UESP
scholarship account for winning the 2014 “Make Your Mark” Bookmark Contest. The judges
selected Avari’s bookmark design as a winner in the kindergarten—3rd grade category. Avari and other winners chosen from a total of more than 2,300 entries statewide were honored
November 14 at a luncheon ceremony at Zions Bank headquarters in downtown Salt Lake City.
“These dedicated students are the college graduates of tomorrow,” says Scott Anderson, president
and chief executive officer of Zions Bank. “We are honored to help them achieve their dreams.”
The “Make Your Mark” Bookmark Contest is held each September—designated as College Savings
Month by Utah Gov. Gary Herbert—to raise awareness about the importance of higher education
and saving for college-related expenses.
Avari says, “I think it’s really cool that I won $1,000 for college just by doing art, something that I
love.”
Contest winners can use their $1,000 UESP college savings scholarship accounts to pay for qualified
higher education expenses at any college, university, or technical school in the United States or
abroad that participates in federal financial aid programs for students. Qualified higher education
expenses include tuition, fees, and required books, supplies, and equipment.
“These winning students have been given a head start with their UESP scholarship accounts,” says
Lynne Ward, executive director of UESP. “Anyone can open a UESP account for free and start
investing with just a few dollars. The more families invest now, the less students need to rely on
loans in the future.”
See the winning entries in the “Make Your Mark” Bookmark Contest at uesp.org/bookmark. For
more information about the Utah Educational Savings Plan, visit uesp.org, call UESP at

AWESOME

By Philip Loomis
Heading into this holiday season, the GWA Board would like to once again thank Mrs. Yeager and her amazing
team of administrators, faculty and staff for the wonderful work they have been doing this year. At this time of
thanksgiving, it is important to acknowledge how fortunate we are to have these folk working so hard to educate
our children. As our recent SAGE test scores show, their efforts are paying off, making GWA the best elementary
education option in Southern Utah.
With the first trimester now behind us, we encourage GWA parents to continue being involved as much as
possible. Our children learn not only from textbooks, but also by our example. It is easy to become complacent
when the newness of the year has worn off, but it is essential that our kids recognize the importance we place on
education. Volunteering in the classroom, as a lunch aide, or in any other capacity, shows them we are dedicated
to education and to their success.
Thank you for all you do, and for choosing George Washington Academy to help your children build a strong
foundation.
