June Greetings from the UIRA President

This is my last Gray Hawk greeting as president of UIRA. It's been an honor serving as president during the past year. It has been fun and rewarding, and, for the last three months, unusually challenging. My thanks to the Board for their commitment, good work, and unending support of UIRA: Lois Lembke, Chuck Dayton, Diana Harris, Diane Martin, Kris Canfield, Billie Townsend, Bennie Hawkins, Richard Saunders, and the late Dean Borg. I want to especially thank president-elect Sam Cochran and past president Sue Otto for their support and wise counsel. And thanks to EFC reps Carolyn Wanat and Deb Cobb and webmaster Phil Klein. It's been a team effort and I've very much enjoyed working with all of you.

Next year will be challenging as we adapt to our "new normal". We now know that this virus will be with us for some time and like so many other organizations, UIRA will need to make some changes in how we operate, to protect the health and safety of our members and our community. To that end, the Board agrees that it would be best if we not hold in-person meetings or events during the fall semester. Instead, we will offer virtual programs and events and conduct business meetings through Zoom and other platforms. Our program committee is already at work planning virtual programs for fall that will keep us informed and engaged. It won't be the same as meeting in person, but it's the next best thing until we can gather again safely.

In this issue we introduce our slate of new officers and board members for the coming year: David Hamilton (president-elect), Pat Mason-Browne (secretary), David Fitzgerald (treasurer), Billie Townsend and Bennie Hawkins (directors-at-large). In addition, Ed Dove will be serving out the lateDean Borg's term as a director-at-large. Since we can't have an in-person election, we are planning an electronic election in late June. You'll be receiving an email about the election that will include a link to an electronic ballot for you to complete and submit. Board member terms begin July 1.

On a sad and final note, Lucy Choisser, wife of president-elect Sam Cochran, passed away on May 25 from pancreatic cancer. On behalf of the Board and the entire membership, we extend our condolences to Sam, daughter Kate, and their entire family.

Stay safe and well. Peace.--Emil
