ANNUAL STAND-UP COMPETITIONDale Lorzo emceed this year’s event. Four contestants took up the challenge to win trophies and the honor of receiving the People’s Choice Award. Contestants’ performances are as follows:
1. Al Skinner performed a linking finger ring routine with lots of laughs. He took first place in the competition.
2. Pepe Puglisi opened his act with a wine bottle production from three si lks handkerchiefs. He next magically produced a pair of sun glasses and a top hat while holding a curtain up in front of him using both hands. He then proceeded to perform a card trick in which a selected card was found sealed inside a tin can! For a finally, Pepe produced a long colored streamer from a set of paper covered darning hoops. Pepe took third place in the competition.
3. Joe Chez performed two mental effects, one in which three spectators freely picked different colored envelops and Joe correctly predicted both the colors and the order in which the spectators lined up. He next had the spectators pick several numbers and correctly predicted the sum, including his own math error. Joe’s performance was very good. He was however was technically eliminated from this year’s competition for being outside the time constraints.

RAFAEL BENATAR was born in Venezuela and currently lives in Spain. He is one of the most active members of the prestigious Escuela Mágica de Madrid and one of the few magicians that performs regularly in all three rooms of the Magic Castle.
Rafael Benatar has lectured, in five languages, for magicians of many countries and this year he was nominated by the Academy of Magical Arts for the Lecturer of the Year Award.

Rafael Benatar’s lecture will include commercial and practical items from his working repertoire, including card magic for the stage as well as for the table, coin magic, a routine with silks, and his latest update on his well-known cups and balls, with new insight on this classic. His explanations will be full of practical advice that can help raise the level of all the magic you do.

4. Richard Aylward opened is act by stretching a handkerchief to double its length. He then performed Charlie Miller’s Left-Handed Hank. Next Richard performed a one thimble routine in which the thimble magically penetrated the handkerchief. Finally, he performed Dai Vernon’s The Peripatetic Walnuts in which three walnuts vanish one at a time and appear under a glass which is covered by a tin can. Richard took second place in this competition and won the People’s Choice Award.
