I chose to use Gettys, a hospitality and hotel design, procurement, development, and branding firm, for my corporate office design project because I was an intern in the Chicago office over the summer of 2012. It was a wonderful experience getting my first exposure to professional interior design, so it seemed like an obvious choice for me to use what I learned as a member of the Gettys team in designing an office space for them.

What I LearnedWhile doing this corporate ofice design project, I came away with some great research and design experience. I started this project by first researching different office trends, regulations, lighting, FF&E, and environmental systems to make better design decisions for Gettys. As a class, we took a tour of our asigned office space at 302 West Third Street in Cincinnati, OH as well as the Knoll showroom. While on the tours, we were able to gather information on different office environments and furniture systems. Throughout the semester, I filled out timesheets, meeting minutes, and weekly reports as well as a contract and an invoice to practice being organized about time, money, and decisions made in the process which was benefical in practicing for the professional environment. Also, I followed along with the design phases of Pre-Design, Conceptual Design, Schematic Design, Design Development, & Construction Documents to better understand the process of professional interior design. After the final design presentation, I made actual construction drawings using Revit Architecture which was a challenge but a great learning experience. I took Revit Architecture in conjunction with this studio prior to entering the professional realm of design as it is an extremley powerful and innovative program for design and construction. In conclusion, through trial and error of different concepts, space planning, and styles, I prepared a final product for the Gettys Group Cincinnati office that I believe is a true representation of the Gettys diverse and sophisticated brand. Enjoy!

Why I Chose Gettys

Page 4: The Gettys Group Cincinnati (corporate office design project-Miami University ID)

For more than twenty-five years, Gettys has been a leading hotel and hospitality design, procurement, development, and branding firm. Gettys completes a variety of projects in scale, geography, and style each year for luxurious resorts, chain hotels, restaurants, and much more. Their headquarters is in Chicago, IL, but there are also offices in Miami, Irvine, Hong Kong, and Manila. And, now there will soon be an office in Cincinnati!

Gettys prides themselves on the beautiful and exquisite resorts they design as pictured above. They are not afraid to use bold colors, textures, and geometries to bring the “WOW” factor to their spaces. My goal with the Cincinnati office is to bring a piece of the richness and drama of their hotel designs into the office in which they work.

Inspiration: The Gettys Spirit“Design is all about perspective, creativity, vision, and most importantly, collaboration. Gettys believes that teamwork is a powerful tool that simply cannot be underestimated, whether creating a luxurious destination resort or planning a charity event.

Therefore, we are dedicated to building trust and camaraderie, both amongst ourselves and with our clients.

Our team is made up of diverse personalities, including fresh young talent, seasoned professionals, and above all, passionate designers. Our leadership team values breakthrough thinking and elegant solutions that make projects more successful, more beautiful, and more fun. We genuinely enjoy working together, and as a result, we know you’ll like working with us.” (connect.gettys.com)

As a derivation from “The Gettys Spirit” excerpt as well as experiencing the teamwork and camaraderie among the employees first hand as a summer intern, I decided that my concept should be:

a celebration for the community of Gettys as a whole.

Page 8: The Gettys Group Cincinnati (corporate office design project-Miami University ID)

a celebration for the community of Gettys as a whole

How may I implement this idea into the offi ce space?

To represent this celebration for who they are and what they do as a whole, I designed the offi ce to celebrate the moments where the Gettys people come together the most to collaborate, work, and play.

Strategies to Encourage Collaboration & Teamwork:

1. Circular tables and chairs or couches encompassing a central table to share ideas2. Open plan kitchen area- Gettys loves their “Chip & Dip” parties on Friday evenings!3. Glass conference rooms4. Materials library in a central location with big working tables and fun collaboration spaces5. Open pin-up space throughout with movable ottomans to accomodate any size group6. Community pin-up boards in big, chunky frames on central feature wall

Not only did I want to celebrate the moments where the Gettys people come together to work and play, but I wanted the space to celebrate what they do by using materials and furnishings that exemplify the bold textures, colors, and geometries they use and represent the cultural fl air that Gettys has as a company. I even took into consideration in some of my fi xtures the clear represenation of radiating around a central area as another addition to my concept of celebrating where people come together.

As I was considering how I may integrate this concept whole-heartedly into my design, I realized how the Gettys logo is so fi tting for this concept as a geometric representation of many different people collaborating together in a central space.

CONCEPT

This project took a drastic change from its start to its end. Through trial and error, I came to discover how different wall types encourage circulation patterns. My main goal throughout the process was to lure people to come together to the central corner of the fl oorplan where I had a large collaboration space. The collaboration space in the corner evolved into being the materials library and the curved walls directing circulation to the central space were removed as I found other ways to attract people to gather together for my fi nal project.

Reception/Lobby Area Entrance

This image shows the front desk in which all Gettys employees and clients will be welcomed into the space. For Gettys employees, the hospitality space consisting of rich fabrics, playful accessories, and contemporary geometries will be a great place to gather for large casual meetings or happy hour parties. Not to mention, it will give guests and clientel an understanding of the type of work that Gettys designs. The mosaic tile of the desk, lattice pattern on the back wall, and the radiality of the accessories all relate back to the concept of celebrating people coming together as a whole and as well, it adds elements of the Gettys “WOW” factor.

Kitchen/Cafe

Right off the reception area, one will find the cafe area. A major feature of the space is the luminous mosaic tile wall collection in a pattern of Moroccan descent. Once again, this tile wall represents the Gettys people gathering together as one because each individual tile comes together to represent a more beautiful whole. Bright white cabinetry and counter space contrast against the deep aqua wall. As an open kitchen area, this space will attract everyone to come and socialize before work begins, during a lunch break, or after a day’s end. The cafe is in a very centralized location which will make it easy to serve coffee, breakfasts, or lunches to clients and employees.

Materials Library Spaces

These renderings celebrate the most important aspects of each room as they are places where people come together to collaborate. To the left, both images are views from the materials library in which there are these fun huddle spaces that can be public or private with just a pull of the sheer curtains secured to the top of a suspended, circular, metal structure. The huddle spaces were inspired from middle eastern canopies and fabric draperies. For the flooring of each huddle space, I brought in a bright, lattice patterned carpet to correspond with each curtain color. Radiating light fixtures and bright white contemporary furniture from Fritz Hansen were added in each of the huddle spaces as well. The large conference room above consists of a rich gray and bright white pallete, but the significant feature is the large, light fixture above made of magenta colored blown glass.
