Did you know?........ (A little bit of Canadian Theatre Trivia)

Antoine Foucher (1717-1801), of Terrebonne (father of Louis-Charles Foucher), was the owner of the first Francophone theatre in Canada. In 1774, with various British officers, he staged the first production of Molière at his home in Montreal. Other Garrison performances were private shows put on for troops, publicly performed by officers, which helped bridge theatre and war during its initial stages of development. It was welcomed by the populaces and distracted soldiers from war and routine military protocol.

Before 1825, the Hayes House Hotel on Dalhousie Square, Montreal, had a theatre that staged German Orchestras and held Viennese dances. After it burned down, John Molson built the Theatre Royal in 1825, presenting Shakespeare and Restoration authors. It sat 1,000 guests and was also used for circuses and concerts. Edmund Kean and Charles Dickens both performed there before it was demolished in 1844 to make way for the Bonsecours Market.

Questions and Answers! We are often asked what roles and duties are required by production crews so, this is another in a series of information bits on how you can become involved in a production by Gabriola Players.

“What is the role of? .............”

Front Of House Manager

The Front of House is responsible to the Producer.

Duties:

1. Oversee the smooth operation of the Front of House. 2. Be responsible for ticket sales at the door, crowd control and distributing

programs and collecting at the end of the show. 3. Ensure Front of House staff and techs are wearing name tags. 4. Familiarize yourself with the theatre facility. Know the locations of:

washrooms, phone, exits, fire extinguishers, and fire alarms. 5. Get cash box from Producer/Treasurer.

Crowd Control:

1. Ensure that outdoor directional signs are in place for all shows. 2. Meet and greet patrons in a friendly, welcoming manner. 3. Each ticket should be checked that it is for the correct performance, torn

in half with one half going back to the patron and the numbered half kept in a container for accounting.

4. Ensure that there is a box set up and a sign encouraging recycling of programs. 5. Check washrooms just before show starts and inform the Stage Manager that

the show is ready to begin. 6. Remind patrons carrying cameras or recording devices that their use is not

2. The cashier should have the cash box with a float and tickets available for sale at the door.

3. Tickets paid by cheque should be made payable to Gabriola Players. 4. Once the performance has started the cashier will deliver the cash box and all

Overture!... Curtains!... L I G H T S Gabriola Players has a lot to be thankful for over the past month! As many of you will have already seen, our new stage spotlights made their debut during the The Gin Game, and worked brilliantly... literally! Thanks first and foremost to Michael Stebbings, a stage lighting guru from Nanaimo with whom we've organized workshops in the past, who happened to notice 12 Colortran stage lights collecting dust in the corner of a theatre whose lighting system he was upgrading. Knowing how much we'd appreciate and make use of them, Michael acquired them all on our behalf, tested and serviced them, replaced any missing or broken parts – and we took delivery at minimal cost in time for the last production. The icing on our cake, however, came from Gabriola Recreation Society, who recently awarded the Players a grant to purchase a computerized control board that will operate the Colortrans and will provide state-of-the-art lighting functions for our future productions. A huge "thank you" to both Michael and Gabriola Recreation Society for blessing us with their generosity.

Play Readings

Just in case you don't have enough to keep you occupied during the summer, our informal play readings will resume – the next date being Sunday, 7 July, 3:00 pm at the Rollo Centre. We'll be reading a murder mystery comedy: The Marquis Crossing Ladies Society's First Attempt at Murder, by Pat Cook. You think it's easy to write a murder? Just ask the Marquis Crossing Ladies Society for the Arts. They decide to do just that, especially when they find out they have to pay royalties to do someone else's play. The ladies soon find themselves writing an "operatic murder mystery dinner theatre with possible audience participation," providing no one sells fruit to the audience! Then two genuine convicts on the run decide the best place to lay low is with the ladies, who drag them into the play. This is a wise-cracking farce where no one can tell the loaded guns from the unloaded ones.
