Creative ways to recycle used tiresContrary to popular belief used tires still have a long and very useful life

long after they are deemed too worn to roll on the road. Some have used

tires to make sculptures, and even jewelery but some great ways for you

to keep tires out of the landfill are:

used tires in the garden old used tires are often used in the garden as planters for flowers, pota-toes, herbs and other plants. there is some debate about chemicals from tires leaching into the soil and being absorbed by the plant. to stay safe only use tires for plants you won’t be eating.Stack a Few to make a compost bin.

Small Lifestyle Changes Can Save You Money & Help Save the Planet

green Pays off!Make Your own Eco-friendly& Cheap Laundry detergentall it takes is a little bit of shopping and a little bit of good old fashioned elbow grease to make a green friendly de-tergent that will clean your clothes just as well as any name brand detergent, minus the harsh chemicals & fra-grances. Best of all it’ll only cost you around ¢2 per load.

Here’s what You’ll Need:• Fel’s naptha Washing Bar soap• Box of Laundry Borax• Box of Washing soda

grate the soap and add one cup of Borax and one cup of washing soda (this is different than baking soda so be sure to read the box). grind it a bit in the blender to make a fine powder mix.

Poof, you’re done! use 2-3 tablespoons per load. Don’t worry, it won’t make suds, but it will clean your clothes better than most popular brands.if you can’t live without a fresh scent, add a few drops of essential oils such as lavender or sage to the rinse cycle and your clothes will have a wonderful scent as well.

kia Introduces ‘ray’ Prototypethe statistics on the Kia ray prototype would give the company an edge in the early stages of the plug-in hybrid market. the Kia ray has a projected fuel mileage of 202 miles per gal-lon using a 78kw electric motor and a 1.4-liter direct-injection engine. Kia also projects that the overall range for the ray is about 746 miles, which is more than sufficient for road trips and a week’s worth of commutes. this hybrid drive system is aided by a lithium-polymer battery that is a step beyond what toyota, Honda and Ford are using at present.

the Kia ray is more remarkable for the auto-maker’s attention to sustainable components and systems. this prototype features solar panels and cells in the roof to absorb sunlight, which is used to power auxiliary systems and lighting. these panels also power a small fan within the cockpit that is activated when the vehicle gets too hot, reducing the use of air conditioning to make passengers more com-fortable. Kia also incorporated infinity audio’s greenedge system into the ray. this sound sys-tem is designed to reduce energy consumption through better acoustics.

How you can care for your pet and the environment

Pets going greenSwap out the junk foodmost conventional pet-food brands you find at the supermarket consist of reconstituted animal by-products, otherwise known as low-grade wastes from the beef and poultry industries—you know, inedibles

you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot fork. in fact, the animals used to make many pet foods are classified as “4-D,” which is really a polite way of saying “Dead, Dy-ing, Diseased, or Down (Disabled).”unless that can of Chicken ‘n liver Delite explicitly states that it contains FDa-certified, food-grade meat, you should know that its contents are considered unfit for human consump-tion—but apparently good enough for your cat or pooch.Since nutrition is one of the key determinants of health and resistance to disease, ideally you’ll want your pet’s chow to be comparable in quality with what we would eat.natural and organic pet foods use meats that are raised in sustainable, humane ways without added drugs or hormones, minimally processed, and preserved with natural substances, such as vitamins C and e. Certified-organic pet foods must meet strict uSDa standards that spell out how ingredients are produced and processed, which means no pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, arti-ficial preservatives, and artificial ingredients.

We recently took the opportunity to enjoy meeting Mr. Begely at the Los angeles eco expo where he was the headline speaker and were able to ask him a few questions.

What would you tell someone that is considering living a more green lifestyle to give them that final push?eD: First, i’d tell them to find areas where we can all agree. instead of focusing on the causes or existence of global climate change, i’d tell them to focus on things like reducing our dependency on mid-east oil, improving national security and our domestic econ-omy, reducing air pollution in our cities, and putting money back in our pockets. if we can agree on those things, then i’ve got some stuff that works – especially the part about putting money back in your pocket. i’ve been doing things that are quote-unquote good for the environment for 40 years, and it’s also been really good for my bottom line. that’s usually the best way to get people in the door.

What first inspired your interest in living a more eco-friendly lifestyle?

eD: it was 1970 and the first earth Day. my father ed Begley, a wonderful man and a terrific actor, had just passed away. He always told me “eddie, don’t tell people what you’re going to do, show them by doing it.” He was the son of irish immigrants and what i call ‘a conservative that liked to conserve.’ He had grown up in the great depression, so he saved tinfoil and string and turned out the lights and did things people did back then. He was an early environmentalist even though we didn’t call him that back then. i had been a cub scout and then a boy scout, so i had the opportu-nity to spend time out in nature as a young boy – and i liked it. i had grown up in l.a. in the 50s and 60s to horrible, choking smog in the San Fernando valley. By 1970 i had had a belly full of the smog. So, to honor my father and the first earth Day, i started recycling,

composting, riding a bike, taking public transportation, using biodegradable soaps and detergents, eating a vegetarian diet and other cheap and easy things that i could afford as a struggling young actor. and to my surprise, i started saving money…so i did more…

What is one tip you would give someone as their first step towards living green?eD: get out of your car – one day a month, a day a week, whatever you can. walk, ride your bike, take public transportation – but try and get out of that car. it’s a great first step that (at $3.00 a gallon) will hit your wallet with instant payback.

grey water recyclingthe average four person single family home in a temperate climate uses over 20,000 gallons of wa-ter monthly. over half of which is used for land-scape irrigation; think about that, clean drinking water being sprayed on dirt! the same family uses nearly 3,000 gallons of water per month to flush toilets; talk about good water going after bad! a grey water recycling system from grey water re-cycling systems, will reduce that families municipal water usage by 50% to 70% with a similar reduc-tion in their water bill. of greater importance is the fact the family is doing their utmost to pre-serve one of our most important natural resources. when using this type of system, water becomes a reusable asset rather than a one time commodity. take long relaxing showers without feeling guilty by knowing the water you’re using today will ir-

rigate your lawn and garden tomorrow. think of the electricity and other resources saved be-cause that water is not being processed at the local sewer treatment plant.for more information go to:www.reusegreywater.com

How the Environmental Movement is Effecting Sports

green Sports

and the list goes on. a team slogan is "go green." the double meaning is intentional.the effort was begun in 2003 by the team's owners, Jeffrey and Christina weiss lurie, both former Holly-wood producers who bought the eagles in 1994."game days have a huge environmental impact consid-ering traffic, trash, energy and material consumption, and water use," said Christina lurie when they made the effort public this year.

the Eagles went greenit's only a coincidence that the Philadelphia eagles wear green jerseys.the eagles have quietly become the most environmen-tally friendly team in the national Football league, and perhaps in all of major league sports.when the lights come on for an eagles game at lin-coln Financial Field, 30 percent of the power comes from so-called clean sources, such as wind power and methane reclaimed from landfills.when the eagles fly to an away game, their organiza-tion plants trees in the Philadelphia area to make up for the carbon dioxide emitted by the team's plane.if you go get a beer at halftime, you'll notice recy-cling bins every 46 feet on the concourse. why that distance? Because a study showed people will actually walk that distance to drop off a plastic cup for recy-cling; any further, and the cups will just be dumped with regular trash.the team's tickets are printed on recycled paper. So are the programs. even the machine that vacuums the field after the game runs on biodiesel.
