GRRC President Rick Rarick called the meeting to order at 7:12 PM, and a quorum was present. Vice-President David Newell led the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence was observed to hon-or absent companions and those serving in the military. The Sec-retary’s Report, as published in the Gazette, from the August 2011 GMM was approved (Motion by Kurt Borlaug, 2nd by Tom Torborg). Executive Officer Bruce Aune reported that on a recent visit to the range, Laurie and Ed Pekarik found a fan running, windows and doors open, and a coffee pot left on for at least a couple of days (plastic handle started to melt) at the Red Shed. We need to take care of our assets – pick up and detail after yourself! Com-ments were also made to Bruce from one individual about “cer-tain negative feedback from the Board of Directrors.” Duly noted. First readings occurred for Robert Norland, Jeremy Melke and Steve Bedore. Second readings occurred for Mark Petrey, Grant Cermak, Todd Vogel, Jeffrey Shoberg, Bill Hartman, Jay Schmitt (ex-cused from being present), and John Cederberg. The acting Ser-geant at Arms then led the guests and non-members from the room. The Treasurer’s report was made by Rich Williams and approved (Motion by Rick Repovsch, seconded by Lane Wells). The Sec-ond Readings were accepted as a group (Motion by Rick Loye, seconded by John Campbell). The group was accepted as mem-bers of GRRC (Motion by Kim Frick, seconded by Bruce Aune).

Action Arms (Steve Shimek) reported that the last Action Arms event for 2011 will be held the first weekend in October. Rich Williams reported that the All Around Match target sales will now end because there is only one more week of shotgun. There were 78 camps at the Goose Creek Rendezvous, and thanks to Andrew Hornsten for all of the work that he did to make the event happen. Rik Rarick reported for the BPCR that there will be a gong match 10/1-2. There will be no practice during setup on 9/30 due to blow-down tree removal on the range. The long range BPCR match was attended by 18 shooters, attended by some excellent competi-tors from around the US, including the Iron Range.

Camp Ground fees are due and payable for 2011. Pay Steve Marden. Les Eckhardt tendered his resignation as Facility Manager. Kurt Borlaug reported that there is a High Power leg match on

9/25 with a clinic on 9/24 for Guard and Service Members, with a full bore match on 10/9. The Legislative News will now be updated as the web site is again fully functional. Larry Sparks reported that summer Trap is done, with an excel-lent Fun Shoot earlier this evening. Mike Kaluza reported that the Tuesday Night Handgun Prac-tice year finished 8/23, but there will still be open shooting, weather permitting. Mike is seeking approval to incorporate bowling pin shooting into Tuesday night practice. Dave Newell reported that the website is back up and running, and that you should watch your US Mail for the October News-letter for renewal and application forms. Ed Pekarik is currently in the hospital and Rich Williams will send flowers to both Ed and Laurie on behalf of GRRC Good & Welfare.

1) Two people have ignored signs, printed schedules and warn-ings and have used the pistol range when the entire range is closed (one was during Rendezvous). Discussion re: charges deferred to BOD. 2) Gate problems – new parts are in place, but all data did not transfer. Send an e-mail or call Tom Torborg if you have trouble. 3) Tree removal – except for scheduled events we need to shut down the range during the week, for safety reasons. A discus-sion re: accounting for amounts and types of logs removed, and a management plan for the future. The range shut-down deci-sion will be put on the website, Facebook and referred by the Club President to the calling committee. “Loggers” will be asked to remove the dying trees around the Island Shed, and the tree on the roof of the Shotgun Range. 4) Discipline Chairs, please call Dave Newell with special needs due to range conditions. 5) An embroidery volunteer, an organizer, and a contact to do the work is needed for GRRC. Board of Directors Meeting is Monday, October 17, 2011 at 7PM at Kraus-Hartig VFW. The next General Membership Meeting is Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 7PM at Kraus-Hartig VFW. A motion was made by Larry Sparks, second by Lance Wells to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 8:11 p.m. Reported by acting secretary, Steve Marden

By the October general membership meeting the 2011 shooting schedule will be over so all match reports should be turned in before or at the OCTOBER GMM meeting. Having all the match reports in will allow the 2012 budget process to start. Discipline chairs need to turn in operating budget requests no later than the November meeting if you want money for 2012. Operating budgets include targets, supplies, advertising, etc. Do not include range repairs or improvements in your budget re-quest. Please make note of any known needed repairs so we can include them in the maintence and repair budget. We are try-ing over a couple of years to determine the cost of operating and maintaining the range. If repair or maintence costs get hidden in a discipline budget, we can not get an accurate operating cost. I want to thank all the match directors that got their match re-ports to me in a timely and concise manner this year. For those that didn’t- hopefully you will attempt to do better next year. -Rich Williams, Treasurer

Membership 2012 Renewals

This issue of the Gazette contains your 2012 GRRC member-ship renewal form. PLEASE fill in all the blanks so our mem-bership database is up to date and is complete. Pay special attention to the request for phone numbers (your choice of phone number will be the one entered in the GRRC database) and if you want to start receiving the e-version of the Gazette.

