· Mai Khao BeachNorth of the airport is a beach to really get away from it all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stunning plus it’s almost empty! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are ve deep on Patong.· Nai Yang BeachJust south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scattering of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right on the beach? This is your spot.· Nai Thon BeachA little further south from Nai Yang is Nai Thon, possessing a similar feel to its big brother, Nai Thon has long been a favorite with the regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay nestled at the foot of high hills has a ne strip of sand and a handful of pleasant eateries are situated just off the beach.· Layan Beach This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim it’s not the place to go.

· Bang Tao BeachBang Tao Beach has in recent years seen a lot of development with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong currents. At the northern end of the beach the coral creates good opportunities for snorkeling.· Surin Beach Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with ne white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsur ng. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach.· Laem Singh BeachLaem Singh Beach is small and very popular; it is located between Surin and Kamala. To reach the beach you need to walk down a short, rocky trail that is clearly signposted. If you are lucky and it’s not too crowded then Leam Sing Beach is absolutely stunning.· Kamala BeachKamala is a 3-kilometer long beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast which has undergone recent developments to its main street, but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the beach lies a growing village with two distinct

communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims further back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range.· Patong Beach The most famous beach on the island is the center of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels. Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft sands and warm clear water. But right behind the beach is the hustle and bustle at the center of Phuket’s tourism business. Here the hotels, restaurants, entertainment and bar areas, street bazaars and shops are crammed in a colorful and lively mix that typi es a Thai tourist beach town.

· Paradise BeachParadise Beach is a little beach just 5 minutes south of Patong. To get there follow a small cement road up to the hill through the jungle. It is a nice small beach with white, soft sand and large rocks anking either side.· Karon Beach Karon is another of the beautiful, west-coast beaches that have made Phuket famous. This beach is the rst main stop south of Patong, and is separated from Patong by a large headland. A quick 10 minute drive connects the two. · Kata BeachKata is certainly one of the most beautiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crystal clear waters and soft coral offers excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach.· Kata Noi BeachJust south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is superb for snorkeling as many sh inhabit the rocks and corals along the headland to the south.· Ao Sane BeachAo Sane beach is a small bay and is located to the north of Nai Harn beach. To get to this beach you need to go through The Royal Phuket Yacht Club. Ao Sane is a very small, rocky beach but it is peaceful.

· Nai Harn Beach Nai Harn is one of the more isolated beaches, nestled at the southern tip of the island in a bay de ned by headlands and islets. The beach is backed by the green of Casuarina trees and coconut palms, acting as shade for the restaurants that now line the beach.· Ao Yon BeachAo Yon is another peaceful beach ideally suited for watching the sunset. It is located near Cape Panwa, 10km from Phuket Town. Although quiet with beautiful emerald sea this beach is not really suitable for bathing or relaxing as the bay is usually full of boats and yachts.

Getting to know

of Kata Hot YogaOverlooking Kata Beach there’s a sanctuary of yogic good health and exercise called Kata Hot Yoga. Overseeing activities is the owner, an inspirational Dutch yogi named Govert, who we had the pleasure of meeting. How did you become a Yogi in Phuket?I grew up in Holland and until a few years ago made my career as a carpenter working in construction in many different countries. I then became a building contractor with as many as 24 laborers working for me, but I felt the toll this kind of work was taking on my body which always seemed to ache. I did a yoga class in Amsterdam and found it really relieved my body aches, so I started to get interested in the whole yogic process. I resolved to undertake a teacher training certificate in yoga in Hawaii which was very tough, but after graduating I decided I would like to open a yoga studio. I had visited Phuket since I was an 18 year old back-packer and many times subsequently and so I arrived about ve years ago after my yoga training and looked around for a good location.I found this space above Kata Beach Road and overlooking Kata beach, which was ideal for me as I love the water and wanted to be close to the sea. I launched Kata Hot Yoga ve years ago and it was successful pretty much from day one. We appeal to both local residents and many visiting tourists as well. We seem to span cultures, countries and nationalities and a lot of local Thais also take the classes and have become regulars. Also we have a great location and offer bungalow accommodation to those who want to combine Hot Yoga practice with a beachside holiday. So, I think all of this has contributed to our success.

What are the bene ts of Hot Yoga practice?I think yoga is something that everyone should try. For those that practice it regularly, the results manifest a new, fresh and improved version of yourself. Speci cally, Hot Yoga refers to yoga exercises performed in a room heated to around 40 degrees Centigrade and high in humidity. The term “Hot Yoga” is used to describe a yoga style that use heat to increase the individual’s exibility in the poses. It is a 90 minute open-eyed meditation which calms the mind and is a good work out for the body, while making it more exible as well.At the same time your organs are ushed with fresh blood thereby sweating out toxins in a cleansing process. It also makes you breath in the right way, which complements the exercises, leading to all round healthfulness.

