The Rector’s Message

“Little Things Mean Alot”

Little things mean alot in my life as a priest in a small country church environment. One of the ways I refresh and

renew is to take time to search out and remember what may have been recent, small, bright moments that poke through

days that otherwise are “cloudy.” There are those days from time to time when I feel like the little boy in the Peanuts

comic strip who walks around with a messy little cloud hovering over his head, following him around everywhere he

goes. Maybe some of you out there know what I mean.

And so I take a little time out and try to find the bright moments that can offer a “Swiss cheese” effect on my

personal cloud. Bit by bit the good memories poke holes in that little cloud and dissipate its shadow over me. Here

are some recent examples in my life in these small country parishes:

About a month ago the “lost” Parish Registers for Whitechapel and Trinity appeared miraculously on a

shelf in my study at Trinity. For six years the Parish Register for each church for the years immediately

preceding my call here had been missing, despite desperate and deliberate search at both locations by

many of us. Of course that was a HUGE moment – an “Alleluia, praise God from whom all blessings

flow!” moment when what was lost was found! And then what seemed like a small, “spur of the moment”

moment happened the other day when a parishioner visited and during that visit I pulled out the recently

“found” Whitechapel Parish Registers. We leafed through the pages and found the exact record of her

confirmation by Bishop Clay Matthews (There was his handwritten signature!), as well as the later

marriages of her two children. Only about ten minutes passed encompassing what may have seemed

only a few moments in my day, but ones that seemed to be very important to her as she laid eyes on

words on old pages evidencing memorable moments in the life of her family in a church she deeply loves.

Last Sunday at Trinity when one of the younger members with other children, knelt at the Altar rail, face

shining, hands outstretched, and joyfully grasped the small wafer I placed in the palm of her hand. And

then, slipped back to the altar rail when her mother came forward. Again this little girl beamed my

way a bright smile and held out her hand for seconds. I learned some time ago that she loves to practice

giving communion to others in the group in the young people’s room in the basement at Trinity. Her light

that day fed me. Hmm, I wonder what her future holds and I am reminded that even a small child can

create a sanctuary anywhere the Spirit moves.

Resting in a folding chair at the Labyrinth on a Friday evening at SMWC’s Fall Ingathering, I experienced

moments feeling the peace there, as the evening sun hovered close to the horizon as I finished the last

bites of an ice cream sandwich (one of my childhood favorite treats). My eyes swept around the circled

gathering, guitar music filled the twilight time and I believe I experienced that “peace which passes all

understanding” – opening to the spiritual gift of that place in those moments. Two days later the newest

member in the St. Mary’s Whitechapel family, shared with me how wonderful that evening had been for

her, too. I was graced with the warmth of her joy in remembering that evening.

Once I get started on remembering some of those recent moments, they begin to flow more and more and

I am “enlightened” by the gifts so freely given, if only I have eyes to see them. These small memories begin

to fill me up – shining through the clouds and lightening the burdens I had been carrying.

Too often these two wonderful churches seem to have a cloud overshadowing them. The clouds gather

when we become stressed, tense, grumpy, complaining about what is not right, when we feel that the work

we do is burdensome, not fulfilling, duty heavy, not enlightening. I suppose it is something in our human

nature that causes us to often look at the glass we hold in our hands as half empty, not half full.

In the days ahead, please sift through your memories, consider what your church home means, has meant,

to you and your family. Remember the bright and holy times when the light that shines through the clear

glass of old windows in old churches that have weathered the tests of time, has warmed you. When kneeling

in a pew or at the Altar rail has sustained you. When the gentle smile or a touch by someone sharing Sunday

morning with you has made your day a bit brighter and fed you in a way that nourished you. Remember

those small, gracious moments. And may they help you to be open to the Divine grace that flows through

those precious moments. May they offer light to your journey on this path we call life. Let thankfulness

flow. It dispels darkness. It is good for heart, mind and soul. Enjoy your memories and may they renew and

refresh you.

