feel most welcome (see pic below).

Feast of the Assumption We celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary at our Mass this week, and it was an opportunity to reflect on the lives of women in our College and Church communities. We are so fortunate to have had many positive female role models in our church beginning with Jesus’ mother Mary. More recently, we have had amazing women who have influenced Catholic education in particular and who have lived out their union with Jesus with such clarity and conviction that we can learn so much from them about how to find where God is and who God wants to be for us.

Amazing examples of women in our Church who have had a remarkable impact include our very own St Mary of the Cross MacKillop “never see a need without doing something about it”; Catherine McAuley the founder of the Sisters of Mercy “The simplest and most practical lesson I know... is to resolve to be good today - but better tomorrow” and Mother Teresa “let us always meet each other with a smile, for a smile is the beginning of love”.

Our Mass is a reminder of the wonderful contribution that so many committed women make in our College, our Church and our world today, whether it be in formal positions of leadership, as teachers and as wonderful ESO staff, and also in the most important role as mothers of the young people that attend this school. We are indeed blessed by your presence, influence and care.

“FOR A SMILE IS THE BEGINNING OF LOVE”

GreaseLast week we were indeed privileged to witness the fruits of many months of hard work with the fabulous production of Grease. 70 students were involved and had been rehearsing diligently since last year, giving up a lot of their own time, as did a group of dedicated staff, to ensure that the production was of the highest quality. We had approximately 600 students from local primary schools attend the three matinee sessions, and around 850 at the three evening performances. It was superb! The quality of this production was staggering in every aspect, the singing, dancing, acting, the sets, costumes and music. It really was an outstanding performance and my thanks and congratulations go to all involved.

As I am sure you would be aware; productions of this calibre and magnitude will only happen with the commitment and dedication of the staff and students involved. The staff volunteer so much time and effort outside of school, on weekends, during the holidays and beyond to ensure that the students involved in this production could put together such a wonderful performance. My deep thanks to the Production Team of Mrs Carly Meakin, Mrs Dianne Deptula and Mrs Sally

Parsons in particular for their amazing commitment. Mr Andrew Crosby also played with the band at each of the performances. Thank you also to the students involved, both on stage and behind the scenes, for all of your hard work and sharing your talents with us. All who attended had a wonderful time. The cast and crew were exhausted yet elated after the final show on Friday evening, and the energy and excitement of performing in front of such a large and appreciative audience will stay with them for a long time to come I am sure.

Subject Selection Course CounsellingIt has been another incredibly dynamic week at Gleeson with subject counselling sessions for Year 11 and Year 10 students on Monday and Tuesday. While the subject selection process can be a trying time, my advice is to not make the process more complex than it needs to be – we have many professional staff here at Gleeson College who are happy to work with you and help you find your way through the process. As with most things in education, if school and home partner well together, we are sure to end up with the best result.

Kogakuin Junior High School StudentsLast week we welcomed 12 students from Japan as part of a Study Tour hosted by Gleeson College. We warmly welcome our visitors and trust that they will enjoy the experience of our Australian culture and school environment. Please make our visitors

Order in Care Group > Last day to order is Monday 21 August

As part of the Damiani House Charity event in Week 5, all students have the opportunity to pre-order an Original Size Boost Juice for $6 this week. All proceeds go to support LIVIN!

This year, the Damiani House Student Leadership Team have taken it upon themselves to revamp our annual fundraising event. Through consultation and collaboration, the leadership group has chosen to support an Australian charity that has meaning, value and importance for them as young people.

LIVIN! are an Australian NFP organisation founded in 2013 who focus on raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention, pushing their core mission that, “It Ain’t Weak to Speak”. Their approach is that we can beat mental illness providing we unite in love, support and understanding, which ties very closely with Damiani House.

Wednesday to Friday next week, Damiani House Leaders will be facilitating a number of events endorsed by LIVIN! to promote healthy living, friendships, acknowledge individual students

personal skills and talents, and to have some fun, all of which we are confident will support the headspace of all of the young people who become involved. Wednesday will see the Damiani House participate in a number of House challenges where students will work with their friends to achieve some different physical and intellectual goals. We will also have fruit available, as well as music and dancing in the courtyard during lunchtime.

Throughout the lunch break on Thursday and Friday, a gold coin donation will allow participants to demonstrate their skills when Mario Kart will be set up across a few screens in the Learning Hub. We expect the cheers from the supporting crowd will help set some course records on this classic party game, while also encouraging friendly rivalries and demonstrating personal skills within and across year levels.

Boost Juice are also supporting our cause, and are donating $1 from every purchase made through pre-orders of

regular juices, which will be distributed to Damiani and Fyfe students on Thursday, and to Hughes and McDonald students on Friday. A reminder to all students that Monday is the final day to pre-order a Boost Juice, so if you are looking to support this part of the event, be sure to speak to your Care Group teacher on Monday.

There will be ample opportunity to support LIVIN! throughout the week by dropping any spare change into the different collections points around the school, and any donations will be greatly appreciated when tallied up and sent to LIVIN! Thank you in advance to all students, families and staff for their part in supporting this worthwhile cause or particular relevance to the young people at our school.

OPEN GIRLS KNOCKOUT SOCCER > Gleeson def Kildare 4-0 @ Home

The Gleeson Girls Open Knockout Soccer Team faced Kildare in their first

The girls played an amazing first half with both Rebecca Pratt (11 DSHEW) and Alana Fitzsimmons (8 FMPAR)

scoring two goals each to place Gleeson in a comfortable 4-0 position at half time. The second half saw the

girls to play a more defensive half, keeping the final score 4-0. The overall

performance of the team was great and a special shout out to keeper Tyler Dunlop (11 HSFEL) for securing a clean

sheet in her first game in goals! We now all look forward to our upcoming clash against long-time rivals Henley