Members on the Waiting List: Because you have not yet been offered a membership slot, please ignore the re-newal form. Printing technology cannot separate the mem-bers holding membership cards from those who are on the Waiting List, so everyone in the database receives the Ga-zette. If you are still concerned about the form, just e-mail the Secretary at [email protected] with your questions.

For long standing NRA Life, Benefactor, Patron or EPL mem-bers, you do not need to submit the requested NRA membership information. However, if your NRA membership status has been upgraded in the last 12 months, you WILL have to provide a pho-tocopy of your NRA magazine label or your current NRA member-ship card. Include the address label or photocopy of your NRA membership card with your 2012 membership renewal form.

As a regularly renewing NRA member, you WILL have to provide a mailing label or photocopy of your mailing label from your NRA magazine, or photocopy of your NRA membership card. Either one contains your NRA expiration date. An expi-ration date sometime in 2012 or later qualifies as being a cur-rent NRA member. GRRC is a 100% NRA Club. If your 2012 renewal does not contain your NRA info or has an expiration date prior to January 2012, it will be refused and mailed back.

Membership renewal season runs from October 1, 2011 to De-cember 31, 2011. If you drop off your renewal at any GMM meet-ing up to the December 2011 GMM or the envelope postmark is dated before December 31, 2011, there are no penalties. The penalty time starts January 1, 2012. Renewals dropped off at the January 2012 GMM or postmarked after the December 31, 2011 have a penalty of an additional a 50% of what you would have paid, i.e. Regular payment $150 + 50% penalty = $225.00 and so

on for each level of membership. If your 2012 GRRC membership renewal is not paid by January 31, 2012, you will be dropped from membership and will have to re-apply. When re-applying, you will lose your original membership number and gate combination, lose voting privileges, and will go to the bottom of the Waiting List. For Seniors that means going back on the rolls as a Regular member for two years, plus you will again be collecting Work Day Credits.

If you are an existing Senior member, OR are coming off two years of Regular membership and are 62 or better during 2011, your membership renewal, paid prior to December 31,2011 is $35.00. Work Day Credits are no longer necessary. After December 31, 2011, the membership renewal with penalty added, is $52.50.

For Regulars turning 62 in 2011, you renew as a Senior in 2012. Your 2012 membership renewal, paid prior to December 31, 2011, is $35.00. After December 31, 2011, the membership renewal with penalty added, is $52.50. For Regular members, under age 62 with no Work Day Credits, your 2012 membership renewal, paid prior to December 31, 2011 is $150.00. After December 31, 2011, the membership renewal with penalty added, is $225.00

(Released October 6, 2011)

With dry conditions persisting throughout much of Minnesota, wild-fire agencies have restricted open burning throughout the state. Beginning midnight Oct. 6, by order of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner Tom Landwehr, open burning will be allowed only for special exceptions by the county, state or federal agency having permitting responsi-bilities. Recreational or campfires will only be allowed in a designated fire receptacle designed for such use, provided it is associated with a residence, dwelling, campground or resort. “The decision to restrict burning is not taken lightly,” said Larry Himanga, DNR wildfire prevention coordinator. “Conditions in the state have created a situation where an ignition source could re-sult in extensive damage or injury.” Individual park managers may choose to restrict campfires if they feel campfires are unsafe. The lack of early fall rains, combined with above normal temper-atures and brisk winds, have created conditions more favorable to fires. The lack of precipitation allowed fuels to dry out, making them more susceptible to ignition and increasing the ability of fires to spread. Fire behavior analysts consider several variables when predicting fire danger. The obvious factors like temperature, humidity and wind speed are evaluated along with less obvious factors like the types of fuel available, moisture content of the fuels, the soil mois-ture and potential for future precipitation. Several stations within Minnesota measure fuel moisture each day. Recent measure-ments show that many areas in Minnesota have fuel moistures of less than 20 percent. Low moisture level in large fuels increases the potential for fires to spread. “After the fire is controlled, firefighters must spend additional time ‘mopping up’ the fire to make sure it doesn’t restart,” Himanga said. “When the large fuels ignite, they require extensive time to extinguish and make sure they won’t rekindle later.” Restrictions will remain in place for the foreseeable future. Fire-fighters caution everyone to be extra careful with their outdoor activities. Even recreational or campfires within receptacles and approved burn barrels have the potential to ignite nearby fuels. “Stay with your fire, and have water handy as well as a means of dispensing it,” Himanga said. “We want to protect our resources.”