What sort of people come to Hot Yoga? All sorts of people participate from t thiathletes and Muay Thai trainers through to people wanting to lose weight and detox. Also those recovering from injury and operations, through to ordinary people wanting to look good and stay healthy. Age is no barrier to joining and we also have many visiting and returning teachers from many countries that come and stay and give classes for us. I personally teach classes every day and now I feel healthy and pain free as a part of my life.

What sort of people come to Hot Yoga?

Certainly Govert is an inspiring example of what can be achieved through regular Hot Yoga practice which strongly suggests we should all give it a try.

...there was TwinpalmsTwinpalms is located close to the sands of gorgeous Surin Beach and adjacent to “Millionaire’s Mile” and reigns supreme as one of Phuket’s most fashionable resorts. In many ways it is the epicenter and social barometer of all things trendy in Phuket. It’s as if on the Phuket social scene Twinpalms leads and then the rest of the island falls into line and tries to keep up.

Certainly it was this way with the bringing of a revolution to Phuket’s tranquil Sundays in the form of something called “doing brunch”.

When it was rst introduced to Phuket in the early “naughties” this latest social and gustatory phenomenon was as much about dressing up in one’s nest and going out to “see and be seen” with the island’s glitterati, as it was with the grazing on the bounteous buffet of wonderful foods.

Twinpalms brunches soon became legendary as “THE” place for Phuket’s high rollers to partake in Sunday’s longest, most languorous indulgence in ne food and wine. If that weren’t enough, the lovely beach and the resort’s Catch Beach Club are just a short canter away and so Sunday afternoons easily segue onto the sands and continue into the sunset hours.

As you wander into the relaxed open space that is the Oriental Spoon Restaurant you’ll see the limpid pools of water, hear the sophisticated background sounds, see the lovely smiling staff and realize this is going to be a long, lovely Sunday in Heaven. Just grab a complimentary Bloody Mary to dispel Saturday night’s cobwebs and you’re away.

The abundant spread of crab, clams, lobsters and imported oysters on ice are amazing and a good place to start. The sushi and sashimi are so fresh and tasty that they also have to be savored. Then there are the brimming salads, both

pre-mixed and with the basic materials for the DIY enthusiast with all sorts of sauces and… Oh Joy!….. artichokes and sun-dried tomatoes to die for.

The famous Swiss Raclette cheese is a specialty that you won’t want to miss. Try it with meted with fresh cut ham and melon for a superb starter.

A successful Twinpalms brunching experience takes careful planning and judicious timing. There is so much on offer and much of the “I-can-resist-anything -except-temptation” ingredients are in the nal furlongs, so you MUST pace yourself.

Think about the chocolate fountain with fresh berries and fruits and the famous crème brûlée, or traditional Thai mangoes and sticky rice and a panoply of ice-creams and you’ll soon realize why the hardened Twinpalms bruncher plans the afternoon with strict precision.

And it’s not over yet, on offer is one of Phuket’s nest selections of cheeses with breads, biscuits and grapes and heaven-sent complementary Taylor’s Port just to confirm that you’ve discovered Nirvana.

Most Sundays there won’t be a single table free so advanced booking is certainly recommended.

The Twinpalms brunch costs 3,490 baht++ per person, including a bottle of champagne per couple. Or 1,490 baht++ per person, including a bottle of wine per couple. Or 1,190 baht per person, for brunch alone.

Brunch upon a time....

Phuket celebrates the original Thai New Year with much of the same elan as the rest of the country.Traditionally, there was only one ‘New Year’ in Thailand. Songkran, the start of the Buddhist year, is still celebrated between the 13th - 15th April, at the height of the hot season. Translated literally as “the passing of”, Songkran marks the beginning of the solar calendar, when the sun passes from the sign of Taurus into Aries. In the rural community - and until recently Thailand was almost entirely an agricultural society - this has been a perfect time to take a break from the business of earning a living. The rice harvest is in, and replanting has to await the coming of the rains. For centuries, this has presented an opportunity for young men and women to meet socially, turning the lull in the seasonal cycle of labor to matters of courtship. It is a time of joy, and Thais have long marked the occasion by making merit - by offering food to monks and by releasing caged birds, turtles, and sh.The latter custom had its origins where villagers would collect

sh stranded in the pools left as the ponds and canals dried up in the searing heat, saving

them ’till Songkran for release into the river. Not only was this a means of making merit,

it served as an effective conservationist program. You still see vendors offering

these creatures for release in many parts of Bangkok as well as in rural areas,

pyramids of tiny wooden cages lled with twittering birds, metal

tanks swimming with turtles, eels, and sh.

