From the artistic Director

I am pleased to welcome you to the amerIcan premIere of The Gift by Joanna murray-smith and directed by maria aitken. after their collaboration on last year’s world premiere in melbourne, we are thrilled to reunite this internationally-acclaimed duo and provide them the opportunity to continue to examine and refine their stellar work.

having the opportunity in 2010 to produce Joanna’s play The Female of the Species, a side-splitting comedy with a dark streak coursing through it, we were eager to find the next project on which we might collaborate. The Gift provides that opportunity — an intelligent and provocative new work that poses challenging questions. while wildly different, both The Female of the Species and The Gift highlight the hallmarks of Joanna’s style — her plays come alive with a sense of humor while maintaining a breezy sophistication that takes the audience on an unexpected journey. her writing is rich with social satire, hilarity and an unnerving edge that puts an audience off balance enough to see circumstances through an enlighteningly different prism.

I’m happy also to welcome the world-class director maria aitken to the Geffen. a preeminent actor and scholar of noël coward — in addition to other impressive credits — she is a force and perfectly paired with her australian counterpart. together they have assembled amazing designers who transport us to a tropical island, a los angeles home and into the ocean itself. In addition, maria has helmed an ensemble of actors as fine as they come, and the result of all of these pieces coming together is something we hope you will enjoy.

as we look forward to a new year with new hope, we also continue our commitment to new work. writers such as Joanna make this search a joy with a fresh perspective that is smart, challenging, scintillating and that gives fodder for discussion on the ride home.

enjoy The Gift.

welcome to the geffen playhouse

Page 4: The Gift Program

It Is, as always, my pleasure to welcome you to the thIrd show of the season in the Gil cates theater. The Gift marks a return to the Geffen playhouse for playwright Joanna murray-smith whose show, The Female of the Species, was a smashing success a few seasons ago.

It is also that time of year when we begin to look forward to our favorite event of the season: Backstage at the Geffen. this star-studded evening of behind-the-scenes stories, laughter and surprises will be held in may, 2013. the date will be announced shortly. Backstage benefits our education and outreach programs which serve more than 22,500 low income youth, seniors, veterans and community members each year. these programs are an aspect of the Geffen of which we are enormously proud.

I would like to take this opportunity to acquaint you with one of these programs: the Geffen playhouse writing project.

In response to a request from two principals at mendez learning center in the Boyle heights area of east los angeles, the Geffen is using theater as a tool to assist high school youth with their writing skills. not only does this program expose these young people to theater, but it uses their experiences here to develop their critical thinking and their ability to express their thoughts in writing, particularly as they prepare to pass the essay requirement of the california high school exit exam.

working closely with six classrooms of 10th grade students in this immersive writing program centered around our season of plays, Geffen teaching artists use the plays as thought-provoking and, quite simply, fun springboards for discussion. this dialogue and self-expression boosts the students’ confidence in writing while developing an appreciation of the arts.

we look forward to presenting the results of this program to you this summer. In the meantime, know that your donations are what make this rigorous and innovative program possible.

on behalf of all of us at the Geffen playhouse, I wish you a happy new year. enjoy The Gift!

Amy Levinson: As an Australian writer, do you feel your plays need adjustment when bringing them to an American audience? And if so, what does that adjustment entail?

Joanna Murray-Smith: I didn’t realize for a long time that my plays had any geographical markers. It was never a self-conscious decision. I think that at the very beginning of my playwriting life I felt as if the job was to reduce the story to the barest and most primal human elements: love, suffering, rage, competition, envy, spiritual longing, grief over mortality, sexuality and so on. one way of being “elemental” was to deny the story the kind of specifics which would allow an audience to give the story away, as in “that’s not my life, it’s an australian life.” from the very beginning, I saw the plays as

belonging to any audience so I wanted to allow my audiences to place the plays in their own landscapes.

AL: without giving anything away, can you talk about your impetus for writing this play.

JMS: It’s always very hard to pinpoint the origins of a play, since they can begin with only a whisper of a passing thought. But a lot of different ideas collided here, in part the notion of how we deal with several competing parts of ourselves and more specifically the notion of duty to creativity. Is there such a thing? do artists have a moral responsibility to create? what happens when that collides with their other more ordinary human responsibilities? I think I was interested in this in a metaphorical way, and suddenly it seemed

interesting to me to play out this idea in a literal story, to push the boundaries of what seems feasible and see if I could take the audience along for the ride. I hope that whether or not you “buy” the set-up of this play, you will find the tussle of ideas engaging and provocative enough to suspend disbelief for ninety minutes. In addition to this, I am always drawn to stories where a single accidental moment transforms all that follows. two couples meet at a resort and their destinies are forever altered. there’s a hitchcockian element to that idea that thrills me. most of my plays are about moral boundaries and the human compulsion to transgress.

AL: Does your process always begin in the same way? how do ideas come to you? how do you flesh them out?

JMS: my working style is usually to write a first draft in a mad flourish over a couple of weeks, and then to take a long time, sometimes a year, fixing, editing and revising. I’m always surprised how much the finished play retains of that early draft: everything that’s good about a play happens when the thinking is not moderated or censored. and yet you need the nitty gritty revisions for structure, clarity and sometimes for taste or good judgement.

