*THE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING L: Since Creation, Holy Hopeful One, you have been breaking into our world — letting us know that you are with us and you love us, through Abraham, Moses, Miriam, Deborah, all the priests and prophets of Israel — and yet we chased after things that do not satisfy. With Hope, you stuck with us — you persisted in your love for us — and then, then at the right time you broke into our world in a way never seen before — through your young handmaid Mary you brought the One who would bring the fullness of your kingdom of justice, mercy, and love: our own Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ!! As he grew, your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor; he healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners. By his suffering, death, and resurrection he delivered us from slavery and sin to death, made with us a new covenant by the Spirit, and worked with you to give birth to your church. Therefore, we join our voices, with the saints and sinners of every time and of every place, singing our praises to your heart: P: Holy, holy, holy are you, Lord God of our hearts and souls. Heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, glorify your name forever. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the One whose help is in you. Hosanna in the highest! L: Come to us now, God of Advent, pouring out your Spirit of renewal upon the gifts of bread and wine, transforming them into your merciful grace. Through these simple gifts, transform us from ordinary people into hope-bearing citizens of your kingdom, with our arms and hearts wide open to all. Fill us with the bread of heaven, so we might feed the hungriest of your children; pour the cup of grace into us, so we might overflow with love, a compassionate people with passion for justice. And when your Day finally comes, when we are gathered around your Table in glory, we will sing our thanksgiving through all eternity to God in Community, Holy One. THE LORD’S PRAYER (unison) “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.” WORDS OF INSTITUTION On the night he was arrested, while they were eating, Jesus reached over, took some bread, gave thanks to God. Then he broke it, and gave it to his disciples and told them “Take this and eat it. This is my body, given for you. Do this remembering me and my example.” In the same way he took the cup from the table, and said, “This cup I have here is the new covenant, new hope, which will be sealed in my blood, which I will shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins. Whenever you drink it, remember me.” Jesus tells us boldly: "I am the bread of life. If any of you come to me, you won’t be hungry; if any of you believe in me, you will never be thirsty." Friends, every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the saving death of the risen Lord until he comes — and you experience the grace of God. — service continued on bulletin insert —

*THE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

L: Since Creation, Holy Hopeful One, you have been breaking into our world — letting us know that you are with us and you love us, through Abraham, Moses, Miriam, Deborah, all the priests and prophets of Israel — and yet we chased after things that do not satisfy. Therefore, we join our voices, with the saints and sinners of every time and of every place, singing our praises to your heart:

P: Holy, holy, holy are you, Lord God of our hearts and souls.

Amen.”

WORDS OF INSTITUTION On the night he was arrested, while they were eating, Jesus reached over, took some bread,

gave thanks to God. Then he broke it, and gave it to his disciples and told them “Take this and eat it. This is my body, given for you. Do this remembering me and my example.”

In the same way he took the cup from the table, and said, “This cup I have here is the new covenant, new hope, which will be sealed in my blood, which I will shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins. Whenever you drink it, remember me.”

Jesus tells us boldly: "I am the bread of life. If any of you come to me, you won’t be hungry; if any of you believe in me, you will never be thirsty."

Friends, every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the saving death of the risen Lord until he comes — and you experience the grace of God.

Welcome to Ogden Presbyterian Church Sunday, December 2, 2018 — 1st Sunday of Advent

GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

CAMBRIDGE CHIMES WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS GREETING EACH OTHER Ringing of the Bell

PRELUDE “Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord” ~Knecht Lighting of the Candles

*CALL TO WORSHIP L: Sisters and Brothers, have you seen it, felt it? God is sending Hope to us. P: Well, right now we see hectic lives, crowded stores, darkness and fear in many places. L: Look again, Sisters and Brothers! The spirit of God is coming, moving, bringing Hope. P: We want to place our hope in God, but we are tired and anxious. L: Well, a long time ago, people were tired and anxious. God came to them and gave them

hope. P: May God bring that hope for us today and renew our spirits with Hope!

*LIGHTING OF THE HOPE CANDLE L: The prophet Jeremiah shared God’s hope-filled promise with God’s people: P: Jeremiah said, “the days are surely coming…” when God will rescue us. L: Today we begin our Advent journey, sisters and brothers, when we light candles to mark

our path to God’s chosen One, Jesus. P: We begin by lighting the candle of Hope, for we know that hope in Jesus will light

our lives and help us carry God’s love. L: Even though the world can seem dark and cold, we know that the hope of God is coming! P: Together, we proclaim to each other and the world that, in Jesus, we have hope. L: Let that hope strengthen us each day, each moment; P: Let that hope guide us into the world as we bear God’s love with our hands and

voices.

*HYMN #9 “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) It is easy for us, Lord, to let anger, frustration, and anxiety overshadow our lives. We can’t seem to escape them and their painful effects! We try to find ways to cover them up, but they remain. And in our anxiety, we act out our fear in ways which are not helpful, and often go against the ways you have taught us. We feel pressure to give, and then resentment in giving. We feel the pressure to be present at every event, and then want to run and hide. Help us, Lord. Heal our confused and wounded spirits. Free us again to embrace your Hope. Let us see the many ways in which you are present to us… guiding, healing, loving, encouraging. Forgive us for our fears, and our frustration. Bring us again to your light-filled hope.

(silence is observed for reflection and prayer)

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON L: “The days are coming,” says the prophet Jeremiah, “when all God’s promises will be

fulfilled.” These promises of hope, peace, joy, and love are for you. Receive the hope that God offers to you today through forgiveness.

P: Thanks be to God. Amen.