Water is a key element in the festival. Buddha images, both public and private,

are washed with lustral water, while the whole

house is given an especially thorough

cleaning. The idea seems to be to start the New Year fresh and clean both in body and spirit. Most noticeable to the casual visitor are the water ghts. Thais and foreigners alike spend the days dousing each other (and any unlucky bystanders) with water - a ne and refreshing experience, given the prevailing weather. The custom of throwing water is probably in part only an exuberant spillover of the tradition of pouring lustral waterover the hands of monks and respected elders. More basically, however, the return of water to the parched soil is an expression of hope and anticipation, an invitation to the cooling, life-giving rainy season to come. This practice migrated long ago to Thailand from India by way of Burma. It thus came rst to Chiang Mai, where it is still practiced with special enthusiasm. In those early days, there was little communication and no easy links between Chiang Mai and Bangkok, and the water-throwing took a long time to reach the capital. When it did, though, it was embraced with such abandon that the police of cially had to ban it as a traf c hazard. The prohibition has never really taken hold and today if you ride a Bangkok bus during Songkran you must still be prepared for a drenching. Along the streets you nd gleeful knots of people heaving buckets of water at any passing vehicle. If you’re driving, keep your windows closed. If you’re on foot you may get ambushed by a careening tuk-tuk jammed full of young revellers armed with pails of water. It’s all in the spirit of good fellowship and people are pleased to receive as good as they give out. Have fun!

Honey is a sweet food which has a long history of human consumption. However researchers are turning up abundant new evidence of honey’s wide range of medical bene ts, from helping cure conjunctivitis in the eyes, to athlete’s foot. Honey’s powerful healing attributes have been used for thousands of years and have been known to promote the healing of cuts, and curing of ailments and diseases for many generations.

Honey is made by bees using nectar collected from owers and there are many different varieties depending upon the t ype of bee, or insect which does the collecting and the owers from which the nectar is gathered. Honey bees transform nectar into honey by a process of regurgitation and evaporation and then store it as a primary food source in wax honeycombs inside the beehive. Honey gets its sweetness from the mono-saccharides, fructose and glucose and has approximately the same relative sweetness as granulated sugar.

One of the greatest fascinations of working with honey is learning about all the different oral

varieties, plus their appearance and quality and then experimenting with each to

discern their unique taste and avor. An easy way to detect natural honey is by keeping it in a glass bottle and leaving it for a while, until you see the pollen oat-

ing on the top.

Honey has a far wider range of bene ts than most people appreciate including antiseptic, antioxidant, vitamin B and C, phosphorus, calcium, minerals and amino acid properties.

Health Applications of Honey• Mix three teaspoons of raw organic

honey, with three teaspoons of raw organic apple cider vinegar and mix with a glass of water and drink every morning, to help stimulate your entire system and balance your body and weight.

• Honey, papaya, banana, orange, yoghurt and raisins when mixed together, make an excellent breakfast.

• For insomnia, a spoonful of honey mixed with warm water, or hot milk is a miracle antidote that helps you have a good night’s sleep. It is even more powerful if you also meditate before going to bed.

• Honey is a natural cleanser which exfoliates skin from the inside to bring out radiant and clear skin on the outside. Blend pure honey with banana and apply to your face for 10 – 15 minutes. It works wonders for ironing out ne lines and lightening the skin.

• Honey is a great conditioner for your hair. Mix honey with olive oil and apply this mix onto well-shampooed hair. Leave it on for 3- 5 minutes then wash off to experience very shiny and silky tresses in a jiffy.

These are just a few of the many health and beauty bene ts of honey, so make sure to try out these amazing uses and very soon you will want to make honey an integral part of your ongoing beauty regimen.

best kept hair care secret...best kept hair care secret...I’m sure that every girl has dreamt of the day that she can wash their hair and simply leave the house without a good old fashioned blow-dry whilst still boasting of fabulous looking hair. Ladies, that day is today with the spectacular Brazilian Blowout and here is how I came to know about Phuket’s best kept hair care secret.

Phuket’sPhuket’s

Last week, I was lucky enough to visit Senses Health & Beauty Clinique for a brand new treatment and I was excited to say the least after hearing all the latest gossip from the professionals in the industry.

But what exactly is the Brazilian Blowout? I’m sure I’m not the rst girl to ask this puzzling question, despite the rave reviews of fantastic long-lasting, faultless results. Well according to my best friend Google – the Brazilian is the only professional smoothing treatment that gives you smooth, shiny and frizz – free hair without using any

potent chemicals like those used in other straightening and smoothing methods.

So how long do these organic results last? Well my in-depth research discovered that the results can last between 10 and 12 weeks and I’m pleased to say I can see no loss in quality to this day. Think of the results you’ve experienced from the best deep conditioner you’ve ever used and then multiple by three months and you’ll be close to the predicted quality found with the Brazilian Blowout.

