Theogony by Hesoid

• This story tells the creation of the gods and the world from the Greek perspective. Before creation, the universe was empty. Gaea, Earth was born cut of the emptiness. She had a son, Uranus. Uranus became the king of the sky and mated with Gaea to produce the Titans. Uranus imprisoned the Titans in Gaea’s body. The youngest Titan, Cronus, attacked Uranus and freed himself and the other Titans, Cronus became the king of the gods.

• Cronus married his sister Rhea and they had six children. Fearing his children would turn against him, Cronus swallowed the first five as they were born. The last child, Zeus, was saved. When Zeus grew up he rescued his siblings from Cronus’ body. Zeus and his siblings then defeated Cronus and the Titans in a war. The victors chose Zeus as their chief god and decided to live on Mount Olympus. They became the most powerful group of gods.
