Savor the taste of our previous brew In the previous passage, verses 17-19, the LORD builds on the divine momentum of the previous passage, first, from a cosmic perspective in v.17, and then, to a Zionist viewpoint in verses 18-19. 17 The whole chapter turns on this verse where the Creator declares that He is about to recreate the universe in order to keep His word to the faithful remnant. As Gen. 1:1 reported, “In beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,” for Adam and his descendants, so now v.17 predicts, “I am creating new heavens and a new earth” for Messiah (the second Adam) and His descendants. The plan of salvation is a work of recreation that calls for a whole new order of creation, including a new race of men and women fashioned after their new sire, the second Adam. In Isa. 51:6 the LORD ordered Israel: “Look up to the skies above, and gaze down on the earth below. For the skies will disappear like smoke, and the earth will wear out like a piece of clothing. The people of the earth will die like flies, but my salvation lasts forever. My righteous rule will never end.” Considering what the LORD has promised in verses 1-16 of this chapter, as the old order will disappear with the destruction of the rest, so, a new one will replace it as the everlasting home of the remnant. The second thought, “and no one will even think about the old ones anymore,” suggests the idea of replacement as it also promotes the concept of a completely new beginning. John develops this image of leaving the past behind when he envisions: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone” in Rev 21:1. To underscore the point he adds, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever” (Rev. 21:4). Unlike Lot’s wife, those who make it to the Kingdom will fulfill Isaiah’s prediction and never look back. Savor the taste of our previous brew

In the previous passage, verses 17-19, the LORD builds on the divine momentum of the previous passage, first, from a cosmic perspective in v.17, and then, to a Zionist viewpoint in verses 18-19.

18 The whole chapter turns on this verse where the Creator declares that He is about to recreate the universe in order to keep His word to the faithful remnant.

Be glad*; brighten up and be cheerful

rejoice* forever* dance because you’re so happy and celebrate perpetually, indefinitely, without end

in my creation*! in me and what I do

And look*! Listen up, again.

I will create* Jerusalem the Eternal one will bring a brand new Jerusalem into existence

as a place of happiness*. To be a whole new experience of joy

Her people will be a source* of joy*. The people who live there will cause others great pleasure.

19 The same people who serve as a fountain of cheer for others will also give God a reason to celebrate. Even He will escape the sorrows of the past when He makes Jerusalem, new. The expressions, “I will rejoice over Jerusalem,” and “delight in my people,” seem to separate the city from its inhabitants, but actually point symbolically to the future that treats the city as God’s final residence and its citizens as His eternal companions. On numerous occasions, the OT personifies Jerusalem with words like, “her” in “her people” as though it were a person, so Bible writers can speak of the place and its people as inseparable. John confirms this in Rev. 21:3 when he hears: “a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.” As Isaiah attaches the observation, “And the sound of weeping and crying will be heard in it no more,” to his prophecy of what John heard, so John adds in the very next verse, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever” (Rev. 21:4). More than a reversal of their up and down past, God lays out a future that is irreversibly new for the people He prepares to spend eternity with Him.

I will rejoice* over Jerusalem I (the Eternal One) will do a happy dance because of the New Jerusalem (my future bride)

and plus,

delight* in my people. brighten up and celebrate my flock (their happiness is my joy)

Let us pour you a fresh cup, ground verse-by-verse from today’s passage

And On top of that, or, what’s more

the sound of weeping* the noisy call, or cry of sad dripping tears,

and plus

crying* the outcry of high-pitched, piercing shrieks

will be heard* in it no more*. will no longer demand attention in Jerusalem.

In today’s passage, verses 20-25, the LORD continues to make the case for re-creation by painting a picture of replacement–the end of what used to be and the start of something new–rather than restoration for the future of the remnant. So, please open your Bibles to Isaiah Chapter 65, and let me pour you a hot CuppaJesus from today’s brew, starting with v.20.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR TODAY Here are the main items in the text that will lead you to its understanding.

Pay careful attention to every item as you follow today’s devotional in your study Bible. We have already grouped them by colors in “Today’s Text,” so you can follow the writer's flow of thought for yourself. Capture and grasp what he is trying to tell you with matching color pencils to draw lines connecting items to others in the same color-family, and a black pencil to cross-link items from different color-families that still have something to do with one another. Use circles, boxes, triangles, etc. to identify topics and themes (triangles, for instance, might represent the Trinity). Also mark with asterisks, etc., the ones you need to look up later for more information or greater details.

TODAY’S TEXT 20 “No longer will babies die when only a few days old. No longer will adults die before they have lived a full life. No longer will people be considered old at one hundred! Only the cursed will die that young!

21 In those days people will live in the houses they build and eat the fruit of their own vineyards.

22 Unlike the past, invaders will not take their houses and confiscate their vineyards. For my people will live as long as trees, and my chosen ones will have time to enjoy their hard-won gains.

23 They will not work in vain, and their children will not be doomed to misfortune. For they are people blessed by the LORD, and their children, too, will be blessed.

24 I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!

25 The wolf and the lamb will feed together. The lion will eat hay like a cow. But the snakes will eat dust. In those days no one will be hurt or destroyed on my holy mountain. I, the LORD, have spoken!”
