New Studios In Action!

Art in the Garage has kicked off the new studios by running two ceramics workshops for the five artists employed in the team

– Matthew Perry, Jen Taylor, Leigh Gordon, Jenny McKenzie, and Kylie Ramsey. The first workshop was held on Wednes-

day March 20, with local artist Karen Charlebois. The workshop focused on ‗form‘, with an emphasis on hand-building using

coils and slabs, and drape and slump moulds. We christened our spiffy new slab roller, which makes hand-building using

slabs great fun and very easy, and tried out many of our shiny new tools.

The second workshop will focus on surface decoration and will be run by local ceramicist Janna Ferris. We‘ll look at glazes

and a range of other surface embellishments and techniques.

OPENING WELCOME SPEECH FOR TDS CELEBRATION

―Hello, my name is Suzanne Hartemink, and I am a director on the Board of Tulgeen Group. On behalf of my fellow directors – Kristina Walker, Deb Burrows, Cam Stewart and our Chair, Gae Rheinberger, - I very warmly welcome all of you to our celebration this evening.

I would like to show my respect and acknowledge the traditional custodians of the Land, the Yuin people, of elders past and present, on which this gathering takes place. And I would also like to acknowledge the energy and commitment of the community that built this extraordinary complex, Mumbulla School, in whose hall we are celebrating tonight. And we are celebrating!

Tulgeen has a tumultuous history of ructious changes, dramatic gains and losses, quantum shifts in structures and practices. Not because we don‘t care about our work. More because we very much do care with passion, fierce advocacy and creativity. All attributes that are sometimes hard to structure and regulate!!

The job of the Board of Directors is to create and protect the framework of Tul-geen Group, so the executive managers are able to harness and organise those attributes and direct them to those most in need with the most effect. And throughout Tulgeen‘s history the Board hasn‘t always ―got it right‖.

So we, the Board, say to all of you tonight: THANKYOU !!

Thankyou for staying with us through the ups and downs, even when you haven‘t understood or agreed with the circumstances. Thankyou for being here tonight, willing to accept past mistakes and angst, and trusting in each other to keep aiming for the best we can do by acting in the best way we can be.

Please enjoy our hospitality, enjoy each others‘ company, feel free to ask for and offer any conversation with the

directors.

We look forward to learning more from you in order to deliver more to our clients,

And WE feel this celebration is a new beginning to a stable, professional and harmonious Tulgeen Disability Services. Thank you.‖

Suzanne Hartemink, Director on behalf of the Tulgeen Board

opportunities. The forum provides members and visitors with a platform for information on disability specific issues, events, workshops, support groups and more. Many topics of interest are discussed and the group has regular guest speakers. This forum is very much down to earth, informal and wel-comes everyone from the community. Young Endeavour Youth Scheme

In 2013 STS Young Endeav-our will join a fleet of interna-tional tall ships for festivals in Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney and Auckland. One of the ships currently en route to Australia is STS Lord Nelson, operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust in the United Kingdom.

Lord Nelson is a specially de-signed disability-accessible tall ship, and the first such vessel to sail around the world. Physi-cally disabled people, including wheelchair users, will sail side

by side with able-bodied people every sea-mile of the way. Members of the public can now book berths on voyages from seven to seventeen days duration in Australia during September and October, and a forty-four day voyage from Singapore to Fremantle in June.

More than a day sail, the fully supported voyage programs will give you and your members the opportunity to work as a member of the voyage crew, discovering new skills and making great friends along the way. While aboard you'll meet people from many different walks of life including the experienced professional permanent crew, who will ensure you get the most from your adventure holidays. Regardless of physical ability they will encourage you to get involved in as much or as little sailing as you feel comfortable with. Young Endeavour alumni Sarah Rowsell sailed Lord Nelson in 2011, and said "Our crew consisted of people of all physi-

cal abilities, and our assisted climbs were like any good story: there were tears of joy, peals of laughter, gasps of anticipation, squeals of excitement and numerous rounds of applause as eight of our brave crew mates scaled the fore and main masts. It was a truly awe-inspiring moment of soli-darity as we worked together to assist these brave people aloft, both with and without wheelchairs... I learnt so much about myself, my strengths, my weaknesses, my limitations and my ability to carry on no matter what was thrown at me".

To find out more, including voyage dates and prices, please visit the Jubilee Sailing Trust. We have also been advised that the Sultanate of Oman Bursary Scheme may apply to the voyage from Sydney to Auckland. Requests for Individ-ual bursaries must be made via Sail Training International.

This Healthy Communities Project is an initiative of the Australian Government

NDS is the industry peak body representing all disability organisations in Australia. In preparing the sector for the National Disability insurance Scheme, NDS is keen to hear from the workers of the disability sector and have selected a cross section of disability services to participate. Tulgeen has been selected as one of these organisations. What does this mean? From the 20th May, staff will be asked to fill in an online survey and the data collected will be sent directly to NDS for collation. It will express how each employees view Tul-geen. This information will help NDS understand the diver-sity of the disability workforce in Australia and your answers will assist in building a stronger Tulgeen and disability sec-

tor. You will have the opportunity to confidentially voice your thoughts and opinions about Tulgeen and this will be presented to the Tulgeen by a third party. What do I need to do? All staff are requested to take the survey. If you have a Tul-geen address, information will be emailed directly to you. Just follow the links. If you do not have your own ac-cess, your Executive Manager will provide you with access to a computer to take the survey. It will take 20-30 minutes depending on how quickly you read and type. If you require assistance with navigating a computer, please inform your Manager.