Blessings,

Torrence

RECTOR’S OCTOBER SCHEDULE

Rector's Days Off in October: Mondays, Oct. 7th-8th, 21st, & 28th Tuesdays, Oct. 1st & 15th

Office Hours at Trinity Thursdays, Oct. 3rd, 24th (10:30 am - 1:00 pm) Wednesdays, Oct. 9th, 16th (9:30 am - 12:30 p.m.)

Rector's General Schedule Clergy are granted one day off per week. In recent years I have not been diligent about establishing and doing this. Serving as Rector of two churches it is important that I schedule such times and honor them. As many clergy do I will be taking Monday's off each week with the exception of the one Monday a month when the SMWC vestry meeting is held. On that week I will take off Tuesday. My "day off" schedule will be listed in each month's Good News and will be posted on my office door. Also, as rector of two churches and although the official parish office for both is located at SMWC, I have decided to schedule office hours once a week at Trinity in my Rector's Study there so that I will be more accessible to Trinity parishioners. These office hours will typically fall on two Wednesday mornings and two Thursday mornings each month. The dates for each month will be listed in the monthly Good News and also on the door of my study at Trinity. I hope that all of you at Trinity will feel welcome to drop by for a visit from time to time or schedule a specific time for a visit. If you would like to schedule a visit, it does not have to be only on a date or at a time I am at Trinity. I am also available other days at SMWC or can schedule to meet with you at Trinity on a day other than the regular office days/times listed for Trinity.

Intern’s Insight By: Bernie Schroeder

‘Scripture Then and Now’ On September 29, 2013, I preached about the readings of that day, Amos, 1Timothy and Luke. Each spoke about the Christian response to the wealthy, the poor and the hungry. We often hear that “money is the root of all evil.” What Paul actually said in his letter to Timothy is: “. . . the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” It’s OK to be rich. For the Christian, the issue is why do we pursue wealth and what we will do with that wealth if we achieve it? Scripture (then and now) gives us the answers. First, tithe. Give to God the first fruits of our labors. Second, notice and respond to the poor, the hungry and the sick. This is our Sacred Command the endowment of Christ’s hanging on the Cross. Recall Amos: “Therefore they shall now be the first to go into exile, and the revelry of the loungers shall pass away.”

PS: A great big THANK YOU to all who welcomed my wife, Carol, to our parishes. Carol really enjoyed the Northern Neck and was pleased with our humble cottage on the Stoneham Estate. She will be here for a longer stay in October and,

hopefully, every month thereafter.

Answer to Did You Know: Saint Simon was

one of Jesus' apostles. He was frequently referred to as Simon the Zealot - not because of his participation in the Zealot movement but because of his passion for keeping the Law of Moses. (Remember, there was another Simon whom Jesus renamed Peter.)

CONGRATULATIONS TO TRINITY’S

THOMAS HYDE

Thomas Hyde, son of Tris and Joanna Hyde and brother of Ellie, has been elected by our Region II Council to serve as Region II’s Youth Delegate to the Diocese of Virginia’s Annual Council to be held in January 2014. Thomas is a member of Trinity and has been active there working with the young people’s Sunday program. Thomas is a senior at Lancaster High School where he is in the top of his class and active in both sports and other activities there. His resume is broad, including serving as a docent at Historic Christ Church, working on Eagle Scout status with the Boy Scouts, camp counselor and instructor, a champion wrestler at LHS, etc., etc., etc. His resume is amazing and greatly impressed the delegates at the recent Region II council meeting when they voted unanimously to have him as our Youth Delegate. When you see him next, congratulate him. We are blessed to have him serve in this special role in our Diocese.

Region II Meeting on September 22nd

On Sunday, September 15th, Pauli Dillard and I

attended the Region II meeting as delegates from Trinity and St. Mary’s Whitechapel, respectively. We met at Abingdon Church in White Marsh, just south of Gloucester on Route 17. It is well worth a visit to this very old church that has been beautifully restored after its misuse during the Civil War. Its organ is magnificent and should be heard at one of the concerts given there. On October 20th Abingdon will be having an oyster roast, perhaps a good time to visit. The Very Rev. David May, rector of Grace Church in Kilmarnock, is also Dean of Region II. He reported that at the Clericus meeting held at Trinity earlier this month, the clergy of Region II discussed issues important to rural churches; a topic of great interest to our Bishops. They have been following the restoration of St. Mark’s Beasley, our joint effort with the Rappahannock Tribe and other churches. Youth groups from Region II have visited the Mattaponi reservation, feeling that it was a good learning experience on both sides and worth repeating. Rev. May also mentioned that Grace Church is hoping to have a late afternoon Celtic worship service one Sunday a month. Look for the notices. Two years ago, it was voted at Annual Council that each region in Virginia could elect a youth delegate to attend that meeting. We are pleased and excited that for the 2014 Council, Thomas Hyde from Trinity has been chosen for this honor. Thomas is a fine young man with many attributes to qualify him as a delegate. Congratulations Thomas! Looking ahead: Kingston Parish is have a tag sale where they will be serving Brunswick stew and a BBQ on October 19th.

Unsung Hero Sunday

October 27th

Trinity Church Taking Nominations for “Unsung Hero”

Trinity Episcopal Church in Lancaster Courthouse is taking nominations for the “Unsung Hero” Award. The award will be granted October 27, at 9:30 AM. The Little Church with the Big Heart annually gives the award to that member of the community who lives out the true spirit of Christmas giving all year long. Past recipients range from Earl Tomlin to Dr. Rocky Tingle, a healthcare provider who works tirelessly behind the scenes. In preaching about the award, Reverend Torrence Harman has said, “When an unsung hero walks and moves things feel a little better. These everyday folks generate a little light and stir up hope in those with whom they come into contact. They move in graceful ways in the life of a community. They are giving people – out of some deep sense that that’s their purpose in life.” Said Stan James a member of the Unsung Hero Committee said, “At Trinity we set up this award for that person in the community who exhibits the true spirit of Christmas giving every day of the year.” Please contact Stan James at 436-6519 or Albert Pollard at 761-0775 with your thoughts about possible nominees. Nominations must be submitted by October 11th.

News of Young People at Trinity

A Church Family for Your Young People

Karen Woodruff - [email protected]

Young people of all ages meet every Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Because many of you gave …and bought..…used jewelry, we have raised about $500 for Notre Dame Episcopal School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Thanks to Elisa Barton, Jane Dunaway, Carli Hanback, Ellie Hyde who fought through customers to be at the opening of the yard sale on 9-10! Some of Carli’s friends helped later, as did Sarah Wells Pollard. Most items sold for between $2 and $5!

We all saw shoppers stop and look at the photo display of kids at the school and some added a donation after they read our money was all going to the Bishop of Haiti. Another contribution has been received for $365. (1 student’s tuition/year)

There are more, never before seen, items, and some jewelry which is not costume.

[Look for this for sale at the Ham and Oyster Dinner on Saturday, October 12th.......if someone can be there to sell it. Who can volunteer?]

In March of 2008, Torrence and I met to see if I could fit into the goals she had for young people at Trinity: [These are highlights from my notes.]

1. Plan an every Sunday year-round experience for young people of all ages using Godly Play as a basis. 2. Parents need to be able to worship. 3. Develop deeper spirituality, mission with the Diocese and hospitality. I agreed to be the Director because Trinity honors the spiritual development of young people and has funded that over the years! This “family-size” church can do intergenerational things and the energy is holy…… and the world mission stuns us.

We still need to provide guidance for ongoing development of faith in an Episcopal Church.

Come find out what we do on Sunday mornings and ask questions on Sunday October 13th.

Thanks for all your wonderful participation over these years.

May God continue to make our hearts generous.