As I arrived, I was introduced to Kitty, who was to be my hair specialist for the following hours. We began the process and I was rst invited to the shampoo bowl where I was treated to a special shampoo and conditioner wash that is renowned at the Senses Health & Beauty Clinique for being of the highest standard.

With my frizzy and dried hair, I was nally introduced to the highly anticipated treatment. After being pleasantly surprised that I could detect no potent chemicals in the appearance or scent, the ever skillful and deft hands of Kitty, started to comb the Brazilian Blowout Professional Treatment through each section of my hair from root to tip lightly coating each section with the solution.

Page 45: The Guide Phuket April 2014

It was hard for me to believe this could actually do anything, bene cial or otherwise to the maintenance and quality of my hair, but Kitty explained that the solution surrounded each hair strand with protective protein layers to smooth and support each hair cuticle. She then continued to explain the additional bene ts of the Brazilian Blowout.

The well-known techniques of thermal reconditioning or Japanese straightening from the US are currently embroiled in controversy as they contain formaldehyde to preserve that sleek tame nish, a strong chemical known to cause long-lasting damage to hair. Compared with this product, the Senses Health & Beauty Clinique offers a professional smoothing treatment containing amino acids plus protein derived from natural ingredients rich in amino acid such as acai berry, camu camu and annatto seeds.

The treatment is formaldehyde-free. It creates a protein layer around the hair strand to protect and improve the health of hair. The treatment’s aim is to coat the hair cuticles and ll in the gaps and breakages caused by chemical treatments, without changing the bonds of the hair. It is not a straightening treatment. As the hair cuticles smooth out, the hair appears silkier and very curly hair becomes wavy, while already wavy hair transforms to smooth and manageable.

After the treatment, my hair remained thicker, more polished and a whole lot healthier to the touch and appearance.

The shine is unbelievable and with the saran-wrap effect, these results I believe will ensure hair dryer hibernation for at least two months. My straighter, more manageable hair will probably enjoy this new freedom for four months. Since enjoying the treatment at Senses Health & Beauty Clinique it has been two weeks and my hair still looks and feels incredible.

Each island is only a short distance from the next and so during low tide you can wade to a neighboring island, many with sandy beaches and crystal clear water and majestic limestone cliffs rising straight from the clear waters of the sea. Ao Nang has several famous beaches including East Rai Le, West Rai Le and Phra Nang cave which stretches to the foot of a prominent limestone range.

Noppharat Thara BeachJust 20 km west of Krabi and three miles long, this beach is lined with majestic Casuarina trees and is in fact part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Marine Park and is the location of the Park headquarters. As with Ao Nang, it’s possible to reach other islands in the bay on foot during low tides.

Railay BeachThis beach is generally divided into two sections, east and west. West Railey provides visitors with peace and quiet as it is a broad sandy beach with fewer facilities than Ao Nang. East Railey which lies across the peninsula from West Railey is different from other beaches in the area

as it could actually be classi ed as a mud at, especially during low tide. The main attraction for visitors to Railey Beach is the adrenaline pumping activity of cliff climbing. The limestone cliffs on the huge headland between East of Railey Beach and Phra Nang cave, as well as other nearby islands provide world-class rock climbing facilities against a stunning backdrop of the sea with approximately 700 routes of mid to high dif cult rating.

Pra Nang BeachConnected to Railay by a small path, Phra Nang is on the outermost headland, backed by limestone cliffs soaring above the beach. At the bottom of the cliff lies the Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok where local shermen leave offerings for good fortune.

Klong Muang Beach/TubkaakKrabi’s latest beach destination, Muang Klong boasts both 5-star and boutique hotels like the Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort and offers powderwhite sand and safe swimming.

The Lanta Island Group About 53 islands are included in this group situated at the southern limit of Krabi Province. Koh Lanta Yai is the largest and is both a traveler’s and up-market vacationer’s paradise and is as yet relatively undeveloped. You can get to Lanta on the regular ferry from Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town. The prime attractions are its long beaches, clear water, laid back atmosphere and scuda diver’s paradise where most of the nicest beaches and tourist attractions are located.

The Phi Phi IslandsKnown for phenomenal natural beauty, particularly the famous twin bays with their the curving beaches upon which lies the largest town. Phi Phi islands are some of the most beautiful in the world with superb scenery, silvery sand beaches and Emerald green seas with coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. Hardly two hours journey by boat from Ao Nang, the twin islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh provide excellent accommodation options and are known as major “party islands.”

Poda IslandsSituated south of Ao Nang, 8 Kilometers offshore, Koh Poda or Poda Group Islands are fringed by clear waters and offer white sandy beaches, as well as, pristine coral reefs. These islands are not affected so much by the monsoon therefore are year-round attractions and an excellent place for shing. Poda island with white sand beaches and clear turquoise seawater abounded with schools of colorful sh.