AL: Can you talk a bit about how you got started in theater and what keeps you attracted to it.

JMS: I never chose to be a playwright, I fell into it. I always (immodestly) believed myself to be a writer — from the age of seven or eight. and I loved the theater and went to it a lot as a child. my uncle was a well-known actor in london, and I loved and admired him. But ultimately I think I started because from a very young age, I always “heard” ideas in the form of arguing voices. my parents and their friends were all left wing writers and artists and intellectuals and they stayed up all night in summer arguing about the world. we spent every summer in a cabin on an uninhabited island between the mainland of australia and tasmania, in the middle of a wild stretch of sea. each night, I listened in on those adult voices, and even though I didn’t understand the content, I did understand how power shifted between voices, how no one was always all right, how sometimes eloquence triumphs over morality, and the sheer exhilarating power of the spoken word.

AL: Can you talk a bit about your process from idea to fruition and how involved you like to be during the rehearsal process.

JMS: I like to be as much a part of rehearsals as the director wishes me to be. there is nothing worse than a writer planting themselves in the rehearsal room for the duration; no one wants you there, and if they do, they shouldn’t. the first week, when the script is closely examined, is nightmarish — but at least the writer can be useful. this is the point when actors ask lots of questions, most of which you cannot answer, when they ask for changes you don’t want to make

but can’t explain why not. But with a first production, or an early production, that first week tests the strength of the foundations of the play and the writer must face that music or there will be hell to pay later. later in rehearsals, it’s useful for the writer to come back as a “clean” pair of eyes — someone who knows the work intimately but has not been lost in the forest of incremental development. In previews, the writer believes she or he is very useful and totally right, but often directors are dealing with bigger problems than the fact that the leading lady is emphasizing the wrong syllable in the eighth word of the third line of the play or that the other character would never wear yellow socks.

AL: Do you find the audiences in Australia to be very different than in Los Angeles? Does it change how your plays are received?

JMS: I’ve found audiences to my plays have been remarkably similar from sydney to la to new york to london to rome to tokyo. the plays are about being human (and often about being middle-class and educated). I’ve found the resonances, the triumphs and the criticisms are usually universal. what makes audiences different are different productions of the same work, rather than the play itself or inherent cultural antagonisms or preferences. a bad production will fail to engage audiences anywhere. a good production will find the magic more nights than it doesn’t — and this is true anywhere.

amy literary Director / artistic associatewhile I am always nervous about having to stand in front of an audience, I do love talk backs. they provide audiences an opportunity for in-depth discussion about a piece of art that is completely fresh in their minds. It is much like the conversation you have on the car ride home, but here artists can directly answer any questions that may arise. I almost always learn something from the audience during discussions and that is invaluable for me both as a dramaturg and as part of the team that selects the plays we produce.

phyllis castiNg Director/artistic associatetalk Back tuesdays are a great opportunity for the actors to share inside information about how a play comes to life: what happened during rehearsals, how did the director work, what was the discussion around the table? hearing questions from the audience also allows the actors to know how their story lands. we talk about the themes of the play, the details of the characters and the work of the designers; talk backs are always illuminating.

KristiNa literary associatethe only thing I love more than reading plays is talking about them. one of the best aspects of my position is the opportunity to interact with theater enthusiasts and artists alike. as a talk back moderator, I get to do it all. here on a tuesday? stick around and find out the scoop!

raNDy artistic Directorthe number one reason that the Geffen playhouse exists is to bring the community together. It is inspiring for us to produce a play, then listen and see what kind of an experience people are taking home from it. the actor does something on stage that inspires a reaction in the audience and that in turn inspires the actor, and this continues until the curtain goes down. at that point, we can break down the fourth wall and discuss our shared experience. that’s the beauty of live theater, and with our talk Back tuesdays we can keep that conversation going.

coNversatioN poiNts For the riDe homePlaywright Joanna Murray-Smith’s work frequently prompts conversation. Here are a few points to get you started …

do artists have a moral responsibility to create?describe an experience that changed one of your strongly held beliefs.

Is parenting a selfless act?

talK BacK tuesdays are performances that feature post-show dIscussIons wIth artists and Geffen playhouse staff. these forums are dedicated to providing the audience with in-depth production information, an opportunity to discuss the play and an overall enhanced theatrical experience. It’s interactive, fun and thought-provoking; now let’s meet the moderators!

one of pulitzer prize winner david mamet’s defining works, American Buffalo was instantly hailed as a new american classic when it opened on Broadway in 1975. now, Geffen playhouse artistic director randall arney takes a fresh look at these misguided misfits who are a little out of luck and way out of their league as they plot the theft of a rare coin collection. as the time of the heist approaches, tension and anticipation build, revealing loyalties and testing friendships. negotiating explosive humor, frenetic energy and surprising tenderness, this play, which has not had a major los angeles production in more than a decade, promises a mesmerizing night whether seeing it for the first time or rediscovering this groundbreaking work.
