Introduction ThebookofMatthewhasalwaysoccupiedapositionofhighesteeminthefaithandlifeofthechurch:

“WhenweturntoMatthew,weturntothebookwhichmaywellbecalledthemostimportantsingledocumentoftheChristianfaith,forinitwehavethefullestandthemostsystematicaccountofthelifeandtheteachingsofJesus."(WilliamBarclay)

Thewritingsoftheearlychurchfathersrevealthatitwasthemostfrequentlyquotedandperhapsthemostwidelyreadgospelduringthefirsttwocenturiesofthechurch'shistory.

Author TheapostolicoriginandcanonicalrankofthegospelofMatthewwereacceptedwithoutadoubtbytheearlychurch(ISBE).Matthew,surnamedLevi,hadbeenatax-collector,oneofJesus'earliestdisciples(Mt9:9;Mk2:14).Hewaschosentobeoneofthetwelveapostles(Mt10:2-3).AcloseassociateofJesusduringHisministry,Matthew'sgospelisafirsthandaccount,unlikeLukewhodependeduponothereyewitnesses(Lk1:1-4).

Date IrenaeussaysitwaswrittenwhenPeterandPaulwerepreachinginRome(AgainstHeresies3.1.1).EusebiusstatesthatthiswasdonewhenMatthewleftPalestineandwenttopreachtoothers(HistoriaEcclesiastica,III,24).ClementofAlexandriasaidthatthepresbyterswhosucceededeachotherfromthebeginningdeclaredthat"thegospelscontainingthegenealogies(MatthewandLuke)werewrittenfirst"(Eusebius,HistoriaEcclesiastica,VI,14).Itistraditionallydatedinthelate50sorearly60sA.D.

Theme ThegospelappearswrittentoJews,designedtoprovethatJesusistheMessianickingofOldTestament(OT)prophecy.ThisisevidencedbyMatthew’sfrequentappealtoOTMessianicprophecies.HequotesfromalmosteverybookintheOT,andtwelvetimesheidentifiesOTpropheciesasfulfilledinthelifeofJesus(Mt1:22;2:15,23;4:14;5:17;8:17;12:17;13:14,35;21:4;27:9).Onecouldthereforesaythatthethemeis:

“Jesus,theKingoftheJews”

Special Characteristics ItisaJewishgospel.We'venoteditsfrequentappealtoOTprophecies.It'sorganizationismostlytopical,asopposedtostrictlychronological(acommonstyleinJewishliterature).ThusitappearstohavebeenwrittenwithaJewishaudienceinmind.

Itisanecclesiasticalgospel.Itistheonlygospelwhichmentionstheword"church".Itforetellsitsbeginning(Mt16:18),anddescribessomeofthelifeinthechurch(Mt18:15-17).Itcontainslengthydiscoursesespeciallybeneficialtothoseinthechurch,suchasthesermononthemount(Mt5-7),themanyparables(Mt13),andtheOlivetdiscourse(Mt

Itisanevangelisticgospel.Itisapreachinggospel,especiallywhencomparedwiththeapostles'preachingfoundinActs.Itexpandsuponthebasicelementsandpointsmadeintheirsermons.Considerthesethemesinapostolicpreaching:
