The hÅboist - The official paper of EYP FI Turku Regional Session 20102 The hÅboist- The official paper of EYP FI Turku Regional Session 2010 3

At the end of the session, in the final issue of the hÅboist, the press team would like to express some thank yous. First of all, a big thank you to the organisers, who so diligently attended for our needs; be it apples, printers, flipcharts, those precious Hesburger coffee mugs, alternative wake-up calls, French language, mock resolution, coffee, smiles, open doors, anything we could name. Thank you for being you.Secondly, thank you, chairs, for opening up new doors to the delegates and letting the journalists also in. Thank you, journalists, for observing the delegates and

recording you impressions. Thank you for the entertainment and retarded elephants, ducks...

Finally, thank you delegates, for coming to this new experience with an open mind. We hope you have received invaluable memories and remember to return to you the

hÅboist every now then. And don’t worry, these stories will also be online. For EYP is a community that never sleeps. Every moment there are some EYP hobos gathering, only experience something unique together and then to dissolve until merging again. It is now the time for all the håboists to go back to their homes and think back on this wander, the EYP Finland Turku regional session. Who knows, there might be other wanders awaiting just behind the door. Just keep that open mind. Thank you. Kiitos. Merci. May the force of Ninja be with you.

EditorialOn Friday around this time, no one would have guessed that Albert, Marianna, Rasmus, Michael, Emmi, Riikka, Juuso, Sofia and Aada would form such a strong team. First name memorizing and getting-to-know-each-other games were soon over and more challenging problems such as a silent human knot had to be solved. They completed all the games that their chairs could come up with and proved that all that was needed to overcome Finnish shyness was a coin and some motivational words from Ursula and Tatu. As soon as the Committee on Foreign Affairs had agreed upon some basic rules they declared a post-it war. Armed with pens and sticky notes they went into a first round of brainstorming that illustrated the diversity of their topic. The problem of drug production in developing countries, its effects on the European community, as well as finding suitable ways to improve current matters in these turned out to be broader than initially expected. With the ambitious goal of finishing

the resolution one hour before the official deadline in mind, the delegates constructed a perfect square of tables and headed into a heated discussion. The committee members’ inventiveness was stunning. Therefore they were unfortunately forced to stick to a seriously tight schedule and go through several rounds of grouping and specifying their thoughts. The nine AFET delegates cooperated in order to make all opinions comprehensible for each and every single team member: Aada used three different languages and her fellow committee members did their best to translate her ideas into English when she was suddenly out of words – showing that the teambuilding games had achieved their purposes. Whenever the room was filled with an awkward silence or the energy level dropped into the negative area, energizers in the freezing November air woke them up and brought optimistic smiles back to their faces. Pushed by their chairs, the Committee on Foreign Affairs eventually managed to agree

on a set of key points, on which they elaborated further and were finally able to consent on the content of their resolution.Deeply exhausted from all the debating but satisfied with what they had accomplished, they started into the final race of phrasing their resolution. When asked how they are feeling after this truly stressful day, Albert mumbled something about his smoking brain and Riikka just commented with a deep sigh. Their ‘vibe’ was however different; all nine of them wore a wide grin and one could sense the relief and satisfaction that they experienced. Tomorrow, these young EYPers are going to loose their GA virginity and will hopefully have an outstanding and memorable time before the end of the weekend. What is left to say is that no one knows if they will all be able to keep in touch or if their first was also their last session (hopefully not); here is however one thing that can certainly be said: as embarrassing it might have been at some points, that was absolutely worth it in the end.

Things that truly AFfEcT usTeresa describes how the coömöittee overcame shyness.

Passive European CitizenshipElina contemplates over the importance of voting in the society.

To vote is to take a stand on how you believe a country should develop, and to establish your values in society. Everybody has a different opinion, and if society is to function smoothly, all these views need to be put on the agenda of the governments discussing what kind of policy they will follow. How are politicians to execute the people’s will if the people don’t tell them?It can definitely be argued that however citizens may sometimes shout government ignores them and simply pursues its own interests – in the name of money, power or just because they are incompetent to make a change. But this is not a reason to give ourselves up to the worst. If it is bad now, then it won’t get any better when we stop trying. However, if every person is present at every election, every demonstration they believe in, and informed about the government’s actions, then this active participation can lead to at least gradual improvement. Interested and informed citizens will lead to better

education, checking mechanisms on government, and public initiatives that will transform backward perceptions in society from the bottom up.I have often heard that there is no reason to be interested in politics for the simple fact that whatever happens in the world, the Earth will still rotate round the sun, the daily buses will continue to go past your house every morning, and you will still be alive. This is true in times of stability and peace. However, if the population of a country, region, or any kind of community is indifferent to the way the people in power are executing their duties, then soon things will go wrong. As the famous quote goes, “absolute power corrupts absolutely”. How many times do we hear that the cases of embezzlement, under-the-table dealings and corruption only occurred because officials were given too much freedom in doing their job? We must not forget that power is not just a personal privilege, but entails great public responsibility.

What does voting mean to you?The elementary power in voting is that it acts as that fundamental checking mechanism. If a politician does not fulfill the wishes of the people who voted for him, they won’t vote for him again – thus he will strive to do his job properly. Therefore, by being passive, we hinder our own good: if only half the population votes in elections, then only half of society’s interests can be represented. There is no point in complaining about a detriment you bring upon yourself. Voting is what all those wars and revolutions in the name of freedom of choice have boiled down to. By choosing who we want in government, and deciding the ideology (or the lack thereof) that we feel represents us, the collective chooses the manner in which they will live their day-to-day lives. We vote because we hope. Because, whatever we may say at the end of the day, we believe that tomorrow can and will be better, and that we have in that change.

In order to draft a resolution out of the topic we have the committee work. In order to squeeze ideas out of the delegates we have wicked games. That is basically how Saturday rocked on. The committee on Culture and Education I seemed to know what they were doing, as they became creative right from the start. They ended up with dozens of ways how to use a cassette tape. It does show some character if you can see yourself wearing one.

Fair enough, there has to be games somewhere in between the serious thinking in order to create a closely-knit team. During committee work anything can happen. Losing your concentration is not advisable but it happens, especially if someone

disagrees with your opinion. Then, the solution, though you might mistakenly think so, is not to raise your voice. Luckily, CULT was all professional and they didn’t get into any fights. By contrast, they had opinions which they were willing to share and to discuss about. At times, one could almost hear their brains whirling in their heads. Apparently, there was some deep and profound thinking. The topic on minorities in the EU might have seemed tough but these were people who solved a human knot blindfolded.”I love it! It’s so much fun and here I have a change to do team work”, Tavga summed up the committee work. The result of the day was a finished resolution for the General Assembly.

Some serious brain stressing

A seven-pack wolf pack...In ITRE I everyone started off as lonely wolves and the wolf theme was introduced quite early in the teambuilding process when we played “the lonely wolf ”. I suggested that we should howl like wolves every time we succeeded with something. In the beginning, they did not seem to like the idea as much as I did but apparently the howling got stuck and they grew quite fond of it. During the Friday night evening activity they were assigned to come up with a committee chant that included

wolves and they decided to howl. Finally, they had become a united wolf pack; a seven-pack wolf pack. There are many different personalities in our wolf pack. We have tiny Maria whose eyes are as big as saucers and the German guy, Lukas, who seems to be everything but a German stereotype. We had Juliette who sacrificed herself and sat on the floor during the entire session of committee work. There is also the blond beauty Riina whose glasses I accidently broke by sitting on them. I am so sorry for that. We

have Rosa with her characteristic American accident originating from the time she spent in California. Axel speaks Swedish (extra points) and had Swedish relatives that almost used to be my neighbours. We also have Ville, the easy boy, who is exceptionally easily seduced. He just cannot not laugh when approached during “Honey, tell me that you love me”. This wolf pack worked as the true team they are and they will kick your ass in the General Assembly.

Katarina reveals what makes ITRE I howl.

Take it seriously, but not too much !This positive energy is a term written on the committee’s Golden Rules. The committee was also concerned about the name: whoever forgets a name of another person, must propose to him/her. Additionally, at the beginning of the committee work another golden rule was set: “take it seriously, but not too seriously”. The at-ease atmosphere remained the entire day. Even if ‘Nuclear Energy’ is perhaps not the easiest issue to discuss, the committee members were helpful towards one another and shared their knowledge in the group. Lewin could even manage to clarify his ideas about

