OUR PARISH MISSION

St. Gregory the Great

Mission Statement

St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live.

ST. GREGORY HELPING HANDS The mission of our St. Gregory Helping Hands ministry is to provide parishioners and people living in our neighborhood with emergency financial or material assistance. It will also provide financial support for local organizations that offer assistance to people in need such as Care for Real or the Women’s Center.

PLEASE CONSIDER SIGNING UP FOR GIVE CENTRAL GiveCentral is a method of electronic giving that guarantees us a steady income whether you are able to attend Mass any given weekend or not. It is safe. You can sign up for GiveCentral on the home page of our parish web site at www.stgregory.net, or you can contact John Miaso at the Parish Center (773-561-3546), and she can enroll you or help you with the pro-cess if you have any questions or difficulties.

PARISH COMMUNITY/ EVENTS/INFORMATION

MEET THE FRIARS Fr. Bob Cook, OFM Conv.

I am originally from Central Massachusetts and am the second of three children (my parents are deceased). I graduated from the College of the Holy Cross, Boston University School of Law,

Washington Theological Union, and Sacred Heart School of Theology. After working as an attorney in a Boston law firm, I joined the Conventual Franciscans in 1995 and was a brother until being ordained to the priesthood in 2010. As a friar, my ministries have included Vice President of Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology, Administrator of Marytown: The National Shrine of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Administrator of Saint Nicholas Parish in Evanston, Director of Carrollton Hall Catholic historical site (Ellicot City, MD), Provincial Secretary and staff attorney for Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement program. My hobbies include guitars and fantasy baseball but I enjoy being a Franciscan priest most of

all. I am very excited to be serving at this new, combined parish and look forward to learning more about the people of St. Gregory.

Fr. Arturo Felix, OFM Conv. I was born in 1988 and raised in Southern California. As the oldest of four children (two sisters and one brother),

I was the first in my family for many things. From the age of 14, I felt called to the priesthood, and after high school, I entered the seminary for the Diocese of San Bernardino, California, my home diocese. I studied for the Diocese of San Bernardino for four years, which solidified my friendship with a number of priests in the Diocese of San Bernardino. Yet, during my seminary formation, I felt called to a deeper, more radical way of following Christ. During my philosophical studies at St. Joseph College Seminary, here in Chicago at Loyola University

Chicago, I came into contact with the Conventual Franciscans. After two years of serious discernment while fin-ishing my philosophical studies, I entered the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. I have been with the Franciscans since 2010. I was ordained a priest in June of 2016. I hope to meet and get to know all of you as you have learned

a little about me. Keep us in your prayers as we continue to serve you.

Peace and all Good, Fr. Arturo Felix, OFM Conv.

Fr. Robert Melnick, OFM Conv. I grew up in Columbus, Ohio and in 1984, I joined the Conventual Franciscans in Chicago. I received

a BS in Social Work from Loyola University, a Master of Divinity from Catholic Theological Union, and a Doctor of Ministry from the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein. I solemnly professed in 1990 and was ordained in 1997, I have served the community as a formation director, parish priest, shrine rector, and I am currently the treasurer of St. Bonaventure Province in Chicago. I have minis-tered with the friars in Assisi, Rome, Rockford, South Bend, and Sydney, Australia. I now live at St. Francis of Assisi Friary where I assist with sacramental ministry at the combined parish of St. Ita, St.

Thomas of Canterbury, and St. Gregory the Great.

Fr. Simon Muriithi Minyati, OFM Conv. My name is Fr. Simon Minyati from Kenya, eastern part of Africa. I am a Conventual Franciscan Friar from the St.

Francis of Assisi Province of Kenya. The Franciscan Mission in Kenya was founded in 1984 by the Polish Missionaries from the St. Maximilian Kolbe Province, Gdansk in Poland. We were ordained, two of us, in 2000;

the first Kenyan priests and the first fruits of the Polish Missionaries in Kenya. After my ordination, I worked for 2 years as an Associate Pastor in one of our Parishes. I was sent to Rome to do formation studies from 2002 to 2005.

From 2006 to 2009, I was appointed Rector of our Franciscan House of Studies; an international House of Formation for Conventual Franciscan students from all over Africa. I have worked in other capacities as Novice

Director in Ghana, Retreat Director (2010-2012) and as Pastor (2012-2014). I first came to the US in 2014 for a sabbatical year in Marytown. I returned to Kenya, as the appointed Pastor of our newest Parish in the coastal

region of Mombasa from 2016 until January 2019. I joined Saint Ita Church in February 2019. I must say, to work in the American setting, is indeed a whole new experience to me. It is both enriching as it is challenging. To the

members of St. Gregory, we are happy to have you, we give you a Franciscan embrace.

Special thanks to our Knights of Columbus and Taste of Summer crew for building tents to protect

our St. Thomas of Canterbury food pantry patrons during the winter months. Through a grant, we are able to purchase outdoor heaters to provide warmth

in the tents.

Superintendent of schools, Dr. Jim Rigg, was on hand to present our principal, Christine Boyd, with Archdiocese of Chicago Civitate Dei award for excellence in leadership in Catholic education. Congratulations Christine! Thank you for your commitment to the mission of the church

and Catholic education.

Santa Teresita

Father Claudio Diaz was at St. Ita the annual Mass in honor of Santa Teresita. Begun nearly 50 years ago by Mercedes Lopez in thanksgiving for her family’s escape

from Cuba, it has become a St. Ita parish October tradition.

Writer-Director Lucia Mauro (winner of the Vatican Film Festival) will

participate in a Q&A with Sister Bridget Zanin, MSC, Director of Chicago's National Shrine of St. Frances Xaiver Cabrini; composer Enzo De Rosa; and

Gabriella Cabrini, a descendant of the Saint based in Italy. Viewers can choose to watch the film in English, Italian, Spanish, Polish or French. Individual tick-

ets are $10, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the parish. Filmed in Italy and Chicago in 2017—the 100th anniversary year of Mother

Cabrini’s passing to eternal life-Frances Xavier Cabrini: The People’s Saint-honors the great humanitarian and Patron Saint of Immigrants, who ministered to the

newly arrived Italian immigrants at the turn of the 20th Century. Mother Cabrini founded schools, orphanages & hospitals around the world. The film

shows her global reach and highlights individuals-including thriving immigrant faith communities—living her message today.

Fun fact, part of it was filmed at St. Ita!