It took only a few seconds for the delegates of ITRE II to remember each others’ names. In a couple of minutes, they fully trusted each other. For example, Fanny had no fear at all to be lifted and handed over through the spider web by the boys in the committee. The getting-to-know-each-other games revealed interesting facts of the committee members: wishes to volunteer in South America, Communism, riding horses, and juggling with diabolos to name but a few. Not only did the committee solve all the problems during teambuilding, but they also created positive energy amongst themselves.

saving energy with a little graphic he drew on the board. From time to time, the wearying committee work was put aside by traditional EYP games. Laura seemed to be an undefeatable ‘Ninja’. She used a sly female strategy – she always took a step back and let the boys fight each other. Afterwards, she could easily defeat the big and strong Alexander. After “Honey, tell me that you love me” the committee managed to use the last hour to complete the resolution. ITRE II will release the scorpions during the GA.

whole resolution, write an attack speech. If not, you can mark the questionable operative clauses and prepare questions for the open debate. Don’t be afraid to ask critical questions. However, try to be friendly and diplomatic. Use phrases such as ‘I would suggest’, ‘would it sound better if …’ etc. Do more suggestions than criticism. If you’re making a speech, try not to just read straight from the paper you prepared in advance. At the beginning, you can use a famous quote or tell an interesting thing from your committee work related to the resolution to underline your point. Try to engage your audience. Be imaginative, original and the audience will be attentive. Pay attention to the board. You have

Wear appropriate clothes. We want to give some tips especially to boys. Boys usually wear a suit in this occasion. But the problem is often the tie! Don’t worry, the pictures will help you in tying. Have you already put it on? Good, let’s think how to prepare for the factual part of GA. Firstly, make sure that you know all the points of your resolution by heart. Apart from your main role, e.g., as a defender or a sum-up speaker, you can help your committee by participating in the open debate. Do not hesitate to demand a direct response, if you are sure that you should respond to the former speaker. Secondly, read the other resolutions carefully. If you completely disagree with a

to follow every rule they announce. You are allowed to ask question or to reply only after the board gives you the floor. Finally, you are supposed to vote for each resolution. Be critical, but fair. Keep in mind that other delegates have been working on their resolutions quite long, just like you. Respect their opinion. Remember, the GA is a life experience. You can feel it when you’re fully involved in it. Use the chance to express yourself in front of an audience.

them back to their origin countries. We feel the tension. We see the discrimination and pressure from many sides.Committee on Human Rights II discussed the issue. They were worried about the stereotypes – people see Roma people as criminals. Therefore, the Roma suffer from violence against them, mistrusting, unemployment, having no permanent home and so forth. DROI II thought that the Roma people should have the same opportunities for education

Picture the gypsies. How do they look like? Where do they live? In what kind of conditions? How do they behave? Where do they situate in the social hierarchy? What do we really know about the culture and society of Roma people? Worldwide, there is an estimate of 8 to 10 million Roma. According to the resolution of European Parliament on the situation of Roma people in the EU they have exactly same rights as we have. In spite of that we are heading back to the 50ies – France basically wants to deport

and employment as the average Europeans. Also, they should adopt the local country’s life style and laws while not having to be afraid of losing their own traditions. There could be some organised (e.g. music or sport) groups to help them integrate better. Other great solutions will be heard during the GA. Dear Aini, Anne, Emilia, Johanna, Kira, Minttu, Pietu, Teemu and Tuomas – I wish you good luck. You are the best!

Maria and Katarina nominate the craziest officials of the session.

1. How do you spend your average day?a) I spend all my time in front of a computer, trying to break records of fastest type-writing. b) I like to boss people around.c) I clean up after others.

2. Do you sleep nude?a) Yes.b) Sometimes.c) No.

3. Do you consider yourself to be open-minded?a) My mind is as open as the shirt of a true Don Juan.b) Yeeaaahs.c) What?

4. What kind of a wake-up call do you prefer? a) You don’t care, because you’ll be too exhausted to hear anything b) A weird energizer-song c) An Islamic call to prayer

5. How much coffee do you drink a day?a) 3 cafe lattes b) 1-2 espressosc) 5 Turkish coffees

If you score more than 4 of a kind, you should try to apply as a: A – Retarded Elephant (aka Journo)B – Chair C – Organiser

Take this test by Maria and see which official you should become.

Have a glance at the other side...Wake-up callers Alex & HammuA traditional wake-up call would involve singing, heavy door-knocking, or, if you are one of the lucky ones, soft whispering. Apparently, these lovely organisers are far from traditional, and chose to take the ritual of wake-up calling to a whole new level. They found it appropriate to make the Islamic call to prayer echo the school halls and classes.

The French Editor that went on strikeFrench people never joke about their strikes and they will go to any lengths in order to prove their point. French workers might have given up on their infinite protests but Docteur Viault refused to give in. Along with Alejandro the duck, the

Editor brought a true French strike to the Turku session.

Hysterical-laughter MoonikaDon’t be fooled by her deep “greenish” eyes and peaceful figure. When you least expect it, Moonika will burst into a laughter-streak that will brighten the day of the most depressed person at the session and cause her fellow Estonian journo to storm out of the press-room in the search for peace and quiet.

Uche the KillerThis individual falls under the same category as the woman-beater. He didn’t hesitate to kill the Swedish journo with a black eye (who still wishes to remain anonymous) in the Officials’ Vampire Game. Nevertheless, he became very dear

to his delegates, proving that the chairs are more than just “authority figures”.

Hang-around Jan & LarsYou might have noticed the two serious-looking Finns that have entered school grounds without a clear role in the session. As a matter of fact, their role remains a mystery to them, as well. However, one might say that Jan has become a professional Ninja, since he constantly challenges the organisers to a battle inbetween coffee breaks.

Quizz: Which official are you?

Feeling lonely after the session ? Katarina tells you why.

The Concept of PEDPED, or Post EYP Depression, is an established expression within the EYP. It usually hits some days after the session. In some rare cases the first symptoms appear during the last day of the session. In extreme cases the depression can last for months. Everything might seem surreal when you return to your normal life after the dream-like experience that the session offers. You miss your newfound friends, the heated discussions, and especially the EYP spirit. Personally I find the name, PED completely ridiculous. You simply cannot make an abbreviation out of an abbreviation. I would probably have been more committed to the

concept of PED, if the name had been grammatically correct. The depression following an EYP session is not the only symptom of PED. There is the Facebook spamming, too. Your news feed will be full of “Miss you” wall posts, statuses such as “Suffering from PED.....”, “Oooh noo, I am so PEDish”. Of course, many suffer from depression when they miss the good times before the Facebook spamming. Even though I find the name ridiculous and my Facebook is spammed, I must say that EYP would not be the EYP without PED. Missing your friends is only natural, of course you want to be

with them. When you log in on Facebook and find out that you have several new notifications from a new, or an old, EYP friend or ten new friend requests you cannot help but smiling in the middle of your depression. PED is a part of the EYP experience. But please note; the abbreviation is unreasonable.

Teresa & Maria reports on the nine best friends.

“If you’re tired, stop being tired and be awesome instead” was the impressively optimistic attitude of AFCO’s eight members. Chaired by Johan, Stephen, Johanna, Alli, Riikka, Henna, Mona, Andreas and Wilma became more than a team – they became real friends. Some of you might have experienced this before, but the bond that these delegates had truly facilitated their discussions. Contrary to most committees, they hardly had difficulties in understanding each others’ points and if a disagreement appeared, they always found a calm and simple way of merging their ideas into a common one. Not only

did they always find comforting comments to support each others opinions but as time advanced, they sounded almost like an old married couple (e.g. by finishing each others sentences). While trying to push the delegates towards higher goals and inspired by his fellow landsmen ABBA, Johan made the eight participants voice their dreams concerning their topic. The Committee on Constitutional Affairs discussed e-democracy and the interaction of politicians and youths via social networks; proposals such as lowering voting age to sixteen or making online information accessible and

AFCOsome !comprehensible for everyone were thoroughly debated and eventually expanded upon. Although the basic topic was rather serious and often quite challenging, they never failed to enjoy wholeheartedly the time they spent together. Having overcome slight struggles in resolution phrasing, the committee ended the day singing their undoubtedly awesome friendship anthem, starting with the lyrics “nine best friends that anyone could ever have”.We hope that AFCO will keep their optimistic tone during the General Assembly or at least keep the rhythm during the farewell party.

MTV has decided to take TURKU’d to a whole new level. As some of you may have experienced, the fabulous journo team went around throwing ducks at unsuspecting delegates. This is usually followed by a fail imitation of Ashton Kutscher in the form of a howling journo with a camera shouting “You’ve been DUCK’d!” See for yourselves the success of this new programme below!

You’ve been Turku’d!

ECON iconsKaarle reveals who are the people behind the money.

no one had their instruments with them so no actual band was formed... Maybe at the next session. Anyway, this isn’t everything I learned about the committee. Katharine, who is half American and half Finnish told us she wants to become an archaeologist. The first time she said anything, it was clear that she is as easy-going as most of the people in the USA. Sebastian, the dancer and show artist, didn’t unfortunately dance to us. Instead, in spite of not speaking that much during the committee work, every time he said anything, he had a point. Then, there’s Cyril, who probably spoke the most. But it’s OK, he’s French. Cyril came up with good arguments and he would definitely help the committee at the GA, but sadly he has to leave early, just like Philipp. Mico, one of the four Finnish boys, was a great example of Northern people. He was very logical and never seemed to say anything excessive. Erica, who is one of the two girls in the committee, didn’t speak much like Sebastian. But every time when her cell phone rang or when she dropped something, she made a funny sound which brought some joy into the committee room. And her grandmother is Estonian, YAY!One of the few things I think could have been different is that some of the delegates were a bit passive, but that is probably because the whole committee was so intelligent that

In spite of probably looking in the wrong direction while the chairs were announced during the opening ceremony, luckily all the delegates made it to Niek and Henriikka after the common teambuilding. When entering the committee room, the atmosphere was, surprisingly enough, awkward! But the super awesome chairing duo Henriikka and Niek pulled out the heavy machinery and nuked that ice!The whole teambuilding and committee work was interesting for me to watch. One of the first things during the teambuilding was saying your name and telling something personal about yourself. When Philipp told us that he plays the electric guitar and Taneli shared his passion for drums, the first thing I thought was that we could make a whole band out of this committee. But what would a band be without a pianist? Well, help has arrived - Waltter plays the piano! Regrettably

there was often nothing to add. Often, the chairs were sitting apart and just listening to the discussion – no need to interrupt. ECON is really a harmonic committee. If compared to an ideology, they would probably be socialist, because they are equal - everyone can express their opinion.

On the whole, I think that there could be more committees like ECON. At first when I found out that I’ll be journoing for them, I thought „Meeh, economy is boring..“ but I have to admit – it was often hard for me to stay out of the discussion. Thank you, ECON! Keep up the great work!

the effect dancing will have on your belly that has been full of grease from Helburger’s food. I guess it’s going to blow up because we have been awesome NINJAS and SonicBooms while having a hard time trying to bite an apple. Though sometimes I think the world is just too complicated for people like me, who make it even more complicated. So we decided to escape to Lapland where the Sun never goes up and the reindeer are flying.

Somewhere in Finland, in the cold night a little girl was jumping in the snow. She smiled with her lovely mouth and noticed a volcano beside a green trashbin. The bin said „I feel like going to the swimming pool right now, would you join me?“ She joined him and they became lovers. A huge frog suddenly kissed her. The scene took place in a beautiful Finnish sauna. They ran into the snow and built a nice little cottage. But 3 years after, a baby was born, everything fell apart. Oh yes, the

lovers weren’t lovers anymore. Without a warning a bear came to their house. The bear took the baby and ran away. The baby was never found. But then suddenly a hunter shot the bear with an arrow straight to it’s right eye. At the same moment the magic squirrel came running through the woods, throwing carrots at the evil hunter, who decided to barbeque the squirrel and dance around the fire with Moomins and lilla Jamal. astonished me. This not only proves that they became a team and acted as one but also that they felt comfortable enough to share their views and values concerning the topic. By the end of the day, they felt proud of their work and discovered that the expectations they had on the first day were not only met but even exceeded. Despite the exhaustion, which made one delegate realise how beautiful the ceiling of her own school was, the members of FEMM remained faithful to their original statement about the day – fantastic, equal, magnetic, mind-blowing.

Having experienced the Finnish sauna tradition and successfully graduated from the “Creativity Academy” of our editors, Benoit and Henna, I felt more than ready to finally meet the delegates. I must admit that I wasn’t surprised that FEMM was an all-girl-committee; however, the debates would have had more sparks, if there had been at least one male delegate amongst us. The girls are in complete agreement on this point. Committee work started out with a quick brainstorming on 50 things to do with their very own journo, which made me reconsider my priorities. Apparently, I should be eating frogs in France, drinking

German beer, going to see the Real Santa Claus in Korvatunturi and watching Lion King.
